No, this isn't in Chiang Mai. I'll clarify something first -- this is not technically Loy Kratong. This northern holiday is called Yi Peng and it just happens to fall at the same time period. So, you can see them release lanterns all over the CM area, but the place I went to here (and I recommend it because it's the biggest I've seen!) is in the San Sai district near Maejo University. Just bring that information to a tourist agent or those big red truck/taxis and they can get you there.
So this is not actually in Chiang Mai? I'm planning a trip this year to see this festival - what's the best place to see and partake in the lanterns? Any advice?
@OoMASEoO well, most that are produced are biodegradable and flame retardant nowadays. they are indeed a fire hazard. But so are fireworks. if done in a controlled manner, such as releasing over open water (like from boats), or in open areas nowhere near farmland or forests, it's okay.
I was there at this exact time and place, I missed this lantern display, I think I was in a restaurant, waiting for my food...waiting and waiting, that is another story all together!!! I did watch monks lite lanterns later. I wonder how it looked from a satellite perspective???

The next day at the hospital the burns ward festival was briliant. Colorful skin graft awards and the streacher races were highlights I will never forget. The fire departments even showed up to put the hospital out !
I live in Chiang Mai. This is Loy Kratong in November. These lanterns are really a N.Thailand (Lanna) tradition but now it has spread across the country. This is once a year but they do let them off on western new year now as well. They are sky lanterns made from bamboo and rice paper, light the wax fuel cell then let them drift into the air, they go to 1000's ft. Some also have fireworks on the underside of the lantern. The bit at the end of video is one of the fireworks attached has fallen off.
I did one on Chaweng, Samui. You make a wish and set it free. If falls within your sight it is bad luck. Once I hit one with a firework on accident. I wonder who gets the bad luck in the situation?
i think i will cry when i see this directly with my own eyes

@hitmenrev Yes, they did. That was the only thing I was sketched about it. As well as the dripping wax from the sky.

This festival will be set on every full moon day in November
Position is near Mae Jo University, 20 km. north from Chiangmai downtown.
Don't worry, civil aviation authority would clear the sky especially for this. All flight to/from CNX will be postponed.

Loy Kratong varies because it's on the lunar calendar. You can google and find out the dates. The location is outside Chiang Mai-- yee ping, maybe?
