cantonese is so much more beautiful than mandarin, literature and music-wise. most professors would agree on this. it is not just a dialect at stake but the whole culture and history that flows with this. mandarin for business purposesonly . otherwise, cantonese is the lingua franca and will always be for hong kong and guangdong

The intentions and the excuses the CCP gave to replace cantonese to mandarin means they dont give a shit about cantonese and wants to replace it. Basically what they saying is it will make it better for mandarin people to occupy guangzhou and eventually the rest of guangdong. We are all Chinese and thats the dumbest idea I have heard. The Chinese government FORCES everybody in China to speak Mandarin without having any consent of the people. This is disrespectful to China and its ancient culture. The richness of the Chinese culture lies in its diversity. This is not the way! Cantonese must be the main language in Guangdong!

The Cantonese are not saying they refuse to learn Mandarin. They welcome the idea, but why invade the province to remove the language since it has such strong historical culture and including the whole world. Having more than one language is beneficial. That is like someone coming to your house and telling you that you cant do certain things in your house. If they want to promote that idea then why not make English the official language since it is official all over the world.

that is pure ignorance and arrogant. you shouldn't be insulting Cantonese like that. you wouldn't like it if someone was insulting your Taiwanese language. Also understand the difference between language and dialect. Dialects are varieties of a particular Language, but are still mutually understandable. Cantonese is not a dialect because it has no mutual intelligibility to Mandarin. Look it up in google and this definition is official in the social sciences especially Linguistic Anthropology.

Just because the Chinese government states something does't mean that it is true. Why do you think there is no facebook and youtube in China? You are so ignorant.Cantonese is more than a language. It is a culture that is different from the mandarin and it has a substantial amount of people speaking it in China and in the world.

thank you very much. I can tell you must have majored in social science areas in college or interacting with open-minded people along with reading good sources. No one is saying the Cantonese shouldn't learn Mandarin, but it is not fair to come to Guang Dong and tell them they can't speak their own language that has been around for so long and with so much historical culture including that it is very widespread internationally. knowing more than one language is a wonderful thing.

Manderin is the only official dialect that is proper and fair in China. This would make it possible for every person to comunicate in one common dialect beside their own respective tongues. Being able to speak both Cantonese and Manderin is benificial to a Cantonese speaking person. It would be a pity for two Chinese persons who read and write common language and yet unable to speak to each. Taiwnese or Cantonese who does not speak manderin should start to learn by now. Its good for you.

These cantonese people should start to look at the world in a broader scope. Remember, there are many other dialects in China and none of these other groups feel that they will lose their traditional mother tongue or traditions because they know that it is not,and will be threatened by any other language. After all, every dialects and minority language in China remain intact after several thousand of years due to our unique tolorence of other groups within our great kindom that is China.

there is only one offical language in China which makes Cantonese a DIALECT for sure.

There is a difference between dialect and language. Dialect is when there are different varieties of a specific language but are mutually intelligible to each other. Cantonese is a language because there is no such mutual intelligibility with Mandarin. This definition of Dialect and Language is official in linguistic Anthropology and other areas in Social Science.
