thanks for your help dude. im trying to get skinny this year because im trying to be fit for highschool. all of your videos are helping me, ive lost 10 lbs :)
I'm of the opinion that brisk walking is best for weight control and minimal injury. Unlike running and jogging especially if your carrying extra weight, or if your an older person or as you get older the pounding that running and jogging do to your joints could cause injuries and then you would be out weeks if not months. Just a thought!
Steve, I have started to walk more now because after doing interval training my legs started hurting very badly. I did loose about 20 lbs in 2 months about a year and half ago and I could not run for the next month. What do you think about this? I still will loose weight right? I say this because I do NOT always go up to my max heart rate while walking. Thanks.
Great advice man quick question for you..I'm looking for a device that can accurately count how many calories I've burned during my workouts I can't really find one that's accurate or works properly any help would b appreciated thanx
Hi, I'm doing Tae Bo Cardio for one hour for 5-6 days in a week and I've changed my diet completely as I'm eating more healthier but I lose only half a pound per week. Should I start walking and jogging to burn more calories? Thanks
@Janasheen91 YES! Tae Bo or aerobics in an aerobic room are not that effective at burning calories because you're not using your legs fully and consistently like you do when you walk or job.
Hey steve, I had to take 2 months off cardio and now i'm ready to get back into it. 2 months off has completely killed my fitness, I could barely get round my old jogging route .... not happy. How long does it take, roughly, to get back in shape?
@ODanboy Jogging doesn't burn much calories, try to use a machine, like an elliptical. those are much more effective for burning fat, trust me i know.
i have runed marathons ,,,,......and now a few years later i want to run it again....i started to run and my back started to hurt... is it beacause i am overweight???
Burned calories per minute is higher in jogging. You could walk for a longer period and burn more calories. Jogging boosts metabolism though so you might be burning calories for a longer period after you stop. Lift weights, that's my advice.
Thank you VERY much for making these videos!!!! They are great and easy to understand. P.S Do you think skipping ( Jump Rope ) Is good for weight loss??

Steve you are great! And one hell of an inspiration. I have a question for you though!? Will lifting M/W/F and doing HIIT cardio after for 20 minutes. Then on tues and thursday do my boxing workout where i hit the hell out of the bag for 1-3 min then rest 1 min, be overtraining or will it be good, plus im thinking about running on saturdays. So ill be working out 6 days a week. Is this too much?
@baseballme1t Thanks! No that's not too much as long as your receiving enough rest, gettin enough calories but not forcing food or overeating, and drinking some Gatorade (that's right - not protein shakes like everybody beleives) after your worksout to help speed recovery.

is jogging good to get rid of cellulite? I am 5'4 and about 120 pounds so yeah I am thin but I do have cellulite on my lower body, I jog pretty often and I was just wondering if it would help. thanks.
@mulafresh There is no such thng a cellulite just fat that has a dimpled look. Joggging will help get rid of fat simply because you will burn more calories. And to increase your weight loss focus on total daily calories eaten. Then do cardio on a regular basis.
@sjstrictlykings Only if you're going to be running for more than an hour. This is because the carbs in the drink helps with fat utilization. If not running for more tha an hour, water is more than enough.

I heard running a mile and walking a mile burn about the same amount of calories, walking just takes longer. The best, in my opinion, is walking sick hills- one can get their wind up without pounding the hell out of their joints. I work in San Fran and walk all the way up Jones Street past Grace Cathedral and back down to Market Street everyday. The top part is almost 45 degrees.
hey steve thanks again but i want to ask something ,i am doing 3 days weights and 3 days 1hour threadmill with about 140bpm and i am 23years old and i wanted to ask .Am i doing ok or i am over-training or under training because i want to lose 7kilos of fat in the next 3months.about my diet its 25gr protetin 30-50gr carbsper meal 5 meals a day.

@MexicanPride171 Not really. You have to be in good shape already to be able to do interval training. BUT cardio (and weight loss) become more effective the longer, more intensely and more frequently you do cardio.

I heard that they both burn the same amount of calories its just running gets you wherever you want to go faster, that is if your walking is brisk? Also if you want to do a good workout using jogging and walking how long should you do for each in intervals, say if you did 30 seconds of each for 30 minutes 5 days a week would that be good?
hey steve, i walk an average amount of 3hours non stop every day with a few extra pounds on my back, about maybe 10, do u think walking with extra weight would burn more calories?
hey i was wondering if u could tell me best ways to burn fat/calories when you have a leg injury for me i i have osgood schlatter disease in my left knee cant do much (squats, lunges, sprints ) im getting heavier ive had this about 1/2 a year now

Hey, I'm 15 and i run 15 mins everyday and 3 times a week i lift weights, now my question is: Can i better run 3 days a week for 30 mins or is it ok? on other channels they say you have to do cardio for atleast 20-30 mins to make it effective,

Hello, some weeks ago i started running for 15 minutes a day, and 3 times a week weight lifting, but i got a question now: Can i better run 3 times a week for 30 mins ? or is it good like this?
Well I have a workout for you guys that might get your heart going really well. OK first make sure you stretch really good for this. Than you start off with a 8 second sprint.....as fast as you can go. Than you take a 12 second break. After 12 seconds you start back to a 8 second sprint again. Do this 12 times so total of 4 minutes. After you get that set in you take a 1 minute break. Than you repeat 4 more sets of that. I had a very hard time getting first set done. OUT OF SHAPE lol.

I agree with that!! That's why I'm here a so often. Lots of great information and discussion to get you lean and keep you there...comfortably. I believe Steve Turano and Clarence Bass are the best Q & A bodybuilding/fitness experts in the nation.
i just want to say , i just no good at jogging , i jog for 3 mins and iam out of breath and iam no even over weight ! no i can run 30 mins none stop but it took me 4 months training 4 days a week , sometimes i ran for 6mins stoping in between then it just became easire after the first month , it took me a whole month to run 10minutes without gasping for air , but did it , no i can run 30mins fast pace ,
Really? When I first started jogging around 4 months ago, I could go 20 minutes and my muscles and back would be really tired but my heart wasn't beating that fast, and I could catch my breath fully within 5 minutes. A month later after running every day I got up to 45 minutes of non stop jogging and felt the same as I use to feel after jogging for 20 minutes.. you might be faster IDK, but I ran an average of 3.5 miles in 45 minutes, which is 4.6 MPH. I was 20 pounds over weight when i started.

Then you will consume muscle. Sicilian49 is correct as far as there is always some fat on your body. NEVERTHELESS, when bodybuilders near competition time, they are VERY vunerable...and almost always do, lose some lean muscle mass near competitiion time. The idea in the months before competition is to try to limit your fat loss to about 1/4 lb (4 oz.) per week.
nobody has zero percent bodyfat, theres a healthy minimum of like 5% for males and like 21% for females, any less than that is unhealthy and it defeats the purpose lol.
i have a question: i live in cleveland, ohio right off the lake and in the winter time, its freakin cold. ive been using my stairs to get in my cardio as opposed to running outside in the snow. how effective would you say stair climes are as opposed to running?

i run on the treadmill 3 times a week for 40 minutes at a time at 6.5 mph burning around 700 calories each time...how long at this rate will it take me to lose 20 lbs? I just started bout a month ago.
@uzavas about 12 weeks, theoretically. you burn calories throughout the day, which adds to that, probably shortening that time, and if you eat well, that will help shorten the time as well.
well the treadmill tells me im burning 700 calories also i am 37 and weigh 200 lbs. im guessing most marathon runners are around 160 lbs? im no expert but i believe this does make a difference in calories burned.

Might be a stupid question, but I work in security, and when I guard the outside I usually run around the building. It's like 1 mile. It takes me about 5 minutes... However, it will take longer if I just walk.
So, the question is, since you're saying jogging isn't THAT MUCH more efficient, should I walk instead for more calorie burn?
The running will develop your cardiovascular strength more. BUT for just pure calorie burn, it's only slightly more then walking around the building. The walk will take you like 18-20 minutes on average. What I like about walking, especially as a weightlifter, is that it burns those calories without tiring out your muscles before the next days workout. Walking is an easy low impact way to burn calories without any risk of losing lean muscle tissue or coming to your lifting workouts tired.
A couple of months ago, i jogged for 5 mins around a lake and I found it VERY hard and out of breath! I think it helped me lose weight more. After a few days i did lose weight.
def agree with you there man i like this guy for true unbiased info and scooby for great plans and home weigttlifting exercises, but i hate STANDFIRM!!!

No, you do not burn more calories because you've ran at mid-day or any other time. You were just hotter and probably sweat more because of the heat naturally.
You bet. Some time when you're bored you should go on the internet and find a picture of what 5 pounds of fat looks like. It's volumous as hell. 2 lbs of fat is like stuffing a gym sock full of newspaper. 5 lbs. is almos the size of a bowling ball....almost. Yet, it floats if put in water. So yeah, losing 5 or 10 lbs of fat over the next few months will make a huge difference. Good luck man.
By the way luvufc, when you cut 150 calories per day, just approximate it. It doesn't have to be excact. You can just to it at one meal or 50 calories out from dinner and lunch and breakfast. It's up to you. And if you can, try to eliminate it from the saturated junk food department. I think an apple is like 100 or 130 cals..I think. Don't eliminate a natural heatlhy food if you can. Just consiously have a few less chips per day or 1/3 less of a slice of pizza or something like that.
So by just easing up a bit on the beer, eliminating 150 calories per day of food intake,..which is really nothing, especially with junk food, and increasing your walking or running by 2 miles per week, you will burn about 8000 additional calories per month. 16,000 over the next 2 months. 3500 calories = 1 pound of fat. Fat is volumous, t's NOT dense like muscle or mercury. It actually floats in water. So losing 4.5 pounds of fat from your body will eliminate that belly fat deposit believe me.
You must be working very hard and for sure burning quite a few calories daily to be as lean as you sound,...minus the little bellyfat. That's good. If you could add just a mile or two of walking or move your running from 9 miles to 11 miles a week, that will really add up in time. Say 6 less beers per week = 660 calories + 150 calories less food per day X 7 days = 1050 calories + the 660 = 1710 cals + 2 miles extra walking/running = 290 calories + 1710 = ....2000 calories a week burned!!!!
You don't have to eliminate your drinking. It does not " have to go." The key here is slight reductions. If your drinking 24 cans of beer a week, cut it to 20 or 18 if you can. (Laughing), I can't believe I'm talking about diet to someone and telling them to please try to only drink 20 cans of beer a week! Luvufc, I don't know you, but you sound like a guy a good guy and a guy lot of people like to hang around. As far as the diet, no just eat a bit less or clean it up just slightly.
wow i never thought about like that, yes i drink 7 days a week, 2,600 cals a week, holy shit! my diet is a few days good and the rest bad, in that i mean fast food, pizza, chips,no sweets o, and no soda either.your writ about grappling,we role about 10 to 15 mins, and rest and bs for 10 mins, lol, thanks for the imput,my drinking has to go! clean up my diet. should i fast walk for an hour insted of running for 35 mins?
In sports like boxing and wrestling, yes there is some legs involved, but not continuesly like biking or running. Boxing and wrestling are a lot of upper body work, hips and what not, and your legs move you around..up and down and such. It's stop and start. Great work for the muscles and cardio system for sure and yes there is calorie burn, but you see plenty of heavy pro boxers and wrestlers and pretty much NO heavy competitive runners and biking athletes. Runners/bikers tend to better diets.
I used to Box, and I was in the same situation that you're in. When I was younger I watched my diet a bit more, NEVER drank, and was more dedicated to my hill running and distance road work. As the years went by and I got older, I would drink on the weekends, bar time eating, and did most of my training in the gym with the gloves on, in the ring, heavy bag and so on. I now know why I went up 2 divisions.Running, because it uses the legs and is continues, over time is the better and fat burner.
You might be suprised to learn luvufc, that running doesn't burn as many calories as you might think. Walking 1 miles burns about 90-100 calories. Running is more, but not that much more. Maybe 120-130 cal per mile at the most. You're only burning about 1100 calories or so from 9 miles of running. Physical labor is great. Lifting is great,..builds muscle. But the act of lifting by itself is NOT a huge calorie burner. Cardio IS for the most part. Grappling is great, but it's stop and start.
Beer and wine and most booze will spike your insulin a bit. The danger with any kind of booze is when it spikes your insulin, it will drop rapidly a few hours later. Then you're starving. That's what bar time eating is all about. You want something that will raise your blood glucose levels back to normal. Remembering my partying days, nothing did that like omlettes with sour cream and chocolate chip cookies. Thousands of extra calories...besides the beer calories. Lots of fat deposit there!
I wish I would have checked back sooner luvufc. You say you enjoy 3-4 light beers a night? Is that 7 days a week? From what I remember light beer is about 110 calories per can. If you're having 3-4 beers per night X 7 days, that's about 24 beers per week. That = 2,640 calories per week from beer alone. Do you think you're drinking a 24 pak of beer per week? Your body reads alchohol like a poison. It will spend time dealing with "the poison" and deposit other calories as fat. What's Ur diet like?
luvufc, I'd be willing to give you some advice that I feel would really get you to where you want. I'll post this and see if you come back again to post. Hope to hear back from you.
may be somebody can help me with this, i am 36 years old, i jog 9 miles a week,i do submission grappling 3 days a week and i have a phisical job 5 days aweek, but i am a skinny fat person,i am toned evry were exept this fat around my waist just below my belly button. my diet is not so good, i enjoy 3 to 4 light beers anight,my wife says its the beer but i dont agree. im not kidding i have no bodyfat exept this fing pooch under my belly button, some addvice to get rid of it please.
when i first started jogging I would get tire in 2 minutes(i wasn't overweight at that time but I was gaining weight) so its been 2 weeks since I started running and now I could run longer distances with no problem... Ive lost alot of belly fat too..
You lost a lot of belly fat when running? It didn't work for me! Can you please share with me some details? About the speed you take and the duration you run? Thank you
the key to losing wait and getting ripped is to "EAT LESS & exercise MORE" that is key..not a DIET..you could still eat the food you love but less of it..you also can't eat candy, fast food, package snacks, etc etc.. I jog 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes. you don't have to run fast to burn fat.. you could start by jogging slow, and then increasing speed over time..you could eat up to 5 healthy meals a day..and remember you are not going to see results in just 2 days, so be patient
JackDawson, are you presently losing weight or waist size? Or are you steady at 156lbs? If the 1500 cal is creating a calorie deficit, and it should, you'll be losing weight AND more importantly, your waist size will be trending downward. I try to lose 1/4 inch per week and 1 lb. of weight. The waist measurement is I believe the best indicator if you're losing fat. Many times we take in more cals then we think. If you're 21, you might be on the beer. Those calories count too.
Hey answer me please, I jog 40 mins everyday! I lift weights 3 times a week (3 sets of biceps and 3 sets of tricep exercises). I eat 1500 calories a day.. i'm 5'11, 21 years old... in how long will I lose the fat layer i have on my abs? I weight 156 but I DO have fat on my body! Thank you! You're awesome.
your not eating enough calories and instead of jogging id advise HIIT, it only takes four minutes 2-3 times a week and is way more effective, as for the weights, the only thing that will tone when exercising your arms is your arms

I'm of the opinion that brisk walking is best for weight control and minimal injury. Unlike running and jogging especially if your carrying extra weight, or if your an older person or as you get older the pounding that running and jogging do to your joints could cause injuries and then you would be out weeks if not months. Just a thought!
gooruraw 5 months ago
I agree but in walking it depends upon on how fast you walk...it is sometimes equivalent to jogging but it all depends to the individual.

Thanks.

@LoftyProduction Cardio shape shouldn't take too long 2 weeks, maybe.

Hi Steve
Can you please tell me what burns more calories, jogging for an hour, or jogging for just 30 minutes but at twice the pace?
Many thanks.....I miss your Blog Talk Radio:(
ODanboy 10 months ago
@ODanboy I hate to say this but it really depends on the person's conditioning. BUT usually longer cardio burns more calories for most people.
BodyPerformanceTV 10 months ago
@ODanboy Jogging doesn't burn much calories, try to use a machine, like an elliptical. those are much more effective for burning fat, trust me i know.

Burned calories per minute is higher in jogging. You could walk for a longer period and burn more calories. Jogging boosts metabolism though so you might be burning calories for a longer period after you stop. Lift weights, that's my advice.

Then on tues and thursday do my boxing workout where i hit the hell out of the bag for 1-3 min then rest 1 min, be overtraining or will it be good, plus im thinking about running on saturdays. So ill be working out 6 days a week. Is this too much?

mulafresh 1 year ago

Wonub 1 year ago
Well I have a workout for you guys that might get your heart going really well. OK first make sure you stretch really good for this. Than you start off with a 8 second sprint.....as fast as you can go. Than you take a 12 second break. After 12 seconds you start back to a 8 second sprint again. Do this 12 times so total of 4 minutes. After you get that set in you take a 1 minute break. Than you repeat 4 more sets of that. I had a very hard time getting first set done. OUT OF SHAPE lol.

zakaslam1 1 year ago

That is impossible, if you have to eat to live, you will have fat store in your body. There is no such thing as "there is no fat on your body"
Sicilian49 1 year ago
Unless youre an anorexic/bulimic that jus entirely drains your body of fat tissue
MidwestShufflerz 1 year ago
what if you have no fat on your body and you keep burning more calories than you take in?
punanibuzzed 1 year ago
Then you will consume muscle. Sicilian49 is correct as far as there is always some fat on your body. NEVERTHELESS, when bodybuilders near competition time, they are VERY vunerable...and almost always do, lose some lean muscle mass near competitiion time. The idea in the months before competition is to try to limit your fat loss to about 1/4 lb (4 oz.) per week.
brushfour 1 year ago
nobody has zero percent bodyfat, theres a healthy minimum of like 5% for males and like 21% for females, any less than that is unhealthy and it defeats the purpose lol.

i run on the treadmill 3 times a week for 40 minutes at a time at 6.5 mph burning around 700 calories each time...how long at this rate will it take me to lose 20 lbs? I just started bout a month ago.
uzavas 2 years ago
@uzavas about 12 weeks, theoretically. you burn calories throughout the day, which adds to that, probably shortening that time, and if you eat well, that will help shorten the time as well.
GraffLife25 2 years ago
You're doing great but you're probably not burning that many calories. Marathoners running 13 mph burn 650 calories an hour.

Kjutte1 2 years ago
The running will develop your cardiovascular strength more. BUT for just pure calorie burn, it's only slightly more then walking around the building. The walk will take you like 18-20 minutes on average. What I like about walking, especially as a weightlifter, is that it burns those calories without tiring out your muscles before the next days workout. Walking is an easy low impact way to burn calories without any risk of losing lean muscle tissue or coming to your lifting workouts tired.

What's Ur diet like?

when i first started jogging I would get tire in 2 minutes(i wasn't overweight at that time but I was gaining weight) so its been 2 weeks since I started running and now I could run longer distances with no problem... Ive lost alot of belly fat too..
elsenciillo 2 years ago
You lost a lot of belly fat when running? It didn't work for me! Can you please share with me some details? About the speed you take and the duration you run? Thank you
Altarcraft 2 years ago
the key to losing wait and getting ripped is to "EAT LESS & exercise MORE" that is key..not a DIET..you could still eat the food you love but less of it..you also can't eat candy, fast food, package snacks, etc etc.. I jog 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes. you don't have to run fast to burn fat.. you could start by jogging slow, and then increasing speed over time..you could eat up to 5 healthy meals a day..and remember you are not going to see results in just 2 days, so be patient

What is HIIT?
cyberkat714 2 years ago
I'd advise HIIT as well. And that's totally right, the only thing you'll build or tone is your arms if you only train arms.

How'd they get burned?!

ReturnOfJackDawson 2 years ago
your not eating enough calories and instead of jogging id advise HIIT, it only takes four minutes 2-3 times a week and is way more effective, as for the weights, the only thing that will tone when exercising your arms is your arms
