Just bought the cd. Thanks i can tell this will be vary helpful ! Im self taught and been playing for about 18 years, and this is the stuff I always wanted to know :)
How far would you need to be with theory for this lesson?
After 3 years of playing guitars with this routine;
first get to know the song out of my head, the whole guitar singing in my head, looking up videos, helping myself out with tabs,re-checking ,tweaking etc and after that just play with only the song for the rest of your life.
So music theory wise I haven't even started, but to be able to understand the scales,to be able to hear them I first need to know what the musical notation of them are?
Just wondering, why have Red Dream etc been removed from iTunes? I noticed when i got Bare Bones a while back but i thought it was just an error or something.
You should do a lesson on something like world domination and then hide it as an easter egg in one of your lessons... I don't know why I thought of that.
Hey Chappers, Totally, Totally F'ing Cool that you've got this up!! After viewing your clips over the past yr and the jamming you do with your peers, it's great to see that it's come back to where it almost always start..."how do I do this...?" It's great to Metal-Out and just jam with pals, but some times we want to know the language a bit better and this sort of thing brings it all back home. CHEERS!!!
@DALE97DSM says... "There is no difference between the blues scale and pentatonic scale. Both begin at position one, Thats the 12fret. but it can go on any fret though."
Congratulations, Sir. This is THE most idiotic thing I have ever read anywhere on the planet. hearty "well done". Someone call Guinness book!
(Chap why would you waste your valuable time on this silly ass-hat?)
@mcolquitt DALE97DSM is the musical equivalent of the "before" photo in an "I got ripped abs in two weeks" advert. Remains to be seen if he'll make it to "after"...
@RobChappers What do you mean theres no difference between a blues scale and pentatonic scale? Chappers is exacly right haha. I imagine by purchasng 'Train Your Ears' you'll learn the 'scale spelling' and then realize that there is a difference. I was abit confused by you saying "There is no difference between the blues scale and pentatonic scale", as if you were to play them you'd straight away know theres a difference, just from playing the fingering pattern, despite its spelling.

@DALE97DSM jesus dude, you need Train Your Ears big time. not even. knowing what a blues scale and a pentatonic are doesn't even require sooper epic auditory and tonal understanding. The first thing I ever learned was an A Major Pentatonic. And it's "blues scale" evolution. And trust me, there is a big difference.
Some dudes need this right now! Like ChrisFeener , kirkpetrucci , and the motherf of Hittarcuesta , those that claim to be musicians and learn by tabs ...
I bought this on cd early this year and it's very good. More than a few cheesy jokes but good fun and a very useful tool. This is one area I neglected for ages :( but this is helping considerably, worth checking out.
I starting yelling. Your eloquence is devastating. I completely agree with Rob. I hear music in everything and I have for years. One time I opened a bathroom door in a restaurant and it sounded like a saxophone blowing out a G note while a song was on the house radio that was in Eb. I forgot about my original purpose for being in that room and began to play the door in time with the song. I also began to harmonize with the door by singing a Db. Music is EVERYWHERE.
I'm noticing a lot of posts here from guys who really have no music theory knowledge at all proclaiming to "Know the way".
Before looking to take advice from anyone on the subject of music theory, I would recommend not listen to their "Marketing", but instead look at their "Music" and the following that music has gathered, after all the proof of the pudding is in the eating...
@RobChappers Nice album! I'm very interested, however I wonder if this will help me train my ears in recognizing different keys in music? That's the area I'm looking to improve so I hope this will help me!
to be honest i think it would be better off with a video like a tuition dvd. nonetheless this is something very very very valuable. every musician should have this. i had this for my exams in music at high school but i found it very hard to exactly hear things and think hey thats a C. also listening to melodies and than writing down what the melody was. guess its just practice thats the magic word here.
Love the AKG headphones on the cover. I have the k240s myself. Your one cool dude rob, keep doing this youtube bit, idk what I would do without your comical, awesome, and informative videos
ah man this is just what the doctor ordered ! I cannot express how much I need this, but also how there is nothing out there that I want to listen to, I'm sure chapman verbal queef's will keep me entertained as I "TRAIN MY EARS" *camera shake* *explosion*. done.
I had wanted this lesson before but i didn't want to bother my dad to borrow his credit card to buy it on your website, but now that it is on iTunes i am about to leave to go get a gift card to go buy it. Thanks for putting it on iTunes Rob, it is much more convenient for me.

Right mr chapman. I have purchased the album from iTunes. It better be good! If I am not able to create epic rock inside a week you will be hearing from my lawyer, or possibly my mum!!!!!
brilliant stuff Rob, I started this at MI 13 years ago and it has been the biggest and most important thing I have learned as a musician; to everyone go get this lesson it is the single most important thing you can learn and will, if you let it; open every door to you musicaly. Rob makes light of it, but seriously this is the single most important thing you can ever learn
Rob, I noticed there's some stuff about triads and such. Do you cover just major scale triads or do you also cover harmonic and melodic minor triads as well? That's something I really need help with in my music program.
Chappers do you have anything similar to this but as a video? I had first experience jamming with a few folk in a while last night and i struggled with playing outside "the box" when soloing, also would like to know more about chord shapes ect and what chords make up what types of patterns, so I can then try and apply some of the modal stuff I've been taking in over the years! not much to ask for really ha! Also.....
@bellers Also I know ur busy n that, but i mailed u a while back bout skype lessons but didnt get a reply, I would still be interested but maybe getting a dvd or sumin would be a good first step? Cheers man
When you study theory, you study the relations between these chords and notes, and why they sound good when played in a certain way, and why you can break the rules of traditional harmony and still manage to make them sound good. Your ears get trained over time, with no need of a course like this, but even at school (music institute) i had ear training classes, with things such as chord recognition, intervals recognition, etc.. It's always good to have some guidance when you're starting
I always listen for train horns by my house because they always come out to a tritone..and I always jam with it with some diminished/augmented runs x)
@RoathRipper When I initially launched it I had around 6000 subs, It never got the exposure it deserved and the original title was a touch confusing to beginners :-)
@bassguitarkeybordwiz I think this course is about relative pitch not perfect...And truth is the first is much more important than the second and it can actually get trained...while the second...you either have it or you dont...there is no (valid anyways) training method for it.
Purchased without a second thought, face it £20 quid for a guitar lesson, a little over a third for something I can listen to again and again, I'll never be much cop but great to see you doing something for us without any natural feel for these things, yeah it might be 'commercial' but I'll cross your palms with imperial credits any day, nice one Rob
"how many times have you wanted to learn a super cool tune that you just heard, but you can't because no one on ultimate guitar has uploaded a free tab for you to download" <-- fucking story of my life :P
Chappers I'm willing to buy the course soon, I just want to know from where can I learn theory? without the tuitions and stuff lik that, I've been playing for 3 years now, but I feel like there's something missing so I'm going for the theory, thank you in advance.
@DeadlyVisionsx The internet and youtube have literally everything and more. Between just google and youtube there is more theory, scales, chord charts, and everything guitar and music. Just google how theory applies to rock guitar or something. The thing about ear training as it applies to modes is if you don't know what the REAL sound a mode is suppose to make or the feeling it puts out you will never truly be able to use it freely and with full use, Its really just shades and moods.
i know its weird but whenever i hear music, in my head i just dream and imagine different scenarios between a boy and a girl and the emotions/feelings being expressed, chappers you fucking rock1
@sr1129 theres no such thing as a major 4th or 5th. 4ths, 5ths, 1sts, and octaves are all perfect intervals, and when theyre raised or lowered theyre called augmented and diminished intervals
@DanDeePee modes of the major scale it is when in regards to a major scale. All the modes are just a wee bit off from the major scale. Obviously for example with lydian if you have a #4 then it isnt a major 4th interval from c (if u use c as an example) But if you harmonize the scale (c) its never going to be f minor. but in regards to the 1st which i never said and the 5th is neither major or minor. Harmonized it will always be in the same place regardless of the 3rd
Beethoven proved you can do it without ears (admittedly he did have them when he was younger). A feel for harmony is much more important. Everyone on the X-Factor has ears and listen to music....I rest my case.
I like chappers but this is a waste of money. The best way to train your ears is to play and listen to music. With practice you can hear the diff between a minor 3rd and a major 5th or 4th. Studying theory helps tons with ear training but you can break it down even simpler if you dont know what a minor 3rd is. Hearing the diff between 3 semitones and 2 when you play and then listening for it when you listen to your fav music
@sr1129 yes but for some people it may take longer than most and everyone has to start somewhere so why not give this a try? i don't doubt it would help in some way
@RobChappers dont let my comment **chap** your ass. I like you and your videos and respect you a lot as a musician. If you re read the comment you have to play, learn theory and think about those things when listening to music. The best way to know your ear is trained is when you can pickup on things while listening, I find this helps with timing too. I personally would do lessons with u if I was in U.K. I just happen to think you offer better things than this particular product.
@SixStringSolid but all in all this is the part where just because I dont think this is one of the better things chappers has come out with all the fan boys here will flame me. Even though I like chappers and his vids. I swear its like people cant have an opinion on YT wout every one getting their ass CHAPPED...sry been having a good time w that. as mentioned to the other guy the 5th falls in the same place regardless of major or minor.
I always wanted to know all the stuff that Rob talks about.....until I met Jimmy Bower (from eyehategod) and he told me that he never practiced his guitar playing and never leaned any scale. he just plays guitar when he is jamming with his band and just plays how he feels it is right to him. he also told me that every one can do it that way, because he is the best example that it can work out. Jimmy is one of the most inspiring guy I have ever met. He also wrote some of the coolest riffs I know.
Chappers your awesome man! your vids r great bloak.

i know its weird but whenever i hear music, in my head i just dream and imagine different scenarios between a boy and a girl and the emotions/feelings being expressed, chappers you fucking rock1

@sr1129 theres no such thing as a major 4th or 5th. 4ths, 5ths, 1sts, and octaves are all perfect intervals, and when theyre raised or lowered theyre called augmented and diminished intervals
DanDeePee 2 months ago
@DanDeePee modes of the major scale it is when in regards to a major scale. All the modes are just a wee bit off from the major scale. Obviously for example with lydian if you have a #4 then it isnt a major 4th interval from c (if u use c as an example) But if you harmonize the scale (c) its never going to be f minor. but in regards to the 1st which i never said and the 5th is neither major or minor. Harmonized it will always be in the same place regardless of the 3rd

Getting a little bit David Brent there for a minute I thought...
guitargogden 2 months ago
Beethoven proved you can do it without ears (admittedly he did have them when he was younger). A feel for harmony is much more important. Everyone on the X-Factor has ears and listen to music....I rest my case.

Hey Chappers, my hearings pretty buggered, I have a hearing aid in each ear, will this still be able to help me.

@madgeniusmusic Yeah... my dad wears hearing aids, it's more about the mental map which is built up than your "Hearing quality" ;-)

I like chappers but this is a waste of money. The best way to train your ears is to play and listen to music. With practice you can hear the diff between a minor 3rd and a major 5th or 4th. Studying theory helps tons with ear training but you can break it down even simpler if you dont know what a minor 3rd is. Hearing the diff between 3 semitones and 2 when you play and then listening for it when you listen to your fav music
sr1129 2 months ago
@sr1129 yes but for some people it may take longer than most and everyone has to start somewhere so why not give this a try? i don't doubt it would help in some way

@sr1129 Refreshing and challenging advice from a professional music educator!!!
Many thanks for your valuable thought provoking input into this often daunting & confusing subject...
No really, your premiss of "Listening to music is the best way to train your ears" had me deep in thought for seconds.
RobChappers 2 months ago 24
@RobChappers dont let my comment **chap** your ass. I like you and your videos and respect you a lot as a musician. If you re read the comment you have to play, learn theory and think about those things when listening to music. The best way to know your ear is trained is when you can pickup on things while listening, I find this helps with timing too. I personally would do lessons with u if I was in U.K. I just happen to think you offer better things than this particular product.

@RobChappers LOL! I believe I've possibly just read the best example ever of the phrase "dripping with sarcasm" :)
soundboy3 2 months ago
@RobChappers Indeed, he's dispelled the prevailing notion that the best way to train one's ears is to NOT listen to music.

SixStringSolid 2 months ago
