  • Congratulations to whoever saved this recording. She deserves to be in the pantheon of the greatest female blues voices including Holiday, Thornton and James. Throw in Sonny Boy and Willie Dixon and Lord almighty it gets no better than this.

  • I keep coming back, thanks Mae Mercer...amazing performance

  • Who is on Harmonica please.

  • "i hope you like it from a dead colored woman, cuz that's only way you gonna get it from me!" ~ Mae Mercer from The Beguiled. Outstanding performance!

  • i fall in love with her about two years ago..

  • beautiful!

  • I love "Internet" & "Youtube" ..Thanks for posting.

  • thats the prettiest thing ever

  • ❤ R.I.P. Mae Mercer & many many thanks for sharing your talent with us ❤

  • Strange, because Mae Mercer was NOT member of the "American Folk Blues Festival". In the European tour 1964, which includes both, Sonny Boy, Howlin' Wolf and Sunnyland Slim, the only femaile singer was Sugar Pie Desanto. Maybe this "new" singer with that low voice, Mae mercer, was used only in this TV programme because she was definietly not on tour with the rest of the A.F.B.F. 1964 (or else).

  • she is stunning

  • Best video of that tour, save Howlin' Wolfe (who was introduced by Mae Mercer). Incredible note to these "videos," the director, choreographar and lightman were geniuses beyond their time. This video is tops in my favorites collection. Many thanks, old son.

  • she seems to have a lot of grandchildren?

other than that...no complaints at all.

    in fact, quite lovely.

  • I personally find it hard to believe that almost 2 months from now would be the one year anniversary of her death.

  • Hello,

could you post any record from Mae Mercer? It would be truly great. I give her my sorrow. Thanks for your posts.

  • I wouldn't know. I'd have to talk it over with my parents. I personally would love to put some of the music she has done on.

  • Please, try it!. Kisses

  • What an absolutely brilliant blues performance. Wishing there was more Mae Mercer recordings available. Truly electrofying.

  • Yeah my Grandmother was a very good singer, she used to sing sometimes during our family reunions.

    It was always the blues.

  • The great Mabel mercer in one I've never seen! Fabulous!

  • This is not Mabel Mercer, rather Mae mercer a great blues singer that died last year (24 years after Mabel died)

  • That was my grandmother. Rest in peace, Grandmother, you will be missed.

  • she sound like nina simone black singers sound alot like back then

  • That's what I call "soul."

  • I am reminded of Amazing Grace the way she sings the song. She gives a deeper meaning to Carless Love.

  • She is spectacular, beyond this world. Words cannot describe her talent.

  • THE BEST!

  • Amazing. I had never heard Mae Mercer until now. Thank you so much for posting.

  • top notch! She was an imposing singer.

  • So glad this footage is being looked after,

    Woohoo!

    "Baby I got the blues!"

  • Sonny Boy Williamson was one of the two fathers of modern harmonica. Cool to see him in this! He was a mighty fine side-man to Mae Mercer. What a fine piece!

  • why do we have too wait till they die before we get to hear of musicians dammit. aint good for us and it aint good for them. cant see how its good for a record company either. der.

  • "why do we have too wait till they die before we get to hear of musicians"

    That's not it at all.

Nowadays we hear about them.. their homogenized, pre-digested commercialism is thrust in our faces and shoved down our throats constantly.

Sadly however, most today aren't musicians...

  • WELL PUT, MY FRIEND!!!!!!

  • I have to thank you for this.

I have only ever seen Mae Mercer

    as the Evil Stepmother

in a 1978 African-American production of Cinderella called CINDY starring Charlayne Woodard, Clifton Davis, Nell Carter and Alaina Reid. Does else anyone remember that?

  • @ShangoJamal Yes!! I remember that movie to this day! I came across this clip of Ms. Mae Mercer looking for it. I wore it out my VHS it was on as a child b/c I watched it so much. Ah, memories...would love to see it again but to my knowledge it has never been released. :-(

  • @atruesoutherngal I have a copy of CINDY on DVD. Got it from a now defunct distributor in Germany 3 years ago. Inbox me if you are interested in having a copy. I will give you all the necessary details to make that happen.

  • Amazing!! I'd never seen this before. Mae Mercer was one of a kind!!. There will never be another. She will be missed.

  • Excellent rendition of Classic African American blues

  • This is the most fascinating and delicious performance ever by a female blues performer. Mae Mercer is mesmerizing. It is like Willie Dixon says, the low down dirty blues.

  • ¡¡¡Síiiiii, qué caracter de Lady Mercer, nos deja sin aliento!!! She really got the blues and the band shares them all to our soul!

  • this is INCREDIBLE. what a poetry!!! Thank You for sharing (from Poland)

  • Thanks to you for this sweet comment. From Spain, Maria José.

  • Holy Jeez... that's incredible. Here I thought Mae Mercer was just a one hit wonder in the world of B Movies. Turns out she was even cooler on stage. Check out my vid to see why she should have been given more acting roles.

  • I give this duo a +10.

  • I love that music very much! Can anyone say, where I can find some other videos about that overwhelming lady? Greatings from Germany, Andre

  • Look at the American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1965. Sorry I have not anymore on Mae Mercer. Thanks for your comment from Spain. Maria Jose
