The language orthography reform in Turkey was needed. What ended up being done though was really bad. Ottoman turkish was a language of literature much like arabic and persian, fine tuned over centuries. It has borrowed a lot vocabulary from arabic, persian, but it has also given vocabulary to those countries.

Actually, the Turkish language does not fit the Arabic alphabet. Turkish has more vowls than the European languages, Arabic has less. Writing Turkish language in Arabic would have been impossible for peasans, hence why illiteracy was excessively high at times of the Arab alphabet, and improved considerably over the 20th century. Latin alphabet fits the Turkish language better according to Orientalist and Turkology professors of every nationality.

So it meant: power to the Turkish people to READ

I believe that the arabic script could have been reformed to suit turkish very well. It is sad that Ataturk took the extreme step of switching to latin. Latin script for turkish is full of dots, diacritics which actually make latin script more ugly (e.g. compared to english orthography).

Turkey lost continuity with their great historical heritage. If they reformed the arabic script rather than abandon they would have been more in touch with their ottoman history and achievements.
