I've played cassette games on the msx with smooth scrolling, so certainly wasn't a hardware limitation thing. Seemed to just be a cartridge thing. To be honest though, it never really bothered me. The superiority of the graphics over the rest of the 8-bit computer conversion and the flicker-free, frantic gameplay meant you barely noticed it when playing. A pity the cartridge didn't utilise an scc chip.
@captainsime MSX 1 and MSX 2 didn't have HW horizontal scroll... this is why scroll is NOT smooth. And remeber the age of this game. Now you can find modern games with smooth scroll even in a MSX 1 (Malaika, for example) , but then it was nearly impossible.
The similarities Konami's Space Manbow has with this game are striking. This level even looks like SMB's first level; and then the enemies that move in a circular shape...

way better than the spectrum version but far from the pc engine of course, good conversion anyway...

What about the "normal" music without the FMPAC ?
How was it ?
macdeath69 2 years ago
@macdeath69 The normal music is horrible, mainly because the Sound effects (which are bad enough by themselves) cover up the bass instrument.

@macdeath69 if you look up "R-Type for MSX1 " in the youtube search bar it should be the 1st vid

horrible scrolling. wat were they thinking?
melvoin 3 years ago
The choppy scrolling is due to the limitations of the MSX1 system.

I wish they'd also made an MSX 2 version back then.

A good port, even though they forgot the stars.
