As a fan of both, Elton was THE MAN from 1969-75. He was blindsided by fame, as many musicians have been to their ruin. Cat was the acoustic MAN from 1973-79; his label said he could sell out the Gardens for a week without a new release! I'd say they were both the best in differing genres- Elton moving towards hard & glam rock on piano, Cat remaining acoustic guitar.
This is from the Cat Stevens box set. It wasn't released at the time it was recorded in the early 70s, because the two of them were on different labels (Island and DJM in the UK and A&M and MCA in the U.S.) and a deal couldn't be worked out.

I will agree that when he was still and called Cat, he was a tremendous writer and singer.
Elton is still in the biz, active and still writing.
Cat(or whatever his name is) hasn't done anything worth listening to since he "retired" and stopped using soap.
Although Elton has gone through many changes music-wise, he's still kickin, performing and writing. He's got a new musical opening the fall, "Billy Elliot".

As a fan of both, Elton was THE MAN from 1969-75. He was blindsided by fame, as many musicians have been to their ruin. Cat was the acoustic MAN from 1973-79; his label said he could sell out the Gardens for a week without a new release! I'd say they were both the best in differing genres- Elton moving towards hard & glam rock on piano, Cat remaining acoustic guitar.

Considering that at one point Cat Stevens was bigger than Elton John. Its a shame Cat Stevens quit music in 1979.
Would be interesting to see what he came up in that time period. Before his return to pop music in 2006 almost a 30 year period.

This is from the Cat Stevens box set. It wasn't released at the time it was recorded in the early 70s, because the two of them were on different labels (Island and DJM in the UK and A&M and MCA in the U.S.) and a deal couldn't be worked out.
