Agreed. But as a longtime Joni lover, this was probably her last great album. The stuff from the 80s became brittle and self-indulgent and the melodies were just gone. And she's so endlessly bitter and nasty now, I can't handle it. Joni, we didn't change. You did. And for the worse.
Joni & Jaco... real chemistry on this tune... That is some bass part... Jaco didn't seem as driving or competitive with Joni as he was for WR. So he plays differently and sounds wonderful.
I think if more pople got out on the road and away from the TV all would be better off. Yes the American dream has changed but dont by what the mass media is selling. Violence comes too easy today eveyone is stressed out. But some are just evil and intentionally create chaos. On an individal level there is compassion but only for those who choose the light. Been a poet for 30 years got 3 books out. May we all see the poetry in life and life in poetry.
Joni is an indigo, meaning that her soul is a being in the seventh dimension; whereas the rest of us (who do have souls) have souls dwelling in the sixth dimension. This information is beyond the logic circuits of the surface mind, so just try to feel the truth of this - in the same way that you feel the truth of Joni's observations. Other indigos are Tesla, Einstein, Yeats, Ben Franklin, Rudyar, DD Palmer, Black Elk, Beethoven, Hiromi Uehara, Jeane Dixon, Groucho.
Andrea, if that's all you focus on that's all you will see. True this country has become hard, but greed fostered much of this, not to mention the media with their attention grabbing shock fueled headlines. There is still much more compassion left in people, but the few who violate this principal seem to define us all....NOT SO!!
I am glad to read your mail. I'm sure you're right. About GREED as well. I feel that as a result of putting MONEY=Success so high on the roster, the U.S. has violated some huge truths... dignity and humility... and has contaminated a huge portion of mankind.
Maybe the Mayan predictions for tumultuous change of conscience (starting this year) will give us all strength to revert the damage done.
Thank you, Joni, for this album -- from one restless soul to another. All HEJIRA fans are alike: Seeking refuge in the roads. Sleeping on strange pillows of our wanderlust. Finding comfort in melancholy when there's no need to explain.
I don't know where I first heard of Joni Mitchell but I guess I was maybe 16 or 17 - the Miles of Aisles, Hejira and Hissing of Summer Lawns are my favorite albums from her works. Odd, because she was a favorite a generation before I was exposed to her music. Funny, with this era's "Talent" their PR people try to compare some of the the female artists loosely to Joni, but so far I don't see any male or female artists that can be compared. Immeasurable talent in music and lyrical creativity.
Just listened to this on an SHM CD- took me to Joni's planet. Listening to it was like being in her recording studio. I'm now going to listen to the entire Hejira CD. I have to say though, this song is now one of my top all time favorites- 'till death do us part. Thanks for posting such a timeless and haunting song.
The song that 'closes' a sublime album.... A hymn to the price we pray for freedom. I feel sad for the new USA, so far from freedom, compassion and poetry. So HARD and violent. God bless Joni. May the poets bare through...
@andreaprodan This is one of the most profound and wise comments I have ever seen posted on YouTube. How far indeed is our country from the ideals of justice and compassion. I have been listening to this 'sublime' album for 30 years. I find it very calming. God bless the poets everywhere, and all those who champion the innate dignity of mankind, who find some beauty in each soul.
I've had Joni fever for 3 years now. A day wont pass without me listening to one of her wonderful songs. Such powerful aura!Peace and love to other fans out there!
to valbonnable...your son knows what very few understand...Joni is a f#$#ing genius..and this is the best work Jaco ever did...Truly a masterpiece!!!!!!!
===> Oh yes... The refuge of the Roads... Unfortunately, cannot find a good enough live performance of "Refuge" . . . This is one of my favorite & "most personal Joni" songs... (there are a number of them)... and , I was amazed by a few of the wonderful vintage live performances on youtube... /// ;)
This song is about the buddhist master Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Joni sure is one deep woman. Her music has inspired me in my great moments and pushed me through the failures. She is so brilliant!
Joni Mitchell was having a lot of internal conflict at this time. She basically wanted to split the scene, as the saying goes. Therefore the title Hejira, which means a journey for the purpose of escape. So her 1976 album is the offspring or culmination of these feelings she had.

Pastorius' line is lyrical. Makes you half-wonder - Is that a bass or is it a horn? So touching!

bought it when it was out on vinyl, (still got it) time has proven there are very few greats, but for JM she is as cool as it gets.
Thanks for uploading Hejira, I ditched the turntable years ago, another marantz moment.
