There is a whole wave of road riders (some who have been around a long time and have no excuse) leisure riders ( the ones especially who have triple chainsets and do rides like the manchester to blackpool in England) and newbies who think cycling began with Lance fucking Armstrong. Maitre Jacques was the joint biggest legend of them all in tandem with eddy and the badger. These puffs today going on about carbon this and shaving 5 grams off that are a joke. Anquetil had the heart of ten men
Anquetil was so off the Richter Scale, simply incomparable. Many supposed "in the know" cyclists, especially the compact frame - Shimano poseurs of today have no idea as to the ungodly event that was the Grand Prix des Nations.
While there have been many exceptional cyclists throughout time and I could mention a number, but space would not allow, Anquetil was simply beyond words, unparalleled.
Whenever I hear certain current names being bandied, I laugh.
A little known 'Great Moment' in sports. Anquetil rode with more ease and had more panache than any other cycling champion. Jacques was one of my three childhood heros - Anquetil in cycling, Gene Krupa in drumming and Aron Nimzovitch in chess.
this rates right up there with Bradman's 334 in a day,Secretariat 1973 Belmont stakes,Ali's thriller in Manila victory, don larsen's shut out in 1956 world series, reggie jacksons 4 homer's in a world series game 1977,Michael jordan's 50 point game, bob beamon's 1968 long jump for the greatest athletic performance of the 20th century.
Great champion, fantastic and epic performance. His position and style on the bike were unique. But as he said you must be crazy to believe that certain results and extraordinary performances can be maid without some aid. And this is true
truly one of the most incredible feats in cycling history amphetamines or no amphetamines 34 hours without sleep and 500 miles of racing i really would like to see some super star cyclist attempt what he did that now and win at that ! truly amazing . JACQUES ANQUETIL LEGEND....

It was brave but crazy, Anquetil didn't win the Tour that year or ever again.
At 53 he was dead. RIP Jaques.
