With sharing the world's resources there will be world justice. With world justice there will be world peace. With world peace there will be a world left. Feed the little ones. The world's future is in humanity's hands. The problem is in our own world's backyard.
Not meaning to be cynical, but as soon as a few more billion have enough money to buy cars and use more energy the poverty issue will be the last one we think about.
The planet isn't big enough to handle all of it's population living well. We will also run out of food and energy quickly and it will be harder to adapt as much of the money will have been spent on the issue of poverty.
First we need to be able to handle everyone on the planet living well.
The richest 1% of the worlds population owns more than the bottom 95% and the bottom 50% own just 1%. These imbalances cannot be overcome within the framework of the system that created them—CAPITALISM. Appealing to the despots responsible for this mess is futile and inane.
Poverty is sad. look in our own backyards and you will see we have not done that great a job in finding a solution.
People feel dissatisfied, for communities to work we have different roles that we rate & reward with money? I dont think our rating system works very well?
We buy things we dont need & with food under lock and key (available only at a price) we can make ourselves feel better (by going outside of the natural order of the world) but at what cost to our overall survival?
A revolution to make the world a better place, & we are selling capitalism as a model? I dont understand.
The focus on how much a person spends a day, the push for a standardised infrastructure (education, health and welfare) so we can train the young people of these societies to be dutiful consumers. Is the aim to create a homogeneous world where really we don't have any differences anymore?
Talk, talk, talk. Just start in your neighborhoods! help around home and local communities and soon you will see it flow over the edges into these places!
I personally am going to change the world, are you?
Its amazing how many fools have commented on this and dont have a clue. They should be the ones who make sure they dont breed lol ! Inform yourself further b4 commenting on such serious issues. Have a read of a book called "The Bottom Billion" by Paul Collier. It will provide you great insight in to how we could begin to address the complexity of the myriad of issues plaguing the bottom billion.
The reason why the "HOW" has not been found is because the answer is not simple, nor is it easy to achieve. No one who understands this would ever say so.
The "HOW" will be achieved by perseverance and a drive to achieve sustainable change.
I'm not a big fan of the "aid industry". Yes, the West can help. But the modern world does "stuff" well, food, medical supplies etc. What is really needed in many developing parts of the world, is more accountability by the govts themselves. Local warlords and similar inflict great suffering on their own or neighbouring peoples - no amount of aid/financial support can change some peoples hearts! Best wishes for your efforts.
Optimusprimo69 I completely agree with you; poverty could have been solved many times over but efforts have been misguided. Trade, enforceable property rights and capital investment, not aid and video presentations, is what is needed.
It will never work! Big Ideas for a big problems never works! A big problem like Poverty in Africa and for that matter anywhere starts with just 1 person. I've seen Band aid, Live aid Bono aid and the list goes on. Big Ideas like this mean big business & it will be lucky if 10% gets to the poor and needy. But along the way the organizers will make heaps & heaps and argue heaps. If you want to give find a Missionary who lives in the poverty and give to him or her...there are plenty around.
Agreed - there's no one big idea that will end extreme poverty.
Extreme poverty is complex and nuanced, and so our actions in response to it need to be complex and nuanced.
Our presentation introduces some of these ideas, and sets out a framework for how we can support the world's poor to solve the problems themselves, one at a time.
In the book Dead Aid, former World Bank economist Moyo describes the inherent problems of continually providing aid to Africa, and the cycle of dependency condemning third world countries to long-term poverty instead of empowering them to engage in constructive nation building. We are not the first generation that could have eradicated extreme poverty so I hope we are the ones that can make significant inroads to eradicate the agricultural subsidies that have kept aid unproductive up till now.
Great observation - agricultural subsidies and other barriers certainly limit the effectiveness of aid, and our ability to end extreme poverty depends not just on how much aid we give, but how we engage with Africa and those in extreme poverty in all regards.
For us as everyday citizens, it means that ending poverty is about doing more than making donations, important though that is. The products we buy, the media we consume, the time we give and the choices we make in our democracy all matter.
Donate all the money you like, it wont get rid of poverty. (you may notice poverty exists in "first world" countries too) Charities and Fund raising is a band-aid solution and although it doesn't solve the problem, it does make some people and organisations very rich. If you want to end poverty, invest and build infrastructure and educate the population... Unfortunately for them, there is more money to be made by deliberately keeping "developing countries" poor.
Inequality will always exist - there will always be people who are richer and poorer.
But, in a world with so much prosperity, there is no reason - ethical, social, political or economic - that 1.4 billion people continue to live in extreme poverty, or on less than the purchasing power of US$1.25 a day.
It's this sort of poverty that we talk about in the presentation, and it's this sort of poverty that we have the opportunity to end within a lifetime.
Bob Geldof's Bandaid back in the 80's was a huge success. He saved all those children who got to grow up and breed in an environment that could not sustain them. He altered the natural boom and bust cycle of a population and the rewards of this action are being felt now. The problem is much worse. Overpopulation is the biggest threat this world is facing. You want to save the poor and hungry? Fine but sterilise them at the same time.
Population management is a challenge, but it is a global one.
From an ethical point of view, the steps taken to stablise global population should be applied equally to all people in all countries.
This would mean that we're saying we should sterilise all people, which I think is something that would face significant resistance.
The best way of reducing fertility rates and population growth is to ensure that girls get to go to school, and that communities are lifted out of poverty.
Forgiveness of loans, great idea! I wonder if the World Bank and IMF would be so kind as to forgive those loans and return the collateral (resources). Those same loans that go towards the purchasing of weapons so they can go about shooting each other. The same dudes that sell the weapons want to end poverty? Why stop while corporations make such huge profits from the sales. Get them to kill themselves while you take away the ability to feed themselves (resources/land) END WEAPONS!
This challenge - of money saved from loan repayments being spent on arms - is something that has been incorporated into the way debt forgiveness works.
To qualify for debt relief through the IMF and World Bank's multilateral debt relief initiative (MDRI), countries need to meet a range of criteria related to good governance.
Debt relief done right can make real differences to the world's poor - in Tanzania, it's enabled huge re-investment in health and education.
yes we are the chosen ones, especially those of us who are educated and wealthy . The world needs us now. It is our responsibility to sacrifice our luxurious lifestyles for the good of all mankind. We are fortunate not for our own selfish purpose, but to help others. Enough fashion and fame non sense, it is time to be real. Step up to the real challenge. Acknowledge what your conscience is saying. Start today. Join the revolution. CHANGE THE WORLD
Its not the fact we haven't reached our target goal, its that government haven't given all the money into developing poverty stricken countries. Charities such as the 40 hours famine and other various activites have been around for more than 20 years. Are the governments and politicians seriously trying to tell us there hasn't been enough money raised? Are you seriously trying to tell us that for over 20 years, none of the money raised in that time frame, has all gone to waste?
Global poverty will never end until the return of Christ for one simple reason: People do not know how to share. World Governments are corrupt and remain a massive stumblingblock. Charity organisations are also questionable in all of this. Giving a third world community running water achieves nothing when their entire country is run by a dictatorship and people are hacked to death by machetes or shot for sport every day. Take out the despots or everything you do is in vain.
Your church is the corrupt organisation you are speaking about and why would Jesus do anything? Does "Gods will" not happen without Jesus having to come down and dish out a miracle or two? This is a problem for man to address. If he wont help right now, leave your lazy god out of it.
This is intolerance, quite the opposite of sensibility. Do not insult others' beliefs to make yourself feel important; it is certainly not making the world a better place.
Jesusonthethrone - sorry buddy but I refuse to believe that Jesus is the only catalyst for being nice to each other. I'm not knocking religion just expressing my view that people can be nice to each other without divine intervention. I see good well meaning people every day. What I don't see is enough of it.
but i thought the last generation was going to eradicate poverty? TBH i blame the poor for the situation they are in... i mean we tried to help them but they can on breeding.. if they took some responisbility maybe it would be easier? or should we just through money at them and never address the issue?
it's could to be optomistic , but unless you actually go there yourself and drag them out of poverty stricen conditions teach them what is right and get out of extreme poverty then nothing will change .
and they do need to help themselves .
they get educated people into power and it still goes to shit so yeh when africa countries are ready to advance they will be so just let them be till they develop
Viper - i agree with the opinion that the african are held back by their leadership. look at zimbabwe.... a relatively prosperous nation until mugabe took over. I might be convinced that there were some underlying black vs colonial issues (i don't know enough about the counry) but despots like mugabe seem somewhat prevalent in africa. all the aid in the world won't stop africa's dictatorships.
In the interviews that we've conducted - with people in extreme poverty, those working to support them, and with policy-makers - there's a strong sense of people wanting to 'help themselves.'
All around the world, people are studying, working and trading their way to a better life in incredibly challenging situations. But, there are three big barriers holding them back, and which we explore in the presentation - governance, money and trade rules.
I think it is views like that which exemplify the problem of poverty within our soicety - attend a presentation, read more, learn more about the issues before throwing grand statemetns out there
I absolutely agree 100%! If we were to help the African people imagine what they will bring to the world, using some of their unique comparative advantages, who knows that could be the next China or india if we can give them that chance.
Ask the church apparently they can wipe out world poverty ...... well they arnt doing it, its nice when 'Gods chosen' do Gods work, kill the infidels.
What do you hate-filled atheists have against Christians anyway? Do you not like it that we try to help people?.. is that it? Or do you just hate Christians in general because you don't want to be held accountable to a creator?
Whatever the reason is... please, lighten up and stop the illogical hatred against those who are trying to help others.
It's true that the rich in India are getting richer, but it shouldn't be forgotten that there are still 15 million street children in the country, or that malnutrition rates in India are worse than any African country. You have my full support! I hope this really brings about some change!
It's true that the rich in India are getting richer, but it shouldn't be forgotten that there are still 15 million street children in the country, and that malnutrition is worse in India than any African country.
This looks like a great initiative. I'm right behind it!
Most of the issues you have raised are discussed and debated in the presentation. We debate issues like aid: does it help to alleviate poverty, corruption: how do we end it, population and development.
just went to the web page looks like an awesome line up behind this campaign - am interested to see what they ahve to say - been a few interesting comments so far - a lot of issues I've grappled with - I'm going to go and see what they have to say - must have some merit with Hugh Evans, Nelson Mandela Foundation, AusAid etc involved... think it's worth challenging some of my pre-conceptions and asking these questions direct - thanks for creating forum to do it with the preso
Why don't we do something??? This is obviously the biggest issue. People say we've gotten out of stuff like this in the past, but what if we don't this time. We need to act!!!
We need to find a way to get the 3rd world to drastically lower it's birth rate. If for example Africa had less people, they would have an easier time supporting that lower population, feeding themselves etc, and eventually may produce enough food to help the other impoverished areas of the globe to some extent.
Not to mention less spread of disease, and easier management and prevention of diseases...
I feel that sending aid, without addressing the population issue, is just a band aid solution
This is a great observation - and one we talk about in the presentation.
The most effective way to lower a country's birth rate is to ensure that all girls go to school. As a good example, in Brazil, women with a secondary education have an average of 2.5 children, compared to 6.5 children for illiterate women.
Let us help the people where they are. No more migration to Australia. No more running down Australian water reserves for idiotic gestures that will only impoverish everyone. Australia is largely desert. Please remember this.
It's true that in some areas where there's extreme poverty, there's poor governance and sometimes, warlords.
One good way to improve governance - which means making sure that things like schools, roads and health systems work - is to support local communities through aid to achieve their goals - which is how many charities are already working.
Then, the community can improve governance itself - creating better leaders, asking tougher questions of government, and resisting violence and conflict
The whole concept is based on a flawed premise. Throwing money at the issue of poverty doesn't solve anything. Africa is plagued by corrupt governments and warlord's who are the main beneficiaries of aid money. All the aid money in the world will do nothing to end continuing race violence throughout the region. Increasing aid money really exacerbates the problem and a campaign solely based around aid money is attempting to tackle the issues from the wrong angle.
I agree. The dictators need to be removed before we can proceed but the only country with the balls to remove other country's amoral leaders, America, gets bagged whenever they go in. People of the world, dear fuckwits, make up your minds. You can't have it both ways.
The presentation looks at how things including aid, trade, good governance and investment in education and health care can reduce poverty.
Africa has some poor leadership and its fair share of corruption. But, it's also home to some great examples of progress, enabled in part by aid, and a lot by good governance.
Botswana's economy has grown faster than just about anywhere else in the world. Ghana hosts a flourishing multi-party democracy. And Uganda, has kept HIV at bay.
In the presentation we outline the role that each of us as citizens and consumers can play in support of communities and countries improving governance.
As a start, it's about deciding how we can best support people striving to lift themselves out of extreme poverty. Do we see corruption as a reason not to bother trying, or do we see it as a challenge to be overcome?
Keep watching the YouTube Channel as we add more films in the coming weeks and/or come along to a presentation to find out more.
We here in the West have everything these people need to survive and live. Greed, Selfishness & Corruption are the foundation of poverty! Time to expand our "little world"!
THE PLANET IS ALREADY SUFFERING UNDER THE WEIGHT OF HUMANITY-
Competition for resources results in war. If people are dying because they have the misfortune to be living in an area which cannot support such large numbers it is only nature 'balanceing the books'
Imposing poverty in the Global Village is also named as confiscating of ones right to live peacefully & deny him of the basic needs of life. We must all start to provide interest free loans/financial aids to enable all the human beings earn their living. Presenting poverty charts, graphs & the issues relating to them is only one side of the picture. But the horrible side of the picture is irrepressible reaction in the shape of suicide bombing & destructions. We may call it terrorism or extremism
With sharing the world's resources there will be world justice. With world justice there will be world peace. With world peace there will be a world left. Feed the little ones. The world's future is in humanity's hands. The problem is in our own world's backyard.

Lol.
Africa needs private property and free market capitalism, not a war-treasury top-up
Individualism101 2 years ago
I absolutely agree 100%! If we were to help the African people imagine what they will bring to the world, using some of their unique comparative advantages, who knows that could be the next China or india if we can give them that chance.

This looks like a great initiative. I'm right behind it!

Thank you for all of your comments and ideas.

AussieOz007 2 years ago
This is a great observation - and one we talk about in the presentation.
The most effective way to lower a country's birth rate is to ensure that all girls go to school. As a good example, in Brazil, women with a secondary education have an average of 2.5 children, compared to 6.5 children for illiterate women.

Let us help the people where they are. No more migration to Australia. No more running down Australian water reserves for idiotic gestures that will only impoverish everyone. Australia is largely desert. Please remember this.

Giving aid is all good but how does that stampout warlords in these regions who are the main reasons for extreme poverty?
19Podesta91 2 years ago 2

GlobalPovertyProject 2 years ago
I believe that Botswana's economic growth is a reflection of its independence from South Africa rather than an example of positive assistance.
So if aid is only part of an overall scheme, how exactly is the project going to influence governance?
spuzzdawg 2 years ago
