  • it is very touching song yesterday i watched a video about the hollercaust and that was the baking track was mad world and i nearly cried i love this song

  • Nothing is wrong with the font... Don't criticize his/her work when you don't know how difficult to an animation in kinetic typography is to make. Great work, very impressive! Please make more!

  • @SixStringsofFury

There is absolutely something wrong with the font, it's not capturing the mood of the song. The important thing about design/graphic design/motion graphics is the idea of communication, and this project could do a better job of it. Additionally, there is nothing wrong with constructive criticism, how else would Grunkie learn? No one is saying that making a video like this is easy (it's also not as hard as you think with AE), they're just offering advice.

  • @SixStringsofFury

Have you ever even seen good kinetic typography/motion graphics?

  • thumbs up if this is the best song ever

  • what program is this?

  • If you used a slightly slimmer font, with bleed effects almost like ink I believe. Also when you do a type of video like this there has to be constant movement to keep the persons attention but you did one hell of a good job on this well done.

  • Well done. I agree with efernalgumby.

  • @foredamusic what the hell is wrong with you?

  • @foredamusic You like rap music. You're opinion is forever invalid. Anyone can talk fast and put a crappy beat behind it, but music like this actually takes skill, prat ice and musical talent.

  • This is really good! Be proud! I would suggest, though that the words appearing feels very jarring for such a slow paced song. I would suggest fading them in or something a little calmer.

  • how many titles you add to this project?

  • loved when the i fell off or "died" wish i knew how to do things like this

  • @sprinklerrboi54 then why dont you learn =]

this is after effects. plenty of tutorials online

  • nicely donee <3

  • all songs need to be done in Kinetic Typography, would be so beast .

  • great work! i love typography..... :D

  • great vid man! i love kinetic typography :)

  • great job, 1 of the best on youtube!

  • Hey,great work. Can you help me a bit by telling me the software i can use for kinematic typography? will appreciate it a lot mate!

  • @digitallydenied

Adobe After Effects CS4 or CS5

  • I like all the animations etc. but I think the text you used is much too thick for such a smooth song

  • at 00:26 it says i love you!

  • Im stunned, great

  • Nicely done, I liked the flow a lot . Try varying the font when you get to the chorus or at least "Mad World". Good work for a class project!

  • Did you keyframe animate this?

  • good try

  • Very nice!! :)

  • i just watched it for the second time..awesome song and typo..

  • I love this. o; <3

  • sweet

  • that was absolutely amazing. i will actually castrate the 26 people that clicked dislike :@

  • amazing :D

  • As many said, wrong font, but otherwise very good, though I'd like to see a little more of the transitions when the text pulls the screen with it to the side instead of just filling the whole thing up. But I guess this isn't the best song for that either.

  • I find it kinda funny that the M pushed the I....

  • Did you lay out in illustrator first?

  • Every lyrics video should be like this. Lol :D

  • This is just.. out there:)

  • I have to say that this is one, if not the, best piece of Kinetic Typography I have seen...

  • I was happy, now I am not, thanks....

  • AWESOME. :D

  • Looks really good, just turn on some motion blur. It's a bit jarring to the eyes. Very good job!

  • nice ideas, but the art direction it not good yet. wrong font, the composition often doesnt make sense. the colors are not perfect either. but good for a first project!

  • This song would scare me when I was little, it still kinda does.

  • Dude, I absolutely LOVE that song and you just made it better... Props. (Y)

  • What did you use to make this? After effects?

  • Great song, though a little depressig.

  • This is beautiful. Excellent work.

  • This is from Donnie Darko!!

    Best song!

  • classy

  • first attempt! no shit... beats my first attempt... then again i learned from an 8min youtube tut. still its FAR from perfect but i like it :)

  • loved it!!

  • THIS IS ON BAD COMPANY!!

  • It's not perfect, but it works for me. Very entertaining.

  • i think its timed alright

but the camera movements seem jerky

    good video though

  • the speeds are slightly off for the song same with the effects

  • very nice, wrong font though

  • @Roghog1414 How do you know which font to choose? Is it just an artistic instinct? Just wondering cause I was thinking about trying my hand at one of these.

  • @DaSasquatchHobo Haha its def. not instinct, when i was first introduced to the arts I had no idea what a good font/bad font was. I would recommend something more post modern, no comic fonts. Try a sans, or a bold of one of your favorite fonts. I would recommend watching more videos and develop a font taste of your own. Decide which ones you think are bad or not. I enjoy Helvetica alot as well

  • @Roghog1414 Thanks, that was sound advice. I picked up from the internet that comic sans is abhorred, so I'll stay away from that. Thanks for the tips

  • good after effects skills, but they didn't really fit the song. i agree with the suggestion below me to use a different, much less bold font. other things to try would be a slower, more fluid, and surreal, almost, flow of words.

  • Cool video, wrong font choice. The text should NOT be so big and so bold. The movement, effects, and transitions are good, where used. I wish there were a few more of them, and fewer instances where the words simply appear on the screen in time with the singing, as opposed to interpretively behaving like the sentence or word would indicate.

  • Nice!

  • great typography video!

I am making one of my own, but i need to know how you get the radial gradient background... it seems simple because a lot of typography videos have it, but i just cant figure out how to do it. please help. (i'm using after effects of course)

  • create it using photoshop, and just import the file.

    There are workarounds!

  • Layer

    New Solid

    Effect

    Generate

    Ramp

Change it from linear to radial in the effects panel

  • @sharpmarker108 you can also make a new adjustment layer, make a elliptical mask, invert that, add effect>color correction>curves and boost the contrast. feather the mask afterwards to create the ramp. it seems difficult, but you have more influence on colour and shape of the gradient.

  • @sharpmarker108 Effects < Generate < Ramp

  • Well done.

The text was a bit big in places but that can be scaled down.

Seemed well planned, nice timing on 'camera' moves, also my favorite parts were with the pictures too.

  • The LARGE text is too over bearing for the song. Also you should of used more than one font. cool to look at though.

  • this is such an interesting video to watch, because the typography gets so markedly better from beginning to end. great job!

  • the author of this piece of kitetics typography clearly didn't feel the song.

    .

text is too big. however, there were some nice parts. overally a disappointment, because i just love the song.

  • these are neat :)

  • Genius!! Really got the sense of the heaviness with the typo used and the crowding in/out of life. Depressing but poinient.

  • Happy birthday part is the bessst!

  • Vaya!!!

Que ingenio para hacer el video. EXCELENTE!!!

  • Why does this song always make me cry?

  • because u have no balls

  • No shit, I'm a girl haha.

  • POINT MADE! haha

  • not really...

  • then get off the comp and back in the kitchen

  • Sure thing, would you like a sandwich while I'm in there?

  • yes turkey no crust

  • With what kind of chips?...and a drink too I'm sure.

  • no chips just mountain dew and hurry up

  • because the vibrations it makes gives your brain have a sense of sad with deep tones and depressing lyrics. :)

  • I think the font was a good choice. Though the letters were blocky, they fit together rather well.

  • very good .. its one of my favorite songs.. i think i would have liked to have seen it in a different font but i still like it :) thanks for your hard work

  • the version doesnt matter much, it can be done with both.

  • i bet this would of taken him at least 3 days

  • Cmon seriously?

    Dude, That's fucked up.

It wasn't even bad, I mean, not a fucking masterpiece, but It's the guy's first time.

You insulted him pretty bad without giving any criticism. (And on that point I must say to the creator, more font selection would be nice)

  • okay, I'm back with some advice instead of just being an ass... like I usually am. The font is pretty bad, something less bulky would be nice, if for some reason you choose just one font, play with the italic, bold kerning etc, if HELP! Try making the transitions between words less choppy, more organic if you will. Don't focus so much on how you position the text so you have a certain "slide". Try to build around a word instead of building with words. Also you should look into some other colors.

  • Masterpiece.

  • You could do this in CS3. I did a Kinetic Typography project for class. Check it out on my page sometime if you like.

  • AWESOME! Great job!

  • This is a great song, and a great first typography. Can I ask, what font is this? It looked kind of like impact at first, but it just doesn't look like a standard font, little differences. I like it.

  • what did you use to make this?

  • The description says it was after an After Effects class, so that would be my guess

  • Awesome song, awesome kinetic typography.

  • Dude thanks you soo much for this video, favorite song yo and the animation just makes its so much better

  • I thought this was great.. very well done.

and I didnt think the bold typeface took away from the music at all.

  • This song was originally done by tears for fears

  • good call

  • Yes, yes it was. But this version is done by Gary Jules. If this was the Tears for Fears version, that would of been in the title.

  • this version is better though, tff needed to slow it down some like gary jules does.

don't get me wrong, i love tears for fears.

  • I really love music typography like this one

but you should really release another version with just blur on and smooth keyframes

(click the last keyframe and hit F9 Its so worth it)

DonT get me wrong its absolute great work there

just some tips to make your fans happy^^

  • Will totally try that out. Thanks for the tip.

  • Ignore the haters, its a very decent piece.

  • This is too literal... plus the typeface doesn't really reflect the mood of the song...

  • bad design...the bold typeface doesn't reflect Gary Jules somber voice nor the tone of the music...

who ever taught you motion theory should be fired...

  • I like it, but it doesn't really seem to take anything from the song but the words. If I were watching it with the sound off, I wouldn't know what the song felt like, you know?

  • you obvisouly dont understand that it based off the typography not the music

  • This guy is totally correct; he's demonstrating typography effects, not music. Very well done FX!

  • Excellent! 5 star rating!

  • great job!

nevertheless i find it a bit to turbulent adn worrisome.

  • Very creative, I can tell this must have taken a lot of time and effort. My only critique would be that the bold font choice and some of the quick transitions don't fit the mood of this slow, sad song. Still a very well done piece. :)

  • 0.0

  • beautiful

  • i love it!

  • you shouldn't make it your goal to constantly fill up the white space.

  • um, not by Gary Jules, but by Tears for Fears.

Gary covered it for Donnie Darko, or before maybe.

  • This is the Gary Jules version.

  • o_O

    yes? i already said that..?

  • I know eh?

  • hey, I have an idea, let's criticize people for the most insignificant things!

  • i like tears for fears better lol

  • hey how were you able to post the song? I made a lso a typography to a song but i couldnt put i bc of the rights, please let me know. Thanks

  • Have you online lessons with adobe after effects?

  • Well done m8 ;)

But the Text is sometimes a little bit asynchron to the music...

  • T_T so sad an true, reminds me of my self, beautiful song, great animation

  • great song, great animation!

  • Hey check out my kinetic typography animation as well. Its also done for a school assignment using After Effects. The objective was to use a short voice over from a movie.

    Do check it out!

  • What program did you use?

  • I used Illustrator and After Effects

  • Love it!

  • wow, this is the first vid that has been a full song that i've seen tonight... or rather this morning. XD

my god, i don't know where to start with this. First off i guess, amazing song to choose. Such a deep and morose song, and your different effects did a very good job with it. the effects with Faces, and sorrow's transition to tomorrow are very amazing. only critique from me would have been to make Dying at 2:22 to flicker out completely.

if you didn't get an A, there is no justice! XD

  • this song is just too damn sad. good job though

  • i mean in an emotional way, not a pathetic way. just to clarify

  • i know what you mean mac. but still, there is a certain appeal in sad songs. X)

  • How did you make this?

  • You're so talented. What font/s is/are that?

  • one of the best sympathizing type treatments to tone of content.

    cheers.

  • Donnie Darko 2 in 2009

  • S. Darko

  • Wow, it's fantastic! I especially love the way you treated the different emotions in the song and applied the transparent effects to portray the fading quality of the singers voice. The color choices are really perfect for the song too and the whole scheme is really effective, especially once you use the red to cause the "dying" type stand out. This is definitely one of the best I've seen here.

  • very cool and good for a 1st time project and not just for a first timer... its just perfect! 5/5

  • I just discovered this whole typography thing after following a link on digg for the still alive song. as a frustrated graphic designer have to say I really enjoy it. For some strange reason reminds me off old Soviet Union poster art or Blue Note record covers. 'bout time we had a decent internet meme. Anyone recommend any good dedicated sites? Lovely video BTW

  • nice!

  • Good stuff

  • This just makes me wanna fight Locust. In a good way.

  • i really love this. :)
