  • I love this song , but I used to think John Lennon sang it for some reason. Only on the `oh oh oh' part.

  • Most people don't know it's actually pronounced "Jer Maker" as in, "Your Maker".

  • @dartness340 Actually "Did you make 'er?". It's written in Wikipedia.

  • I heard this song so long ago, but I still remembered that opening riff, with that sweet little little melody playing. Then I heard it cruising with my friend in San Diego a few months ago, and I had the hardest time tracking it down. All I knew that it was from Led Zeppelin, but check out where I am now! Nothing but awesomeness man.

  • crawling for eden

  • Its joke...

"My wife's gone to the West Indies." "Jamaica?" (which has a similar pronunciation as "D'you make her?") "No, she went of her own accord"

  • The drum opening reminded me of "Where is my mind?" (or maybe vice versa) I would really like to hear (the) Pixies do a cover of a Zep song!

  • "My wife's gone to the West Indies."

    "Jamaica?" (D'yer Mak'er)

"No, she went of her own accord"

  • @1utubechannel Sean Kingston fucked this song for me...now I can't listen to this without thinkin about his crappy version...

  • what beatifull song..

  • zeppelin branched into all genres in a way. and about lil' wayne, the reason people think he's so talented is because he writes his music while listening to zeppelin

  • Some people say that reggae is bad, but even a Led Zeppelin played music with reggae influences

  • @Karioca171 I don't know how anyone could think reggae is bad as a genre, you can't deny the amount of emotion and soul in good reggae like toots, marley, tosh; this song too.

  • Listen to sean kingston Me LOVe and then this. haha sillly

  • I didn't know about the origins of the title. But as an Englishman, I did always pronounce it 'dee yerr maker'. For my money this is one of the best songs ever written.

  • @flugrugr008 why mention him?

  • Most people don't know it: D'yer ma'ker = Jamaica.

  • @Cleciano22 Right on! It's pronounced Jermaker. Jermaker = British accent saying Jamaica.

  • @Cleciano22 D'yer Ma'ker was actually Led Zeppelin imitating reggae and this song was supposed to be a joke/fun song. None the less this song is amazing.

  • @Cleciano22 yeah the way british people pronounce it is "jermaker" and it's a play on words from an old joke with the line "did you make her"..as in, "did you fuck her".

  • @Cleciano22 I thought D'yer Ma'ker meant Did You Make Her????

  • @Cleciano22 its door maker in albanian

  • @Cleciano22 yea we know its supposed to sound like an english man saying Jamaica

  • @Cleciano22 Congrats on discovering Wikipedia

  • yessah, good jam

  • Can someone explain to me what the title means?

  • @lyonslaforet It's a joke. Google it. The song's title is actually pronounced "Jamaica," not "D'yer Mak'er," by the way.

  • @lyonslaforet From a bad old UK joke that goes "My wife's gone to the West Indies,Jamaica? No it was her own decision" (Did you make her) in a British accent,

    Hence the Reggae feel!

  • @somame69 ah, i get it now. Ja (Did'ya) maic (make) a (her). now it makes sense.

  • 2:34 best "I love you" of the music

  • And for all you always-gettin'-the-wrong-end-o-th'-word yanks out there, 'd'yer mak'er' also means (in the mouth of a cockney) 'd'yer fuck'er' (did you fuck her?)

  • @SloKart I'M SHAKING MY HEAD FROM DISAPPOINT AFTER HEARING THIS SONG! LED ZEPPELIN F***ING SUCKS AND THIS IS AWFUL!!!!

    /watch?v=3BDTtWqygR4

  • I just got a new (old) turn table and can play ALL my Led Zep vinyl again! YAY!

  • you dont have to go

  • Plant&Page in a '70s interview explained the title of this song's a pun&should be pronounced as "Jamaica". "D'yer'maker" spells out how an Englishman might pronounce the phrase "Did you make her".Of course, the title almost always got mispronounced by DJs as "Die-ur-make-ur" (wrong!)

P&P said the title came from this joke:

Man A: "My wife's gone away."

    Man B: "Jamaica?"

Man A: "No, she left of her own accord."

-Of course, "Jamaica" also refers to song's quasi-reggae rhythms. There you have it!

  • @Bobjb999 thank you for that awesome piece of knowledge! i always thought it was dier maker myself, but i like "jamaica" a lot better! lol it actually makes sense

  • @Bobjb999 thats not a very funny joke

  • Comment removed

  • @MrZzachariah13 Apparently you don't have a sense of humor then.

  • @MrZzachariah13 you're a joke

  • @Bobjb999 You sir have enlightened me

  • @Bobjb999 quasi-reggae rhythms? I hear a steady 1/2 beat time, can't find any skanking here mate? But I haven't smoked any yet.....

  • @Bobjb999

thank god somebody else knows this

  • This mimics the song and dub reggae, which emerged in Jamaica in the early 70's. Born in Stargroves trial in 1972 when drummer John Bonham played a similar rate to doo wop of the 50's, and then switched to a slower tempo, when there is the influence of reggae. The distinctive sound of the drums were achieved by using three microphones at a considerable distance Bonham battery.

  • led zepplin is classic rock. end of story some1 said there pop and some1 said there heavy metal...both failures. although they are kinda like 70s metal

  • @rainingbloodonu

Pop music isn't a genre. Pop= popular music.

Unless you listen to traditional music, everything you listen to is pop.

Led Zeppelin was a pop band that drew influences from blues, rock n roll, country, folk, traditional music (mainly Celtic and Indian), et cetera. The result was the creation of hard rock. Many metal bands were influenced by hard rock, or Led Zeppelin to be more specific. It is understandable that Zeppelin would be considered metal by some.

  • @username91ification That's not necessarily true. Although the term pop music originally meant any popular music, it has come to refer to more mainstream, recent styles, usually ones with little by way of originality or creativity. The Beatles were originally a pop band, but transitioned into a more psychedelic and strange, but awesome, sound. Led Zeppelin was never really 'pop' in it's common sense, though they were, and still are, very popular. They were considered hard rock or metal by most.
