Just found one of these partially dead inside a load of laundry I took out of the washer. I think it went for a ride in the washer. Holy shit at the fangs.
This summer I sprayed my basement and found more than a dozen of these spiders dead. I looked them up and found out that they primarily hunt beetles. which is the reason I sprayed my basement, had a shit load of different beetles in my area and they somehow got into my basement (most likely the sewer). So where the prey was, was the hunter (Woodlouse spider). It says their bite is painful due to the large mandibles and large fangs needed to pierce a beetles shell. Large for their size.
I know this video is old, but thanks for posting it on here. I found one that was hanging out close to our garage door and was curious about it's purpose and bite in terms of toxicity to humans. Caught & released the little guy after some google searches to find out the exact name of it.
i seen one of these spiders today it was bright red and it looked like it had a bean on its back i have never seen one of these in my life neither had anyone else that seen it
the only spiders i have ever seen my whole life living in the uk are common house spiders
NOTE: I just started to notice these around the basement about 3 weeks ago I live north of Cincinnati,Ohio. 3 so far. The following are facts to ?s' most asked. Does it hurt when they bite?., FUCK YA IT HURTS LIKE HELL..If I poke at it with a stick will it attack?..FUCK YA IT WILL...If I kill one will the other WOODLOUSE spiders form a hunting party and seek me out for revenge?.. IT WOULD NOT SURPRISE ME IF THEY DID..In other words if you see one dont fuck with it-KILL IT!
@hoponmyrig no, don't kill it, just try to put them outside, if you kill them woodlouse population would boomand no-one likes woodlice to eat all the wood they can find
I found one jus now in my room. Rather scared because of the red colouring! (not a fan of spiders :C ) Crawled out of a small vent in my room, and dropped onto my pillow! D:
I keep seeing these in my house and in the garden once.when we opened up an old capret that was thrown out ...I didn't fancy touching any of them as they look a bit mean...I bet they can still give U a good bite though??
@patrick1wtf ha yea you can keep them i have 3, my dad threw out one, but ya this month is one of the best months to find trhem, simply lift up some logs, or rocks around a yard full of woodlice, and you can get one, becareful tho because they are fast lol
@DBelgian dude u have a miss understanding they are posines but they are only equpit with a very weak venom that can cause pain and iritation to who ever is bitten and it can be worse for those alergic to the bite (commonly people alergic to bees)
such icky looking spiders. Found one in my shower this afternoon...met with a nasty death...well at least it fared better then the one who got the can of spider killing spray. I see them often enough in my house. Prop to you for having them as pets.
Damn that thing is massive. I have caught two in my basement and killed them because they freaked me out. But after doing a bit of study I think I'll just direct them outside.
I still can't get over how fucking huge their fangs are. Well, if that's what it takes to pierce a wood lice, more power to them.
if you would kill all woodlousespiders there would be crawling woodlice everywhere and they would be eating very slowly all wood (they don't check first if there's someone living in or near of their buffet
lol how about i kill them if they are really big yours loooks massive! im quite scared of spiders you see and that just looks terrifying because u cnt squash it oherwise juice would go everywhere i would have to catch it thn be in a mental institue rocking for a fe years
i see these things all the fcking TIME! They are so gross. Fast and fat and disgusting. I really wish they didn't live in such high altitude. (Colorado)
Woke up a couple days ago with a large, itchy red bump on the back of my right calf. This morning I woke up , looking at the ceiling, and saw one of these suckers in the corner of the ceiling. Very dark red with grossly bulbous rear section. Waking up and seeing this guy first thing in the AM was unsettling, and I think I was sharing my bed with him the night before, thus the bite. It was nearly an inch long, not counting the legs. Basement apartment in a house in denver, CO.
I love these beautiful spiders, they seem to fascinate me more than any other spider in the world, with only one of the specie in North America but with several different ones all over the world. I was observing two of them today actually, an adult male and a female a few weeks old
nice spider. i found a big one of these under a log and it looked like it could pack a bite! do you have any experience's with being bitten by one of these? if so how bad was it?

i love Tarantulas and spiders! I know everything there is to know aboyt them!! the woodlouse spider, is my top favorite spider! I remember catching HUGE ones, and buying crickets at the store, and nail long fangs attack! thanks for posting!
P.s. I've been reading some of these comments and my god. I understand that they are an important part of our ecosystem and perform a variety of very useful functions including keeping other pests away. HOWEVER I am being bitten to hell in my sleep. If a human scarred me with something sharp, they'd go to jail. Since I can't keep spiders away from me in the same way surely killing them is the only option. Unless someone else knows how to get them out my flat and keep them out?
be aboslutely sure you don't have woodlice in your flat, these spiders only hunt on woodlice in overpopulated areas (overpopulated with woodlice), i have seen a woodlouse spider, in her "cell" (coccoon) just in a kolony of woodlice, in places with few woodlice, there was no spider, t rince the bites very good (look for mosquito's) and if you see a spider, push them into an empty glass (they are not real good climbers) and put something above it, the next day you can release them
I live in Scotland in the UK. I have hated spiders since I can remember. I just found this at 11:45 at night going along my bedside table! I have been waking up with strange bites for weeks. I'd say their bite is painful, judging by the size of their fangs. I picked one up yesterday in my yard, and it tried desperately to bite through my glove, i could also see venom comming out.
possibly under a stone somewhere in your lawn, the stone will be warmed by the sun (this could also be a piece of wood) with many woodlice in its naighboorhood

these spiders are not pets i have pictures of their coccoon (also called "cel") but i won't show them to you, animals don't have to suffer for human amusement!
i agree! i have a, well used to have a picture. Today i was looking for them in my grandmothers backyard and when I lifted up the stone i accidentally tore the cocoon. I was so upset that i had, it wasn't my intention. the woodlouce spider I found there was an adult male, but i also found a young female. she was so beautiful.
aboslutely not, the only itch you get is the the for us harmless poison is injected under the skin, you'll need to wash the wounds when you get bitten
i found on in my bathroom yestarday! it was under my sink on the wood floor! so i put a glass over it and then i left it for a day i then went back yestarday and i tried to put some card under it so i can take it outside. but it got free and its some were in my house! what shal i do?
just wait untill you see her again, don't try to take them up with your hands, they aren't harmful, the bite is supposed to hurt a little, but isn't that everytime we get something in our skin?, she eats woodlice so maybe, check your wood floor?
I found one of these crawling across my bedroom floor at 3am the other night. It was captured, and removed from the house the following morning. I don't believe in killing spiders, because I don't think it's fair to kill them just for being spiders. They can't help what they were born as.
Just found one in the garage, the first I have ever seen. Treated it with more respect than I usually give other spiders! Re. the video (20ish secs), I didn't know woodlice could move as fast as that!
Thank you so much for sharing your footage of this spider! I found one crawling along my piano yesterday and had never seen one. To me, it looks green and purple! Thanks to your video I did not misidentify it as a brown recluse and destroy it, instead I let it go outside. The spider thanks you, too!
I just smashed one of these 5 minutes ago in my house, on my bedroom floor. I didn't used to have issues with spiders in the past, but I had a weird reaction to the bite of one that nearly killed me- it set off an autoimmune cascade that nearly wiped out my bone marrow. I only like daddy long legs, cellar spiders, and tarantulas now. Anything else gets smashed if it's in the house.
I remember unearthing one of these with with a weedwacker one time in my backyard. When I saw the size of the chelicerae on it, I thought I was doomed.
that's a pity, but i would check my house/room if i was you because where the woodlouse spider is, woodlice will be near, the spider is a kind of sheperd of the woodlice
All spiders make poison... but this one's venom is considered harmless. However, with just about anything an individual CAN react differently from the norm.
My grandmother and I found one of these in the garden a while ago and placed it into a jam jar, with 2 layers of clingfilm over the mouth, pierced witha very small needle.
We left it on the side board, came back 2 minutes later and it had managed to push through the clingfilm and escape. Not only do these bite but they are strong...
I went to open a package yesterday and one of these little blighters must have been hanging on to it and dropped out onto my hand. Gave me the shock of my life! xP
DBelgian, i was looking for a woodlouse spider today under this log but i had no luck, although there was loads of woodlouse and loads of spider silk and holes in the log, is that a sign of a woodlouse spider? i reall want to catch 1!, where did u find yours??
if you place a tile or something, in your yard, in the sun, preferably close to woodlice places, you will find one (after a while), i first met one like that, i tought it was a very dangerous spider, and then went to search on INet
Living in the UK we don't have many dangerous animals (apart from chavs, politicians and terrorists).
But thanks to global warming these little shits have spread from the warmer climes of South West England and now they're all over the place. They can't actually hurt you as the venom's not applicable to humans but they CAN bite. They're also prone to sudden bouts of aggression and don't be too surprised when one of them runs up to you and gives you a nip. Then kill it.
omfg!!!!!! ive seen this spider before it had huge ass fangs like seriously the biggest ive ever seen a spider have but i fed it to a wolf spider or funnel spider because it almost bit me and that pissed me off so i wanted to teach it a lesson not to crawl on me mwa ha ha ha
Where i used to live I found a nest of these under my window sill, There were coming into my house so i Burned them all, im not afraid of spiders at all but i dont like the look of these chaps
UG i found one of these on the kitchen floor couple months ago... took photos of it and stuck it outside in spider catcher.. it's really gruesome and im terrified of spiders!
Cool video. I caught one of these tonight and was doing some research on what the hell this scary thing is... Glad it's not a recluse, but also wish this thing had not been in my house.
I think this is one of the most sinister looking spiders on the planet. I was bitten by one about a year ago (similar in size to this) when i picked up a slab leaning against a wall. its was a real nasty pinch! itched and stung for couple of days after....
that's the reason why i posted this, so people see the jaws/fangs and know not to pick them up, for their safety (and because we need woodlouse spiders, to clean the woodlice :)
well said i have a few of them i keep as pets they are real aggressive, and will not back down aggainst anything. have a nasty bite, amaizing spiders tho, for somthing so small they are encredibly strong. glad u put them on here have a look at mine if u can
Loads of these around in the uk don't tend to enter houses to often though.

All spiders make poison... but this one's venom is considered harmless. However, with just about anything an individual CAN react differently from the norm.

the bite will hurt, no question about that but it is not poisonous

My grandmother and I found one of these in the garden a while ago and placed it into a jam jar, with 2 layers of clingfilm over the mouth, pierced witha very small needle.
We left it on the side board, came back 2 minutes later and it had managed to push through the clingfilm and escape. Not only do these bite but they are strong...

I used to keep them as pets, until one of them escaped! i let the other one out into the wilderness.

I went to open a package yesterday and one of these little blighters must have been hanging on to it and dropped out onto my hand. Gave me the shock of my life! xP

I just caught it in a cup before it made itself a home in my bedroom and put it in the compost heap.

Then kill it.

it has nothing to do with global warming, it is an european species as you can see on the map on wikipedia about the woodlouse spider

Thanks, I'll check.

Cool video. I caught one of these tonight and was doing some research on what the hell this scary thing is... Glad it's not a recluse, but also wish this thing had not been in my house.

I think this is one of the most sinister looking spiders on the planet. I was bitten by one about a year ago (similar in size to this) when i picked up a slab leaning against a wall. its was a real nasty pinch! itched and stung for couple of days after....
nenhyandai 4 years ago
that's the reason why i posted this, so people see the jaws/fangs and know not to pick them up, for their safety (and because we need woodlouse spiders, to clean the woodlice :)
