Actually, contrary to the stuff that's going around, this scene isn't pointless filler. The Alligator becomes one of Charlie's allies. He comes back near the end of the movie and saves Anne Marie from being held captive by Carface, and Charlie from being killed by him. Gator kills Carface, and pretty much saves both their lives.

Another thing that ironic is when he play oggie boggie a couple to several years after this they actual censored his musical number. Lock bock and sherel mention oggie stue in the kidnapping santa claus song its never mentioned again. There was a line in the song were he talked about eat him but t hey cut it out. Unlike the other songs in the movie, it bears no relevance to the plot (other than Charlie doesn't get eaten), and it violates the rule of the rest of the movie that only Anne-Marie has inter-species communication abilities!
