I had an inkling as to the type and amount of experience Steve Novosel has, and I guess I chose correctly when searching for an upright instructor...Steve is amazing!
@fullzodiac well that's your problem there, Tal Farlow is a guitar player, not a woodsman, you should probably stay out of the woodshed and start playing guitar.
Tal was one of sweetest men I ever met and one of the truly original greats on guitar. It just came to him "naturally". He is one of the few with an unmistakeable style: you hear two bars and you know it's Tal! To those who criticize his technique, I say, "Let me hear you play!"
Tal Farlow knows his guitar very well; in his playing no limitation he shows. Improvisation he has mastered. Few guitar players out there master the improvisation' skill. That's why they play the melody six to seven times and close up the tune after all.
He was a guitarisr before he became a sign painter....he seemed to have had problems with severe depression too. Helluv guitar player and he seemed to be a pretty nice guy.
Red Norvo consistently blows me away. He may be my favorite vibes player of all time, with the possible exception of Steve Nelson (that's a stylistic toss-up). Thanks for the great vid.
I think Tal turned the volume down all the way on his guitar when he played rhythm behind other musicians. that's where that acoustic sound comes from. it also sounds like a drummer playing with brushes which makes sense because he hardly ever played with a drummer. the only one missing here from the original lineup is Charles mingus.
I follow but on here his volume control is not going all the way down, Tone maintains too much roundness and these guitars aren't acoustically that fat like say a Johnny Smith model with suspended pickup. But many studio jazz guitars are recorded with mic positioned near the guitar.
This is the best thing i ever heard! I thought the original he did on A Sign Of the times was it, but know now i understand wich sick cindes of music it is that playd Jazz like Tal Farlow! Oh My God!
Three guys who loved what they were doing and it shows!

Yes, not bad for an oldtimer, also when you bear in mind that his hearing became impaired in these years. Wonderful Farlow, by the way.
