Google Image Search the term: "rainbow at sea". Heimdallr who is related to the Bifrost is said to be of nine mothers (nine waves). It seems to relate directly to the ocean. We know that thor strides beside it in the ocean, and cannot walk on the bifrost. maybe because it requires sun shine which is not available during a storm. Rainbows are possible without rain, in particularly misty ocean scenes.
Well the shimmering part makes me think of the northern lights, because they like shimmer and stuff and they like move around
The milky way part comes from (cant remember where i heard it) someone who said Snorri may have turned the milky way into a rainbow because it was easier to understand, but i dont know :D
@GermanicHeathen Yup! The word "bíf" is derived from "bífa" =to shiver, tremble, vibrate. "röst" could mean "voice" (given the importance of uttering sounds with voice in Norse mythical names, I think it is a good choice) although it could also have to do with "strife". It is known to be pictured as a rainbow bridge, which may be why the name is paraphrased into things like "shimmering way" instead of applying more literal translations. Another name is Bil-röst ("bil"=swift moment)
@LadyoftheLabyrinth what do you think about the northern lights being bifrost to the ancestors instead of actual rainbows? or possibly even the milky way?
@GermanicHeathen I think it is possible, but there is no hard evidence. I think perhaps that the physical aspect of the Shivering Voice is less important than its essential nature, its energy...a matter of energy and vibration.
@Djinnmeister Thanks. The title to come is "The Seed of Yggdrasill". The title that has been published before is "The Maiden with the Mead - a Goddess of Initiation Rituals in Old Norse Mythology?" The original thesis that the book made from is also available for free online, there is a link to it on my channel.
I enjoyed this very much and looking forward to every next one.
Downloading a video can be quite a challenge here, so yours are now about the only ones I have seen lately. Very much worth the effort every time. Thank you sister
It is important to remember here that the Lord of Thunder represents man in this poem, and that this is an allegory of the challenges of man. To fight furiously in blindness or to open his mind and unite with his original and true purpose is the challenge that Odin puts forth to him.
In those days even the poet would very well understand the pitfalls of the warrior, since he would most certainly be one himself.
Good lesson and one of my favorite myths. I cannot help but feel pity for the Lord of Thunder and cheer him onwards. At the same time, when I read the myth, I initially despise Odinn for his taunts and seemingly wicked deeds, but eventually realize that Odinn is trying in his own way to help the Son of Earth.
poor thor no time to be a poet when dulling the swords of deadly foes or wiles nor weapons avail. when your need be great . as old masters say there is the fight ,there is only the fight. if a warrior thinks of any other thought in a fight he will die. if you do not respect he who protects you thor my drop his hammer and let you pray to a new god if the norns fate it then it will be so. middle wise is best wes hael
