If you don't understabd Buddy Holly's impact on Rock, then ur lost. He was waaaayyyyyy ahead of his time....Clapton covered this with Blind Faith & it was recognition of a TRUE 'Pioneer' of Rock 'n Roll - RIP - Mr Holly (You were gone too soon, but you're NEVER forgotten). Great Upload of a lost classic!
@writerjmd Least you admit it. That's alright all generations do that, just a lack of vision due to the blindness of the individuals themselves. All passes with time, happened to almost everyone
damn i miss this guy. his late 50's shit sounded like mid 60's shit.none of it was shit im just shitfaced making a shit faced observation.
Buddy would have been bigger than Elvis. Elvis was an enteertainer buddy was an artist. artists dont make gospel albums then bite their tongue in half and die with a turd hanging out their asshole.
Buddy did more for rock and roll then elvis did. elvis was just a dipshit that loved pussy and uppers.
@wideosvatcher Although I agree Buddy Holly was by far a superior artist, particularly as a songwriter, I have to disagree on one of your points. There is no way Buddy Holly would have been bigger than Elvis. Despite the fact that he was only 22 at the time of his death, his career was already somewhat on a decline. His last top ten hit was late 1957 and he had no real hits in 1958 or 1959. Most of his signature tunes are from 1957 or earlier. He never would have approached Elvis chart wise
@zep444 Buddy was MUCH bigger than Elvis in every single aspect of music. As always, history will reveaL the truth. Many great composers of music such as Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Debussy and others had decades - or even centurys - pass by before the greatness of their musioc was truly acknowledged and appreciated.. I'm confident 100 yrars from now people will be saying "Who was Elvis?" while listening to Buddy's great tunes.
@65rock4ever I agree with your statement completely, but there is no way Buddy Holly would have ever approached the Billboard chart success that Elvis achieved. This by no means detracts from Holly's greatness, but Elvis was a hit machine. Buddy Holly loses the popularity contest, but he created music of much greater substance than Elvis and perhaps someday he will be recognized for that fact.
@zep444 Billboard Charts mean nothing. It's the quality of the music that counts. Teeny-booper sex symbols like Elvis normally do very well with commercial charts, etc... I never listen to Elvis' music because there's nothing there of any real substance. BTW, the consensus among those I've known who are really into 50's / early rock & roll is that Elvis was a sham. There's a huge difference between a showman and a real musician. Popularity rarely equals quality.
@buddynme Yes, we lived and loved, *and* were foolish kids; but still it was aligned with all our might to Buddy's rollicking *B* side. Just try to Imagine how this was ever a B-side.
...and my lifetime love *was* forever, all right....
His death was a tragic loss to American music. Imagine if he lived - writing and performing with the likes of Lennon-McCartney, Brian Wilson and a host of others? He was a true American genius. Only 22 - what would his body of work been had he lived a full life?
I still love that first wave of rock and roll. Buddy Holly, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Everly Brothers, etc. I'm a Southerner, and and all these hicks made you Yankees shut up and listen.
@palmer8112 Get reaL Airtime play and published hits does not reflect true musical merit. The same is true today. Just look at the worthless garbage that is on the radio today -- making millions for the so-called artists who produce this filfth. BTW, the British invasion bands - including The Beatles whose name was inspired by the Cricketts had several Buddy Holly songs on their albums. I can't remember any by Elvis. Elvis was a joke compared to Buddy Holly..
@palmer8112 This is like saying the Wright Brothers were inspired by watching birds to build real airplanes. Elvis was a glamour boy, but Buddy plauyed the real thing. Listen, the proof is in the music.
billicks (real name wayne by all accounts) is about 12 and comments that he likes rap music... so one of the last people you would seek out for an appraisal on Elvis and rock and roll in general...
@mrbillhicks You're a horrible cunt arn't you. Whats wrong with the name Wayne? And for the record I like all genres of music, not just rap. Which is evident by the potrait tattoos I have on my body of jim morrison, kurt cobain, bob marley & jimi hendrix....Bill Hicks would turn in his grave if he knew twats like you were using his name. Oh and Elvis was a complete talentless yanky twat.
Elvis had 16 #1 singles in a 7-year period, plus "Suspicious Minds" for one week in 1969, for a total of 79 weeks at #1. According to the RIAA, the Beatles are the record sale kings in the United States, having sold 170,000,000 units. Elvis comes in third behind Garth Brooks, with 118.5 million units. That would be The Beatles.
Worldwide the Beatles estimate from EMI in 2005 is 1.3 billion. RCA had to readjust sales figures when it was found that VP Don Wardell faked the count for Elvis at 1 billion in 1980. As of 2008 the Elvis total is between 900 million and 1 billion. In the U.S., the Beatles had 20 #1 singles, with a total of 59 weeks at #1, in a period of 7 years. At one point in 1964, they monopolised the top 5, a feat which has never been repeated.
@palmer8112 oh, so i see, elvis had a huge influence on you and your family but the beatles didn't, hmmm, interesting....don't give me that crap about drugs. elvis was a prescription drug addict in his last days not to mention a fried peanut-butter and banana sandwich addict also....here's a fact : the beatles are the best selling artist of all time.
@palmer8112 i am not taking anything away from elvis, i have stated many times that i love him and his music, but you're comparing these artist just based on 'chart hits'. now you threw the beatles into the mix, they're recording career lasted a mere 9 years, and only 7 in the states. elvis had more time to compile those said hits. how about madonna and mariah carey? are they the queens of rock and pop because of their numerous hits? lastly, no one has had the cultural impact as the beatles.
where all just so lucky to have all these great artists, the king? the greatest? who really cares, oh, before I go, think about AbbA/Boney M, are also so great, like I said, where lucky, Long live Rock n Roll.
Um, the best male singer of all time is Roy Orbison. Even Elvis acknowledged that. However, Elvis is still the king for a few reasons. Yes, we all love Buddy, and rightfully so, but even Buddy didn't want to perform for long whilst that's what Elivs was. And as voice goes, you just can't match that sort of magic that Elvis had. It was a one in a billion voice. And it just happned to be there at the right time.
Elivs's songs, imo, imo and yes imo are hardly ever great 'cept Kentucky Rain or Maries the Name of his latest flame. OK a few more but he is corny to me , almost a caricature and would never share his drugs with me .. this is personal too.
Buddy wrote his own stuff . I am just biased and there is no comparison in my mind between the two. I'll take Carl Matchbox Blue Suede shoes over Elvis. Elvis is certainly very important in the history of music because he popularized and influenced .. but there are some great black blues singers who influenced but I might like the Yardbirds and not be a racist.
@gajk041008 Buddy hands down. Elvis didn't even write his own songs (in all fairness...he did help in writing them, but it was usually someone else).
I always said that if Buddy hadn't died and Jerry Lee Louis hadn't been scandalized...then Elvis would nyo have been "king" of Rock 'n' Roll
Honestly this song proves Buddy Holly's genius. "Well Alright" without the Crickets doing the Do-Wop back vocals. This song could literally have been recorded last year.
A good thing to remember that : A Beatle was the next best thing to a Cricket

this song doesnt sound 52 years old. In my opinion a few of Buddy's tunes have awful background vocals that date the songs more than anything.
Backing vocals have their place but Buddy did not need them.
it would of been cool if HE did them.
