I realize most of the comments about it are pretty old at this point, but it only got faster because the director (same person who arranged the music) decided it should get faster. He was consistent in his direction, so it must have been that there wasn't enough time to fit it in otherwise. There was indecision that week* as to whether we should do Styx or Journey, and we ended up doing both, so he was likely strapped for time. (*Yes, a new show for every home game)

@Smytherrs Playing it at a fast and upbeat tempo is one thing. But starting the song at a slower tempo and rushing throughout the entire piece is another. that's what im getting at. Count the beats at the beginning and you'll see that they're rushin' like Soviets throughout the entire song.

Usually band directors shouldn't be doing much for the marching band besides providing music and arranging the marching sequences. The drum major (and section leaders) should be in charge of the band.

Depending on the program, and what instrument you play, you may have to audition. This will be indicated on the information you find/ are provided. Typically, the more renown programs will require auditions, but it really varies from university to university.
