A friend of mine used to shoot wolf almost exclusively for years in his AR. He started getting bulged cases and failure;s to feed. I tried to put a GO gauge in his chamber but it would go in. We took the barrel off and looked in the chamber, he used a steel rod from the end of the barell to knock a case out and scratched the chamber. So he couldn't get any ammo much less a gauge in there. Now he has a new barrel and shoots brass cases ammo only. Just putin that out there for everyone.
Ruger specifically calls out Wolf saying it ruins extractors. I have shot THOUSANDS (somewhere around 3,000) through my Mini 14 and have never had a single problem with it. Good quality firearms, that are cleaned and oiled properly, shouldn't have any problems firing this ammo.
It might work okay. Sure. But a lot of manufacturers state that shooting wolf ammo specifically voids your warranty. Take that for what it's worth.
If Springfield Armory, CMMG, Red Jacket, DMPS, etc think it's too crappy to put in their guns, why risk it? What if almost every new car said it's warranty was voided if you put, say, BP or Exxon gas in your car? Would you put it in then? Probably not. I know I wouldn't. That's my $0.02
Read my comment, it was not my gun that blew up (I don’t shoot wolf). Blame the guns and the people instead of your product, just like any sales man would. Because of the exploded guns I have seen (most likely from the over powdered wolf ammo they were shooting) and because of how dirty wolf ammo shoots, I won’t risk penny ammo in my expensive guns. PLEASE STOP trying to sell me on you product. For just a few cents more I can buy ammo I trust, the risk on your product is not worth it.
Well, if a gun shoots fine, has no problems at all, then shoots wolf ammo and blows up in your hand... how could you not think it was the ammo? These were not used and abused guns, they looked new (but blown up). After talking with the range owner, he also believed it was something like a "double powder" in the wolf ammo.
@flyjoshh wolf powder is if anything heavily underpowered..... so im gonna say that it was you... because the vast majority of equipment problems that i see happening with people are because they do not know how (or just dont) handle their gear correctly
No, the damage comes with too much powder. I have seen one glock, and one AR15 that blew appart. When I asked the shooting range owner what happened to the guns, he said they were shooting wold ammo when it happened. Steel casing is fine, Hornady is making some for competition, thats not the problem. As a re-loader, I have double powdered in the past and know its an unsafe thing. Its wolf's quality checking on powder that I will never buy it. Dont blow up a $1000 gun for penny ammo...
@flyjoshh ok, so wheres the proof that wolf ammo was the cause? just because there was a malfunction while shooting a certain type of ammo, its the ammos fault? im not trying to be rude but theres a big hole in your logic/ your friends logic.
Get a cheap(er) AR-15. The market is flooded with AR-15 rifles for little more than a cheap AKM and there is also a glut of high quality pistols. Abuse the hell out of an AR or an AK and see which one would you pick WTSHF...I'm grabbing my AKM and tactical vest with a 1911 pistol and a .380 backup. That's why I like my WASR-10 Romanian. Pull the trigger, and more than likely it's going to go bang every time.
Oh BTW my Romanian WASR UF is not the only tool. I have a 1911, a .380backup piece, 10/22 with BX-25 mags firing CCI high velocity to move that heavy Ruger action and a Remington 870 shotgun. Also getting a Saiga 12 gauge, a Sig P238 and a Ruger SR 1911
I have some surplus Russian 7.62 x 39mm milsurp Ulyanosk ammo, steel cased and it comes in 640 round "spam can" for prolonged storage. I held a magnet up to a few rounds and they were all magnetic. I don't have a problem with it. I use paper or wood targets. Steel or fine metal jacketed with brass case makes it more powerful like an AP shell as opposed to straight copper jacket ammo. I've fired tons and tons of milsurp and WOLF, and while not the best rounds they are cheap and very potent.
I have a Russian made SKS. It loves the Wolf 7.62x39mm. Always shoots good groups, and always goes bang. If a manufacturer makes my caliber, i have bought it. I have bought ammo at four times the cost per round as the Wolf, and had no better groups. After a day at the range you clean your weapon. If you dont, you are looking for trouble no matter what ammo you buy.
I had no idea Wolf ammo was magnetic. I took out a small magnet I keep in my gun cleaning kit and put it up to a Wolf 9mm handgun round and sure enough it stuck to it. Tried that with a brass cased Hornady round and it didn't stick.
CMMG states specifically in the owners manual that use of wolf ammo in their AR-15's will void warranty. Check the manual. that stuff is garbage i have used it. Very inconsistent in my experience
@huntwithairguns I certainly don't need help figuring that out. Match? it doesn't even rate substandard. hence voiding the warranty if used. it's garbage and a waste of money in my opinion. if you use it, fine I just don't like running crap through 1000.00 rifles.
Good info ,thanks. Wolf ammo sure is cheap BUT man do they dirty up the chamber. Unless youre going for accurate, long shot then you be best to reload yourself or buy better known ammo other than that great for just shooting. ,Just keep in mind to clean the rifle/pistol
"AND" > Wolf is very velocity inconsistent, Your FPS will vary a LOT with each round. My only gripe with Wolf is the carbon build up & poor accuracy at distance. It works fine (feeds ejects) in all the ARs I have had except things set up for high accuracy. I kind of assumed it was due to the tight tolerances in a high precision gun but I might be wrong. It could be a timing issue. I wasn't thinking along those lines. I was thinking the steel was tight in a precision chamber. Either way, Wolf is fine for plinking & kind of pointless in a gun set up for high accuracy. Good vid.Thx
I have fired over 1000 rounds of the Wolf/WPA 9mm, Military Classic, Berdan Primer, Russian ammo through my Springfield XD9. One round failed to fire. ONE. I have heard several people complain about the polymer coating, but I have never had a problem. Maybe those people had a dirty weapon to start with or just a cheap one. Yes, Wolf is cheap, but that is just what I want sometimes at the range.
@cbond99 Modern ammunition manufacturing should allow for one failed round per 100k or so...I have NEVER had center-fire ammo from a US manufacturer fail to go "bang", and only once with Tula brand, and they have lost my business forever. You do sometimes get what you pay for. I never want to wonder whether my bullet will go off.
I concur, Thank you great information. I have been using this ammo for many years and have not ever had any problems. I have also been using Tulammo wit no problems , can you shed any light on that product. Note I also use wolf and tulammy in 45 cal, and 9 mm and works great. I hope some day that we can make affordable ammo in teh States for this kind of prices.
Excellent! Finally, someone else who believes what I always have. I also have shot thousands and thousands of rounds of Wolf through my Colt and Olympic Arms AR's, no problems at all. One thing though, I can zero time and again with Wolf ( 1 & 2 hundred yds. ). No problems with accuracy here. Great video!
I love wolf ammo! It's cheap and goes boom mostly. Since I'm not a precision shot I rely on combat torso accuracy...I think any ammo is good enough for that.
Ya any factory made ammo that voids warranties on some manufactures rifles is not anything I'm ever gonna put threw my gun. Glad to see its not as horrible as all the story's tell, maybe I would pick up a box off some dead guy if A WROL type situation ever happened lol.
nice video!! well spoken and well organized ,most seem to ramble back and forth again and again covering up the point sometimes.i also agree with you. and would like to add in my experience with this weapon system(ar series) likes brass but will cycle steel case ammo nicely. seems to me that weapons built in eastern block countries like steel and allied weapons like brass.design differences maybe?but i have tried wolf in my ar and brass in my ak and seems like they have preferences.TY for UL.
my AR always stovepipes when firing Wolf ammunition. Whether corrosive or not, it still stovepipes, and that still requires racking the action. I don't really care what other people do, but I'll avoid it unless I absolutely need it.
I shot about 100 rounds of wolf through my AR the first day and did not clean the rifle. Went back to the range 3 days later to shoot again. Halfway through the first mag I got a stuck case. After clearing the rifle and a bit of fiddling I realized this was no ordinary stuck case.
After a complete disassemble and every solvent known to man being tried the stuck case remained. A 5 dollar box of ammo cost me a $200 barrel.
I now reload my own for the same cost as buying junk ammo.
My gun smith and the Glock armoror both told me not to ever shoot Russian steel case ammo through my Glock.Am not arguing that it will am just stating what they told me.
My Mini-14 doesn't like the Wolf stuff I ran through it,I had case sticking, jams and misfeeding.I ran some Winchester brass cased through with no problems. I know with My Mk 2 pistol, that rugers can be picky with ammo though,so I don't think the wold stuff is bad in itself, the gun just doesn't like it.
Of course it shoots great in My Mak-90,I can run the cheapest ammo through that and never have a problem.
Dude, had a thread on ar15.com going over all sorts of possible causes for my fte issues.. Had all sorts of input for some real helpful guys, long story short your explanation was the nail on the head. The darn casing!! Gonna hotlink this vid. 1000 thanks. Your the man!
Great Video, best I have seen on a Wolf review. I looked for a video on wolf, just bought 500 rounds instead of the 62 grn M885. Very happy you had a positive review on it. Thanks and keep them coming.
@filoIII not entirely true. Hi-points tough? Yes. BUT.. they are constructed out of mostly zinc alloy, not steel. Steel being harder than zinc could possibly damage the zinc alloy parts. That being said.. my 995ts eats nothing but cheap steel cased ammo and shows no signs of abnormal wear or damage.
@SpaZ762 I didn't say it's THE toughest out there. I guy that works at a gun shop said many military in the mid east request Hi-point's for their toughness, simple blow-back design, and can chunk 'em if they go bad cause they're cheap.
I would never rely on Wolf’s Military Classic ammo! I have had very few problems with the Black Box Wolf ammo. Please take into fact that I have used this ammo in my AR-15 7.62x39. It is a great plunking ammo and I used it to test the C Products LLC 7.62x39 Mags with few problems.
I have never had any luck with this ammo. I have had all three caliber ( 9mm, .40, and 45 acp) exlpode in the chambers and split the case down the side. I also had a .223 explode after a misfire in my AR. I will never use this ammo again.
Do you know of any good high cap mags for the Ruger Mini 14? I know it is not a tactical gun, but it is a lot of fun to shoot and is verry capable. Thank's.
Thank you for this video. The internet is full of "experts" that don't have a clue, and I appreciate the thoughtful, intelligent, and thorough explanation of what is and what is NOT happening with Wolf ammo. I have a 16" HBAR AR-15 and have over 1500 rounds through it, 100% Wolf WPA with zero issues.
Yes it's dirty, it's ammo. I clean/lube my guns after each outing, and if you want a weapon that performs reliably you probably should too. Thanks again.
I have a concern about the copper washed steel bullets used by Herters, Wolf, and Tula. I have recovered fired 62 gr .223 bullets that have no rifling grooves engraved on them due to the hard steel. I pulled a few, melted the lead out and tried to crush them with a vise grip and was unable to do so. Do you think steel bullets cause bore wear? I just cant make myself use them anymore after I found this out. Thanx for everything. Braden
Hey I was looking into getting a rock river arms soon but the barrel on what i'm looking at is 16 inches. Do you think wolf would still shoot alright? I'm trying to make my decision because I want to be able to shoot my gun often and practice with it and wolf just seems like the ammo to do that with. I'd love to hear back from you, thanks!
Hey Sturmgewehre, Question: I have a 20" DPMS Ar-15 rifle in the A2 configuration. I have been running the federal brass cased 55gr. ammo through it and it has a chrome-moly barrel on it. I was curious if you would happen to know what the barrel life on a gun like that would be? thank you.
I have been shooting Wolf through my DPMS Oracle and have noticed that I will sometimes get a FTE. I have considered a stronger extractor/spring but I am not sure if it would just take the base of the case off instead leaving the whole thing. It is much easier to get out a whole case than it is one with a missing base IMO.
my issue with wolf is that it seems to be loaded way weaker than the 5.56 brass nato xm193 or the m855...so weak in fact that it doesn't cycle in any of my ar's....
Wolf does exactly what it is supposed to be great on the range but if life or death dont know that it would be my go to in anything but my AK. Thanks for the great video check mine out to see how my piston conversion held up. have a good one.
good video but one thing you did not cover, or you may not be aware of, with some of the steel case ammo. is it rusting in the box.and causing the coating to crack in the chamber. I have had this happen with TUL AMMO. go to my channel and watch my video on it. and let me know what you think.
very nicely put together! i always run wolf hollow points in my Rock River LAR-15 and have never had timing issues.. and saved a pretty penny over the years ;). timing is one thing that i do not know much about, so it's off to google. have a good one, and keep up the good work.
@Sturmgewehre I found the pistol ammo to be a little under powered, so some pistols that are sesitive to that may not work well with it. Other then that and the fact that it seems to leave a lot of carbon behind, I always found it to work fine as well.
wolf is military grade ammo meant to be shot out of military grade firearms, most people who complain are trying to fire it out of commercial grade guns. ive never had problems with wolf or other russian vairants(all made by barnaul).
thanks for the real facts, hear too much nonsense at the range or the store about Wolf. I've got thousands of rounds of this and shot many more and had no outstanding problems.
Thank you for this information before I knew it was even a problem. With every redneck loving recreation there will be myths regurgitated over and over until it's considered truth by everyone. DAT EFFANOL WILL EAT YOUR ENGIN SEALS AND GASKITS!
WOW! fantastic reviews! For months I foolishly assumed this was a channel for older firearms due to the username and passed it off... I've been missing out soooo much! I've been cycling through as many vids as possible tonight, but it may take some time to get through everything!...XD
I beg to differ. I had lacquer coated Wolf ammo get stuck in the chamber of my rifle during a 3-day Carbine Class. I had to switch rifles at about 500-rds because of the stuck case. I had made the mistake of letting the sit in the hot chamber between strings. I have not had the same issue with the polymer coated Wolf. I and my buddies have run into issued with poor QC with primers installed backwards. I go through about 8k rounds of ammo a year, most of that Wolf.
I have a 20 inch DPMS that will just not feed this stuff. I have had failures to feed, and failures to extract about every other round and the ones that do cycle seem to not have enough powder in them to push the bolt all the way back. Ive had a couple of really nasty jams too where the weapon completely locked up and I couldn't get the bolt open, so Im definitely staying away from this with my AR. My Cx4 eats this stuff up though.
This subject runs to the notion that if YOU believe it isn't the best choice of ammo for your weapon, just DON'T use it! There are so many other choices out there that you would be foolish to use the stuff.
Oh ok I have just heard some things about It but i guess every gun has its own quirks that need to be worked out I will just need to run some through mine because I'm always looking for a cheaper yet quality alternative when shooting...
I personally do not like Wolf Ammo. In a Ruger Mini 14, I was shooting a one foot group with it at 50 yards, and it kept jamming. When I switched over to Vietnam-era Issue 5.56 mm NATO I was able to shoot a one and a half inch group at 50 yards.
I love wolf ammo. However, every gun is different and some guns are mor pickier than others. My XCR loves wolf ammo. It will eat it up all day everyday but my Scar just loves to rip the heads off the casings and leaves me with a stuck casing in the chamber. I agree on buying a couple of boxes and see if your particular rifles likes the ammo or not.
@melikesid Did you listen to what he said? In the SCAR, tune down your gas system or put in a heavier buffer/spring. Slow down the timing and it will give the steelcase some time to cool and properly extract.
@545krinkify lol. Just about. It's in the foothills where there was a massive fire 2 years ago that took like 3 weeks to control (Google "Station fire"). Every time I shoot a surplus rifle there, they come over and check my cartridges with a magnet.
Great video and very informative. I would love to shoot cheaper ammo in my AR but the range I use doesn't allow them (fire hazard). I use PMC .223 and Federal Lake City 5.56 and both are pretty accurate for plinking.
great video, thanks. I shoot silver bear in gas piston AR and it performs great. I had only one fail to fire out of just over 1000 rounds. It turned out my front trigger pin had cracked, replaced the pin and no issues since. I will check out some wolf.
ever were on the net buying in bolk is sold out, i used to buy a thousand rounds at a time but if any body know any thing about this please let me know, thanks
@scuds03 about 200fps slower than m855, its just inferior in almost every way. but thats to be expected in a lower end plinking ammo. but its still good to practice with though it is dirtier, less velocity, and less accurate.
thank you for the info, its helped me with lingering questions about wolf ammo. iv knoticed the extra dirtyness at the end of a shoot. also wolf has hps that are more accurate than the ball ammo.
So you're trying to tell me that Wolf ammo really *isn't* made by sociopathic Siberian wolves that the Spetsnaz trained to feast on the eyeballs of babies and nuns, and thus *isn't* more badass than regular ball ammo??!? Looks like I'm gonna go back to Cletus and Billy Joe Jim Bob's gun shop and demand a refund...! lol
Also: Never fire Wolf ammunition at a steel target, I caught a ricochet to the chest that hurt me pretty badly. It felt like a paintball at pointblank.
many people i know here in the uk use wolf as 99.999% of uk "high" calibire weapons need some form of manual feeding(bolt action stright pull) so it doen't matter as much its not that bad not the best but what do you expect
Get a piston gun,it'll run any steel. PWS, LWRC

TheBattle2142 1 month ago
my AR always stovepipes when firing Wolf ammunition.

Good video. Nice trigger control as well, you can hear the reset in the video.
I have never had an issue with the Russian steel cased stuff, but I run Colt and BCM carbines.
Every issue I have seen so far is from one of the "just as good as" rifles that really isn't, such as Oly and Bushampster.

There isn't a much tougher handgun than a Hi-point, and their techs say don't use steel cased ammo.
filoIII 1 month ago
@filoIII not entirely true. Hi-points tough? Yes. BUT.. they are constructed out of mostly zinc alloy, not steel. Steel being harder than zinc could possibly damage the zinc alloy parts. That being said.. my 995ts eats nothing but cheap steel cased ammo and shows no signs of abnormal wear or damage.
SpaZ762 1 month ago
@SpaZ762 I didn't say it's THE toughest out there. I guy that works at a gun shop said many military in the mid east request Hi-point's for their toughness, simple blow-back design, and can chunk 'em if they go bad cause they're cheap.

I would never rely on Wolf’s Military Classic ammo! I have had very few problems with the Black Box Wolf ammo. Please take into fact that I have used this ammo in my AR-15 7.62x39. It is a great plunking ammo and I used it to test the C Products LLC 7.62x39 Mags with few problems.

Hey Sturmgewehre,
I have a concern about the copper washed steel bullets used by Herters, Wolf, and Tula. Braden
derweibhai 1 month ago
@derweibhai The rifling in your barrel does not touch the steel inside the bullet, only the copper jacket on the outside.

Hey Sturmgewehre, Question: I have a 20" DPMS Ar-15 rifle in the A2 configuration. I have been running the federal brass cased 55gr. ammo through it and it has a chrome-moly barrel on it. I was curious if you would happen to know what the barrel life on a gun like that would be? thank you.
LTblackwood 1 month ago
Works fine in my Glock, but then a glock will fire just about anything.
rickcain2320 1 month ago
I have been shooting Wolf through my DPMS Oracle and have noticed that I will sometimes get a FTE. I have considered a stronger extractor/spring but I am not sure if it would just take the base of the case off instead leaving the whole thing. It is much easier to get out a whole case than it is one with a missing base IMO.

My Cx4 eats this stuff up though.
airsoftdude1990 2 months ago
This subject runs to the notion that if YOU believe it isn't the best choice of ammo for your weapon, just DON'T use it! There are so many other choices out there that you would be foolish to use the stuff.

I agree on buying a couple of boxes and see if your particular rifles likes the ammo or not.
melikesid 3 months ago
@melikesid Did you listen to what he said? In the SCAR, tune down your gas system or put in a heavier buffer/spring. Slow down the timing and it will give the steelcase some time to cool and properly extract.

scuds03 5 months ago
@scuds03 about 200fps slower than m855, its just inferior in almost every way. but thats to be expected in a lower end plinking ammo. but its still good to practice with though it is dirtier, less velocity, and less accurate.
