@urt200123 Well, only if I wanted a lot more work. Standard power, mainly torque of the 5.0 is adequate for my needs, and can be bumped 100 hp pretty easily when the time comes. The 4.6 is smaller displacement, however due to the OHC design it is a larger engine in terms of its dimensions, and not easy to fit under the Miata hood. It has been done, but is much more difficult than the time-proven 5.0 swap of the last 15 years or so.
This is the heaviest of the common conversions, and it ended up about 54/46 after about a 250# weight gain. Fine for my purposes and budget. Those who autocross and do track days don't seem to have problems, and any change in weight distribution appears to be more than offset by the additional torque and hp. The Ford conversions can be lightened with aluminum heads and removing a/c and p/s. The LSX all-aluminum swaps can be done for little to no weight gain.
Yeah, 2 years down the road from when I started I give the LS swaps a lot more consideration. They weren't nearly as sorted out as they are now. At the time the 5.0 fit my needs and my budget--and it still does. But for my next swap, if I do one, I'll seriously consider one of the LS versions.
Fantastic video. so jealous! I'm a little too tall for the older generation Miata's, so I'm hoping that the new (2006 & up) will come down in price soon enough so I can build one! Great work!
A Ford conversion usually runs $10-15k plus the car and your own labor, if you use a kit, depending on how fancy you get with the engine--crate vs used, new transmission vs used, wheels, exhaust, suspension, accessories etc. It can be done for less if you want to do your own fabrication of major pieces. Check out the Engine Conversion forum on miata.net for details.
About how much did this all cost? Im in love with the 5.0 engine had one in a ford ranger and this looks like it would be fun. I just wanna know a rough estimate. Thanks
It's a bone stock '95 Mustang GT 5.0, so it's factory ratings were 215 hp/ 275 torque. With the shorty headers and slightly more free-flowing exhaust it might be 225 hp on a good day. Weight without driver is around 2600. It's quick enough for me...
@MrDenniski Yeah, I'm not sure why you would go to this sort of expense when you can FI the standard engine to produce MORE power and torque...whilst retaining the weight distribution of the roadster :s Still, I WOULD like that V8 soundtrack but maybe from a PROPER V8 the likes of which Ferrari produce!
@bingoberra18 Yes, that's why I went with a '95 as it was the last year for the 5.0 in the Mustang. The 5.0 is a lot easier fit, and the conversion kit is designed for it. There were also emissions considerations.
I won't comment on the math there, but when corner weighing, it came out about 54-46 if I recall. That was with a/c, power steering, factory iron heads.
Car is 99% done now, and is a real sleeper until you look close. It is a pleasure to drive; is smoother, quieter, and easier shifting (when cold) than my stock '92. Still fine tuning a few minor items, but has already been on a 200 mile drive and gets its share of attention at the local car shows.
It's a new Ford Racing T5z. All the best features of the World Class T5, plus 2.95 first instead of 3.35, and a .62 fifth. Works well with the 3.27 diff from a tbird.
Make a nice video once you get it all back together....so far it seems real nice man. I plan to build one in the next year or so. I'm currently looking for a mint doner car for a reasonable price.
should have went with a 4.6 dohc alot more power smaller engine

@topdownfun22 He should just switch the middle AC switch to the right so that the air passes through the miata not to circulate adds 100 hp =D

@MrDenniski Too bad that engine design is 25+ years old, the current 5.0 makes 444 HP soon to be in the 470 range.

whoops. i meant .
65-50=15 and 15=im retarded.
greenrolaids 6 months ago
@greenrolaids I'm still not sure what you meant by that. Did you mean 65-35? You would need to have a 1000+lb engine to mess up a Miata like that. :)
MyOpinionMatterss 6 months ago
Yes, factory gauges work fine, interior is together and everything looks completely stock.
topdownfun22 7 months ago
did you get your factory guages working? at this point Im thinking I will probably build a custom dash and strip HVAC if I do mine.

Around 17 in town, around 24-25 on hwy. Haven't tuned it yet (I think it's running rich), and it's hard to stay out of the go-pedal.
