Good to know there's still some genuine soul music that doesn't involve rapping or sampling or talking about killing people or whatever other cliches lol...this guy is the bomb!
Guys, for clarity, this is not Jazz. Rapha is considered as a launcher of the Nu Soul. From his first projects till now. The whole album The Way I See It is aswell considered as Nu Soul, and Nu Soul is a movement resulted from R&B and Soul with additions of Jazz. I hope it might be clear now for you guys.
I hope music is all about cycles as some say and we can eventually come back to this. That dance crap rnb has become really sounds like shit, is like literally, they sold their 'soul'
@LProds Yeah I can definitely see the masses getting sick of the dance music...much like the hair bands of the 80s ha. It just becomes too much and people need something more simpler.
This dude is 45? I would honestly have guessed him to be around 25 years old.
Not that it matters, soul is timeless. I'm just glad that this dude has some mainstream success, I hope this takes over the R&B we have on the radio nowadays.
@ArowanaVV HAha yeah, my bro asked me how old does he look i guess like 22 lol but truth be told the majority of black people age well..its the truth!
Oh man my friend just showed me this over facebook. I never would have listened to this kind of music before, not sure why. But this is effing great. xD Funny how the same friend showed me another music video just the other day, same thing again, music I never thought I would have liked, but ended up loving. :P
The songs that I'm dancing to on my channel are not about anyone's favorite or what's popular ...they are only about what I was in the mood to dance to.. songs that I like.. so just enjoy!
God, I hate all these ads on YouTube that play before the videos. I realize that they have to pay the bills, but COME ON. I've also noticed that some of the ads are in Spanish. What the fuck's up with THAT?
I never heard of this artist until recently . I like the sound , kinda reminds me of 60's Motown . No question that this is a very talented performer .
This is the first new artist I've heard in over a decade that seems to have a clue on how to write a good song. Some of his songs deserve better lyrics though. But overall I'm impressed. It's been a long time since a new artist caught my attention.
@eliassailor he's not a new artist by far He's been out since the early 90 with a group called TONI TONY TONI, and he was also a part of a group that was made up of Dawn Robinson from Envogue, and the DJ from another group called a Tribe Call Quest. He's had a few solo cd before this.
@dabodyrobinson Yeah I figured that out the other day. I remember his old group. Wasn't a big fan. But I do like his new stuff. He looks so damn young I just assumed he was new.
I like the pre Vevo count. Hey Vevo, I found this without you. In fact, if you're so goddamn great, why is every video to the right by Jeniifer Hudson? And who the hell is Jennifer Hudson, anyway? (sorry, I'm not hip).
@93Bigbrown Raphael Saadiq's voice makes current popular male singers, such as Chris Brown, Jason Derulo, and yes, Bruno Mars, sound like crapulous amateurs. Actually, Saadiq has a song {Stone Rollin'} on VH1's list of Top 20 videos, which surprises the shit outta me, cuz most of their listeners have such terrible taste in music. This guy's backup band is totally fucking awesome, too! To me, his music resembles that of one of my faves, Marvin Gaye. Fabulous talent!
It sounds great! I wish it wasn't a rip-off of "Goin' to the Go-Go" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, because I want pop music to go in this direction.
NPR just put up a full stream of the entire new Raphael Saadiq record on First Listen!! “Stone Rollin’” is such a great record and it has gotten tons of great reviews. They loved it, I do too—you should check it out.
@sydneyandersonband i love it Syd...i just downloaded it from amazon and im gonna shuffle it with some other hot joints and just stay in bliss with real music.
@ReviewswithJake1 Rapael Saadiq is pretty mainstream. But honestly, who even gives a shit anymore. That word is practically meaningless at this point.
@ReviewswithJake1 i catogrise this as being mainstream shite and trust me i know what i am talking about. i benchmark a song against Greg Perry=Come on Down and Heatwave -Star of a story. listen to both and then tell me if you still think this is better. no way is it better. i could write a better piece of music than this within a day.
Sorry, but I just don't understand what's so great about his music. We've all heard this sound before, and there's nothing profound or moving about his lyrics.
@wuwei87 I see where you're coming from, but the guy never set out to do something that no artist had ever done before. His style purposely pays homage to a past era and lots of people missed that.
@wuwei87 If that's true, there's nothing profound or moving about most other artists of today's R&B either. We've been bombarded by all these over produced, over sampled preselected hip hop/ R&B acts that when someone comes along with something like this we love it. Even if it is a throwback to a long gone era. It's like we've been feeding on junk food for the longest, and then here comes Raphael with this home cooked meal handed down from grandma's recipes and everybody's at the table. Yum!
