Feeding is part of it and genetics is the other part. I have some female ball pythons that are between 15 and 20 years old that are about 4 feet long and then others about the same age that are 5 1/2 feet long. I think that feeding is more of an art than anything else.
God she's beautiful. I'm trying to add weight to my female but the problem is that she eats like a pig but doesn't get any weight. She's 1529 grams but she came to me as a rescue and was badly underweight, so I'm hesitant to breed her unless she gains 2000 grams, or maybe I shouldn't breed her at all, considering her background. I'd like to, she's an amazing pastel with very long stripes on her neck and tail, but I don't know if I should. Can you give me any insight or advive? Thank you.
Hi there, I have a quick question for you. I currently have a baby pastel female weighing in at 130 grams, just wondering if you think it is possible to get her up to breeding weight by next season, thanks!
im planning to breed my two ball pythons but i think there too young what age or weight do they have to be and do the have to be in seperate cages cause when the in there tank which is a 40 gallon they usually near eachother looked like ther locked but he's too young forthat so what age shoud i try at
With males it's all about sexual maturity, I have a male mojave that is breeding at 350 grams, but usually see them breed at around 700 to 900 grams. The weight of Females on the other hand is a different subject. The industry standard is 1500 grams for females. The concern is that if a smaller female breeds, she might be too small to pass the eggs and then become egg bound. A snake that is egg bound can die.
Hi, I have 3 BPs, A 3 foot Spider Female, a 1.5 ft normal female, and a 1.5 ft pastel male... they are all currently in separate living areas but could any or all of them be put together? I did have the 2 babies together for about a month but then i separated them (would they be tempted to breed before breeding size as a male and female together?). Thank you.
@fgs9 Thanks, I will make a video of my snakes tonight so you can see them. THe Spider is very very nice but I'm not 100% sure on the sex... think its female but since "she" is almost adult size, i didnt try to sex her
@xxTimberland28xx either way, ill be producing (hopefully) some pastels and spiders if the spider is male (pastel male x normal female, spider male x normal female), or some bumblebees if the spider is female (spider female x male pastel).. hoping it is a "she"
I have a 42" male ball python whos 1.5yrs old, would it be safe to get another ball python preferably a baby and keep them in the same tank. Its a 40 gal tank. More worried about if they would get along
@matter983patter I bought her from a family that had her posted on Craigslist, she was 10 years old when I picked her up. I've had her for about 10 years, so that makes her around 20 years old now. When I got her she weighed around 3000 grams and very thin, she was about 5 feet long. Over the last 10 years she has grown about 6 inches and has gained about 2000 grams.
@fgs9 I plan on buying a male Ball Python somewhen in 2 weeks time. I've looked online and done all my research, but lot's of sites say females grow to a max length of 4.25ft but obviously looking at this video that's by far incorrect. I was just wondering how big would you guess (or if you know) male Ball Pythons max length?
If everyone commenting would do research and read articles and surf the web they could answer all of their own questions. Normally ball pythons do not reach this size, as Brian was saying in his video he believes the trait to be genetic because her babies are born big. Gorgeous girl though, I have a 3000 gram normal as well who I thought was a monster, your girl gives the name a new meaning. How old is she?
I really don't know. I do have several female ball pythons that are over 4000 grams and most of them are at around 20 years old. Most of them cosistantly have 10 plus egg clutches.
Hey, my baby ball python hasn't had a proper meal in 5/6weeks! I brought her to the vet and he fed her some baby food but I'm starting to worry. I really don't know what else to do I've tried almost everything but live because nowhere around me sells live hoppers. Any help would be appreciated.
I have found that most of my snake's growth can happen during the first 2 years. It is not uncommon for my 1 year olds to reach a length of 28 inches or 100 grams per month. Growth is generated by 2 factors, genetics and amount of food eaten. Sounds like both are working in your favor.
Though I don't remember the question I had, I have had great luck. What I found that works really good for frozen thawed is to heat up the head with really hot tap water just before offering. And ofcourse if the snake is bluing over the eyes, not to bother the snake for awhile 'til it's done with the molt/shed. Can my 4ft ball live well in a 20 size tank?
I've never heard of a ball python growing 17 inches in 2 1/2 months, you have a very special snake there. I have no idea why your snake is growing so fast.
I had a question I have a male ball. I had gotten him when he was only 25 inches, and I've only had him for 2 1/2 months and he's now 37 inches. Why would he be growing this fast I have two others and they are normal size at 3 1/2 and 4 feet at 4 years old.
I've had this snake for about 12 years. I purchased it from Craigslist. The snake was about 10 years old when I got it. It was about the same length and weighed about 3500 grams. It was very skinny when I got it. I have several others that are in the 4000 to 4500 range, but this one is the biggest one I own. I think this particular female is genetically engineered to be large, she is an exception to the rule.
@fgs9 i got my female i had here since birth and is two years old but is 4 feet long and 2000 grams... is she gunna get much bigger or is this pretty much it? thanks
@fgs9 that's awesome i didn't know they could even get that large. I always took them for smaller pythons. This is great! You only feed her once every two weeks?
gorgeous creature!!! Very large! I'd love to get my girl up to roughly this size. She's about 2 years old, and is about 400 grams. Feeding on rat pups every 5 days atm. About how long do you think it'd take to get her up to 1500-200 grams?
@fgs9 Thanks for your reply, Brian. I do appreciate it. I assume if I gradually increase her portions as she grows (larger prey, or more meals of smaller prey), he growth rate would be somewhat faster?
@fgs9 why are u feeding with rat pups to a 400g 2years old snake. sounds like ur underfeeding it. one of my girls gained 250 g in 4 weeks eating rats once a week roughly(she skipped a meal while shreeting). from 950 to around 1200.
Hey Brian, this is probably one of those Sub-Sahara Ball Python's correct? I hear that for what ever reason they get huge and can produce 12-18 egg clutches.On one hand its awesome because you could breed a Champ or the likes and have incredible odds, on the other your changing the genetical make-up of your common ball python while also bringing down the market value alot faster of what ever you breed to her with huge clutches.... I dunno what do you think?
I have no idea where she cam from. I bought her off of Craigslist around 15 years ago. She was already at 3500 when I bought her and she was real thin. It is not uncommon for me to get 10 and 11 egg clutches from some of my ball pythons. Females this large are very rare. I don't think that your going to change the market value of ball pythons because there are a few ball pythons that can lay larger clutches that others.
I need some advice. We just adopted a 3 1/2 to 4 ft ball python about a month ago. The person who was fostering her, fed her one mouse in the 3 weeks she had her. Then we got her, wouldn't take f/t mouse, wk later we gently forced fed. Tried a live small rat, no luck. Killed it, no luck. She's now pinking on belly thou eyes not blue yet. What next?
After your snake sheds, place it into a hide box along with the type of rodent she has been eating before. Tape up the the opening of the hide box so that the rodent and snake are locked inside. Leave them together inside of the hide box for around 10 minutes. If the snake does not eat the rodent, repeat in 3 days.
Feel free to call me at 408-981-6694 if you have anymore questions.
@fgs9 Thank you so much for the quick response ; ) Do I need to worry about the snake getting bit or scratched by the rodent, in this case I guess would be a mouse?
@aspenedgewalker When you place a live rodent into your snake's cage there is always a chance that your snake might get bitten. The reason I say to leave the snake and rodent together for 10 minutes is because if the snake hasn't eaten the mouse or rat in 10 minutes, then it's best for the snake to remove it. It is not uncommon for a rodent to bite chunks out of a snake if they stay confined for too long. The concern is that if the rodent gets hungry it might try eating the snake.
@fgs9 Thank you for the info. One hears of many techniques and I'm sort of gathering it all. Our ball is definitely cloudy blue in the eyes and has a bit of flaking around her nose. I misted her with some water to aid in the shedding. Here in Colorado, it gets quite dry in the fall/winter.
Thank goodness. My husband is already afraid that the damn baby snake is going to eat him. If it gets that big, I'll be looking for a new place to live!
Hey Brian, I have a 1300 gram female who always stays in her water dish. literly all the time. Atfirst I thought she might have mites but I looked and didnt see any. Do you know what might be wrong?
Don't get too worried if your ball pythons stops eating. it is very common for them to fast.
Contiue to offer your snake food even though it's not eating. The problem is that you might not know if the snake is sick or not. When in doubt take it to a vet that specialzes in reptiles.
If a ball python shedded incorrectly and left patches of skin down it's back,but nowhere else,if it were to shed correctly next time,would the skin from the old shed come off aswell as the skin from the new shed?
If your snake had problems shedding last time, unless something is changed to increase the amount of humidity, then the same thing will probably happen.
@fgs9 Okay then.I have got a idea as to how to increase the humidity so the snake should be fine on the next shed.I am also taking what I deem as 'all necassary precautions.'
I have a question: I have a year old female ball and I eventually want to breed her to my friend's spider male but I can tell what color she is. What is a good way to tell what color she is?
Hey Brian, you got some nice,big snakes i really like em! I looked at your website and i didnt find anything available as in a female Boa. I have a male het for albino red tail id like to breed. Any idea when anything will be up for grabs? Please respond.... thx!
I had a 9 year old female normal royal who was 6132grams and 5ft 8 inches long! She died last year of egg binding amazingly, I never knew she was a giant until I looked up everyone elses
that is one huge healthy specimen you have there, is she just a normal breed (colour morph)? and what sort of size rats do you feed her and how often?

Feel free to call me at 408-981-6694 if you have anymore questions.
Good luck

@fgs9 Thank you so much for the quick response ; ) Do I need to worry about the snake getting bit or scratched by the rodent, in this case I guess would be a mouse?
aspenedgewalker 3 months ago

@aspenedgewalker and anyone else having trouble feeding BP's
I used to own a BP which also refused to eat. The trick which worked for me:
- Put to rodent in a bucket roughly 1 foot/30 cm high
- Take out the snake from its enclosure (don't forget to wash your hands!)
- Hold the snake gently above the bucket at a close distance so the snake can see nothing else but the rodent.
- Being an ambush predator it should now have the urge to strike
Good luck.

How do I achieve humidity in the tank? How much is too much? And how do I measure it? Finally what age should humidity be applied?
spannzer115 4 months ago
@spannzer115
I never consider humidity an issue, but if you want to increase it place the water bowl on the warm side of the cage.

Do most ball pythons in captivity grow this large?
JenniferChapman1413 4 months ago
@JenniferChapman1413
I think most ball pythons don't grow this large, it's all about genetics.

Hey Brian, I have a 1300 gram female who always stays in her water dish. literly all the time. Atfirst I thought she might have mites but I looked and didnt see any. Do you know what might be wrong?
ilovelockerz7652 4 months ago
@ilovelockerz7652
I wouldn't think that there is anything wrong at all. It may be that she just loves the water.

What do you do if ur ball python stops eating, I'm getting one soon so I'm curious. Love the vid btw, she's a beauty!!
spannzer115 4 months ago
@spannzer115
Don't get too worried if your ball pythons stops eating. it is very common for them to fast.
Contiue to offer your snake food even though it's not eating. The problem is that you might not know if the snake is sick or not. When in doubt take it to a vet that specialzes in reptiles.
Good luck

If a ball python shedded incorrectly and left patches of skin down it's back,but nowhere else,if it were to shed correctly next time,would the skin from the old shed come off aswell as the skin from the new shed?
newkey0010 4 months ago
@newkey0010
If your snake had problems shedding last time, unless something is changed to increase the amount of humidity, then the same thing will probably happen.
Brian / FGS
fgs9 4 months ago
@fgs9 Okay then.I have got a idea as to how to increase the humidity so the snake should be fine on the next shed.I am also taking what I deem as 'all necassary precautions.'

Almost all animals belong in the wild where they naturally should be; it has been their home for millions of years.
