If the germans had beaten the russians in the war, by taking Moscow, then the Americans would have introduced Berlin to their new toy - the Atomic bomb.
Actually some 58 000 German soldiers were trapped in the pocket. Of these some 40 000 escaped the pocket. Among trapped and later escaped soldiers were couple of thousand Russian auxiliaries. Moreover it's somewhat ironic that there were couple of hundred Russian prisoners of war who preferred stay and escape with Germans although they had a chance to go back to Red Army.
@Olts100 yes... so the feel-good (read: bullshit) story goes... if so many escaped, how come they left their dead general (supreme commander of the encircled forces -- Wilhelm Stemmermann) behind?
While some undoubtedly escaped (hundreds rather than thousands), there was no organized breakthrough, most were killed in action, some were taken prisoner.
Also most of those who escaped, were soon killed in massed artillery and air strikes.
Had they surrendered, most would've been home by 1955.
@Cinedocumentalist Stemmermann was fighting in the rear and was killed by AT fire, but generals Lieb and Gille got out. As also Degrelle and many others.
No doubt the battle was Soviet victory, but it wasn't "second Stalingrad".
It's interesting to see those Soviet era films, but you have to remember that it's not always truth what you see there.
@Olts100 Generals Lieb, Gille, Degrelle escaped... as they abandoned their troops and were airlifted to "safety". Stemmermann didn't, stayed with his troops & eventually shared their fate.
It's interesting to read, say, wikipedia and lift whole passages from there but it's not always the truth they write there.
While both sides overestimated enemy losses and underestimated their own, Soviet estimates were better grounded in reality -- it was them who had to exhume & rebury the bodies.
@Olts100 ya a lot of propoganda ! мой папа родился на 3 мес ранее там и получил аусвайс..но при отходе немцы зверствовали--особенно сс. бабуля проклинает фашистов.а вермахт говорит хороший.

@Cinedocumentalist Most would be home by 1955? Of the 107,000 German prisoners at Stalingrad, only 5,000 made it home in 1955

Yes , your statements are correct abou the Russians...at that time any
Russian soldier or officer who would accept captivity was considered
a trador. However I doubt your German figures less then 28000 Krauts
managed to escape that terrible pocket, a lesson the dumn Germans
will never forget , a lesson given by the so called " peasant Army or better
said the Ivans " and their Abwehr miscalculated everything perfectly
fitting the German , Austrian and Swiss arrogance !
