I was downloading several versions of this aria but I had to stop watching this one. I was in a public library and people were looking at me because I was suddenly crying like a child. Thank you, woytynowska.
Zylis-Gara had a very substantial career at the Metropolitan, New York, were she was highly admired in Mozart's music. She had a gorgeous, creamy voice and a fine musical sensibility. Too bad she made so few commercial recordings.
She sings this a bit faster than I am used to, but with her usual lovely manner. A treasurable artist, without question.
Gracias Kaya por este magnifico regalo. En efecto la Rusalka que me ha impresionado mas es la checa Milada Subrtova ,pero esta otra cantante-totalmente desconocida para mi- no tiene nada que envidiarle en sentimiento y expresion.

Teresa Zylis-Gara(1935)indeed needs more attention in the west. Her Rusalka is beautiful

We don't live in a vacuum; the low caliber of operatic singing in general has caused me to lose - at least temporarily - some of my artistic sensibility. Case in point: This is a voice that can fill the complete arch of these phrases. She as the voice AND the technique to just get through this aria in a honest way; when someone does, it feels revelatory even if the interpretation is not on the Callas level. Is it revelatory or just gorgeous and well sung?
For example, I generaly prefer sweet, but strong full lyric soprano, or lirico-spinto, than a hysteric-dramatic one... I prefer Mme Zylis-Gara then for example Angela Gheorghiu.
Callas is Callas, I love her, there's no doubt. But generally, voices like this are my favourite ones.
I'm with you on A. Gheorghiu - and I like your term: hysteric-dramatic, and will borrow it with full credits, if I can figure out how to say your name :-). Since voices/techniques like Zylis-Gara are rare, they are my favorite kind of voice as well!
@johndlabella Dear you . None could do this better than Teresa. This is not an aria for Callas. I am a big Callas lover, but in this case I can say that Teresa Zylis-Gara is the best Rusalka I ever heard.
In Poland her admirators are many, and we will always remember of Her. It's a shame anyway that nobody of those "great people", politicians, seems to remember that She is still with us...
@woytynowska Not just in Poland. She was dearly, dearly loved in America, particularly in NY at the MET where she sang all the big Mozart, Verdi and Puccini roles in the 60's 70's. The best Donna Elvira, and one of the best Desdemonas, Toscas and Trovatore Leonoras I ever heard. She also sang a stunning Tannhäuser Elisabeth in the early 70's. She and her great countrywoman the "other" Theresa (Kubiak) were two of the pillars of the spinto rep. at the MET.
A wonderful rendition by Teresa Zylis-Gara. Perhaps not the most remembered soprano today. But, in the opinion of no less a judge than Zinka Milanov, she was one of the best sopranos of the 1970s.
Bellisima, una Rusalka de sólida voz

This soprano is the perfect voice for Rusalka like Benackowa ...
Fleming has been at her beginning also very good as Rusalka - today she darkens to much ...

A marvellous voice.Have you listen to her in
Morro, ma prima in grazia? where you really can hear her fantastic skill in treating her voice and what pianissimos. Extra ordinary.

absolutely the best one. With a splendid pronounciation. What I am missing is a little bit of dramatic emotion and sensibility in her voice.
It became sometimes too perfect.

saw her from the front row at a gala in new york around 76 i think, what a treat. thanks
