This was my Friday & Saturday nights at the Corso & La Mancha in NYC in the late 60's & early 70's. This was when u had to have some serious skills to dance to the music of these masters, I SAW LIVE....WOW. Hell, I may even still have a few moves left in me...lmao.
this is incredible. i just bought a used record for a buck that has this song as performed by edmundo ros. check out that version if you can find it. its also very energetic.
hey that trip was a great adventure! check out herbie playing the same cut on you tube under herbie mann once again brasil its only 3 minutes but herbie at his best
"Jungle Fantasy" es una composición de Esy Morales. En Youtube podéis encontrar clips de la película "Criss Cross" (1949) donde se puede ver a "Esy Morales and his Rhumba band" tocando esta maravillosa pieza musical mientras Yvonne de Carlo y Tony Curtis la bailan bajo la atenta mirada de Burt Lancaster.
@LauraAmiga Thank you LauraAmiga for posting this. Herbie Mann credits Esy Morales as being his first influence on the flute. It was great to actually see and hear him play!
This Piece is very intoxicating! Found it looking for recent dave valentine work, damn i missed his show at the blue note jazz club in january! i regret it! Tito Puente with his his charismatic performance, Lol its great!
hey in 1960 I was in mombasa in kenya and herbie and the other american musicians including roy eldridge did a concert at the local cinema later that night on my way home through old town I heard flute music and came across herbie playing flutes with a local goatherd tending his flock. about 15 years ago at one of his concerts I bumped into him and casually reminded him of that night he looked at me in disbelief I think I was the only white person at the concert let alone that dark path
Fantastic clip. I started playing flute in college after calrinet and sax for ten years. I listened to everything by Herbie and copied it until I get him in my head. My favorite was an album called Latin Fever. If anyone has any, please post.
@amusicianinparis for your education "swing" is slang used by "Latin:" musicians to describe when a tune has soul, no matter which genre of music it is. So ,tremendo swing = it's cooking,it's soulful,it's right on,it's groovus, take your pick.
Thanks to my friend Judith I got to meet Herbie and hear him play live. What a cool guy, fantastic musician and visionary. He always had incredible musicians wanting to play with him. What a great video and performance!
Wow, Herbie was my brother, and seeing this brought back lots of memories.. This music is what interested him in playing the flute loved Essie Morales

These guys seem to only play a few notes altogether between them. They hardly ever leave the scale. And it's just rhythm stuff. Feeling . . .?? Is that supposed to be great?
OMG! Herbie Mann what a guy! To really get edumucated on him, checvk out his excellent tribute record to the great Bill Evans. Now that's some deep stuff.
ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! But you failed to identify one of latin jazz's legends. That's Paquito D'Rivera on alto sax!! He's won 8 Grammy's - nominated 16 times. He's a legend!
Great clip, Thank you. I love all these guys. I too have followed these giants for years, but on one stage. outragious! If you have any more. please add them.
This clip brought back some old memories. I used to do sound work in Miami in the early 80's. Herbie Mann, Dave Valentin, Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, UofM Concert Jazz Band, etc. Love that Latin sound!
Viva la latinidad del jazz.
