If you've got no one around you and have an empty net, the SMART play is to walk it in so there's no chance of fucking up and missing from the circle if you shoot it. He was moving his stick correctly to put the puck into the net when the puck mysteriously jumps up off the ice surface. It just hit a bad spot. The ice is partly to blame, but he made a small mistake of walking the puck in slightly away from the net and then trying to redirect it in at the last second. If he had walked it in **straight** toward the net (LIKE OTHER PLAYERS HAVE DONE), he wouldn't have even had to redirect it, and if it had bounced it wouldn't have even mattered.
He should have directed the puck toward the net as soon as possible. Directing it away from the net and then trying to tap it in at the last second is just asking for trouble.
If you are crossing a busy highway where you know the speed limit is high but you are going to chance it (and you can see the cars whizzing by), then yes. It is your damn fault for getting hit. Other than that, I can't see how your metaphor remotely makes sense. It doesn't matter his reasoning for getting in close. If he went in to take a shot at the net in the crease, and was suddenly shocked by the fact that the ice was uneven, well....I guess he got hit by a car, right?

There are a few things I grew up knowing about hockey. And I haven't played an NHL game in my life. One. A good passing game is what will win a Stanley Cup, and icing is for sissies. Two. You never ever shoot in the crease if you don't have to because the goalies have been chopping up that ice since the game began. So you can bet your ass that if I know this, some idiot that gets paid to play knows it. The puck bounced. He should have expected it.

anyone who has actually played hockey knows that a puck can hit a rut in the ice and jump right over your stick.
the announcer may say that he's be around the game for 25 years, but he's obviously never stepped on the ice himself. this is a fluke event, not a disgrace to hockey.

the whole reason it's stefan's fault is he should have never been in the situation where it could bounce over his stick a simple shot a second earlier and its game over. I watched the whole game and he was definately being cocky and it cost him. And those people saying he's not worried about it cause he knows hockey, his coach Dave Tippet tore into him and said he should be embarrassed and i think he knows something about hockey.

The announcer should be embarrassed for his comments and apologize to Stefan. This replay video CLEARLY shows that Stefan did nothing wrong. He was moving his stick correctly to put the puck into the net when the puck mysteriously jumps up off the ice surface. It just hit a bad spot. This would have happened to ANY player in this same spot. I repeat, to ANY player. Stefan did NOT screw up.

The ice is partly to blame, but he made a small mistake of walking the puck in slightly away from the net and then trying to redirect it in at the last second. If he had walked it in **straight** toward the net (LIKE OTHER PLAYERS HAVE DONE), he wouldn't have even had to redirect it, and if it had bounced it wouldn't have even mattered.

He should have directed the puck toward the net as soon as possible. Directing it away from the net and then trying to tap it in at the last second is just asking for trouble.

If you are crossing a busy highway where you know the speed limit is high but you are going to chance it (and you can see the cars whizzing by), then yes. It is your damn fault for getting hit. Other than that, I can't see how your metaphor remotely makes sense. It doesn't matter his reasoning for getting in close. If he went in to take a shot at the net in the crease, and was suddenly shocked by the fact that the ice was uneven, well....I guess he got hit by a car, right?

There are a few things I grew up knowing about hockey. And I haven't played an NHL game in my life. One. A good passing game is what will win a Stanley Cup, and icing is for sissies. Two. You never ever shoot in the crease if you don't have to because the goalies have been chopping up that ice since the game began. So you can bet your ass that if I know this, some idiot that gets paid to play knows it. The puck bounced. He should have expected it.
