  • Was this music inspiration for Sega Genesis themes?

  • i was born in 1991:o my dad introduced this to me as a kid and i swear this has got to be the best there is in this style of music, its out of this world! thanks mike :D ! <3

  • I hear the exorcist theme in the beginning lol

  • perfect ambience

  • JohhnyStingray1 - the set is an OGWT compilation done and aired in about 198? - a retrospective if you like - so we are both right, you for your perspicacity and accuracy and me because I am.

    :o)

  • When I hear this I imagine a river flowing some smooth parts and other parts its a raging torrent

  • 26 ppl are just ignorant to this genre :(

  • i love mike oldfields latest album music of the spheres but what other albums are out their that sound like it?? ive downloaded the tron legacy soundtrack cause thats pretty epic but what else should i go for??? please someone help me!

  • @apsinthion Have you tried Camel - the snow goose

  • Dont forget in the early 1970s this was some thing completely different... to quote Monty Python... and it still is... the nearest we going to get to a popular image of classical music... check out Terry Rileys "Rainbow on Curved Air" which Mike admits inspired him to do TB

  • 26 People like their bells round.

  • S U P E R !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song spoooks the shit out of me even now

  • Crap like chuj new version is better ;)

  • 24 dislikes??? How come? Billboard's #79 hit of '74. Hit #7 pop, and, #15 AC. God bless!

  • who would say at 1973 that this song will become an exorcist's theme xD

  • Richard Branson was the man who helped mike oldfield all the way with this song =)

The maker of virgin to those who doont know. Reading his book =D

  • @gead11 We used to say it was Mike who helped make Branson ;-).

  • @pmgruhn true, true... =D

  • @gead11 I I agree with pmgruhn, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells helped the fledgling Virgin records become more then a flash in the pan. its hard to imagine how much money Branson made out this Album....Thanks to the Hard work and musical skills of Mr Oldfield. Of course Mike made a nice few bob as well.

  • @lndac02 Yes, i said it wrong =)

  • Comment removed

  • @TRosca71 yes i saw a documentary about how this album was made, it made Branson, and Oldfield, how the hell Oldfield made this album all by himself is beyond belief, and to go on to be one of the best albums of all time along with Dark Side of the Moon is out of this world, makes me so proud this guy did this work, I,ll never get bored with this album, one in a million years time maybe?

  • ich bin 71 geboren. hätte ich gewusst, was ich zu der zeit verpasst habe..... ich hätte schon lange an die bauchdecke meiner mama geklopft. zeitlose, geniale musik. kann man nur süchtig von werden. mehr davon. Danke Mike!

  • A Masterpiece!

  • Amazing...

Jakie to ..dźwięczne,jakie lekkie, a zarazem emocjonujące.

  • I must have heard this 5 million times and it just never stales.

  • DROMMELS DROMMELS EN NOG EENS DROMMELS!!

  • I remember when I was about 5, I noticed my uncle had the Tubular Bells picture disc in his collection of LP's. I'd never seen a picture disc before. I got a loan of it, took it home and listened to it through my dads headphones. Totally mesmerized I was.

  • I remember going into the Preston branch of Woolworths in 1973ish... and getting two of their cheap organs... switching them on in the shop and playing tubular bells on them both... I had an audience and the young jobsworth of an assitant manager coming up and unplugging the power supplies... so... he didnt want to sell any of his crap keyboards then??? LOL

  • Nice story - a moral tale !

    F.W.Woolworth, where are they now?

    Cheers old chap.

  • @jethrohoyt They went out of business in 1997. The UK Woolworths went out in 2009.

  • @jethrohoyt Woolworth's are in Australia in a duopoly, killing the small shopping centres, doing groceries. Bastards. Should have stuck too selling instruments.

  • @zedster911 Your generation rules man!

  • @zedster911 I did a similar thing in another famous chain of stores while my daughter was buying a guitar I set a drumkit to my liking and started playing the solo to Beatles "the end", I was told to stop that noise! My daughter said cm`on dad let`s go to a better store, we did and my dauughter bought a Martin and I was given the drumsticks after a repeat performance:)

  • @zedster911 And I saw Mike Oldfield in Preston as well - I think 1979

  • @zedster911 Legend!!!

  • I love it, but it kinda creeps me out!!

  • I too can remember watching this video for the first time seems like yesterday...Nothing can come even close today Mike Oldfield is a true genious

  • Oh i JUST LOVE IT!!

  • the exorcist

  • greatttttttttttttt

  • stupid people skiing

    hmmpf

    stupid vid

  • Love it! This was one of the first albums I purchased with my Babysitting money back in 1977. Probably an 8 trac or the record.

  • When I hear this music, I in no way, shape or form think about skiing. Blech. Great music, but massively disappointing video.

  • I just LOVE you, Mike Oldfield!!!

  • HIt #7 in Billboard. 1 long 49 min. piece. Did it chart in the UK? God bless!

  • What a magic sound!

  • man on moon?

  • Bassie & Adriaan!

  • My favorite version of tubular bells is the alt country version he has just released.......

  • IMO, the bass was always too quiet in the original version, glad he corrected it in the 2003 version.

  • @bergqvistjl you cant have been listening BOY ;)

  • this is a beautiful video and song :)

  • I saw Mike Oldfield in concert on my 21st birthday (a long long time ago). This brings back great memories. Thanks.

  • Dude, what kind of a man are you when you don't know what a LP is?:p

  • no need to be sarcastic, lucario was only politely asking, he knows what an LP is

  • Lol. Smart ass.

  • There's an intriguing alternative 'mirrored' version to the intro of Tubular Bells. Type Tubular Bells Mirror into YouTube and check it out!

  • I just figured out why.

This was Part A of the album in Part 1. The one I am familiar with is Part C of Part 1. That is my real personal favorite.

  • That's odd...the Tubular Bells I know sounds much different than this. Does anyone know the difference between both Tubular Bells?

  • Maybe you heared the Orchestral Tubular Bells Version?

  • This video is Part 1A of Tubular Bells. The one I know is Part1C of Tubular Bells. Check it out.

  • Tubular bells is a 50 minutes long album, made of 2 "songs". This is just after the famous part of Tubular Bells.

  • And Exorcist too. :D

  • Anyone know which track it is that follows directly after this one? One canonly hear the guitar in the very end of this clip? Would appreciate it!

  • I'll give you a clue - Police...........

Which track? Can you work it out??

  • Err..no?

  • It took me a while to work it out but this is the exact bit of video that follows the one above.

    Search on --

"Police can't stand losing you ogwt"

  • @jethrohoyt it would be amazing if it was The Police, they didn't form the band until 1977 and the album with that tune on it didn't come out until 1978...five years after this OGWT clip.

  • On this album you've got just two tracks. Part I and II. On tubular bells II the fragment is a second track and it's called Sentinel.

  • bellissima

  • The footage is amazing! True daredevils they are..Just look at the jumps. And they do it on planks more or less!

  • still get the goose bumps

  • the man is a GENIUS!!

  • thank you so much....

  • I remember sitting watching this on TV the first night it was shown. It was a thoroughly, jaw dropping, original piece of music. Still sounds fresh and new today.

  • Thats coz you're an old geezer like me (well, almost) and a Brit.

I'nt it great eh? Stuff like this. I was also sitting somewhere in England watching this the first time it was shown. Then in 198? I taped a special they did. Including this one. There have been some great messages posted including someone who told me where the filming took place and by whom. Amazing!

  • BEAUTIFULL SONG -- SALUDOS DESDE PERU

  • Is it true that this tune still has the record for the No 1 in the singles as well as the record spot??

  • I alws wanted to see how they were skiing at that time...thx for the movie

  • that's funny to me

  • Awesome skiing.. From a norwegian skiier : )

  • Hey, skiing and tubular bells....what's not to like ?

  • new age/prog rock sound

  • FANTÁSTICO!!!

  • i love mike oldfield. my stepdad is a big fan of him also. i love this version.

  • i love how around 2:23 the sound warps, i love when music does that

  • the best wersion

  • who cares this is a milk for ears

  • Había escuchado hablar de este video, pero no daba credito, increible.

  • no sabia que habia una version de tantos años original esto es increible jajajaj que bueno

  • That version is so indescribably *sigh* you know...fecking amazing, as a young boy that was cruelly coolest, especially that werewolf, remember that shit? on the LP? Man, whatever, it is truly epic.

  • oldfield is a genius

  • I love this beautiful track!!

  • Kuis & die Nazi-Lavine!!

  • pardon,

    "Luis"

  • great song check out my acoustic fingerstyle guitar arrangment of this and many others feel free to comment

  • THE CLASSIC !

  • a song doesn't need to have words :O:P!

  • how did this end up being the exorcist theme song?

  • I think the answer is quite simple:

This song gives me, and I think millions of other people too, the creeps.

  • Song? theres no words

  • You know what I mean.

  • Richard Branson, head of then what was just Virgin, tried to sell this record in the States...the whole track is about 45 minutes long and so no-one wanted to touch it (apart from British DJ/Genius John Peel who played the whole thing), however the American guy Branson took this too (the name escapes sorry, Turkish origins though) went out on a limb and stuck Tubular Bells as the theme tune to The Exorcist....the success of the film brought the success to the record overseas. Great Marketing!

  • Branson was british

  • He still is.

  • You know I'll NEVER know that but for sure Mike got a pretty penny from the royalties but it was the most mismatched score I ever heard in my life. There is nothing frightening about this modern masterpiece whatsoever.

  • exactly

  • The part in the movie where this song is played is not scary. the song fits perfectly.

  • lol for real... why'd they think this would go with some girl possessed by the devil

  • because Mike Oldfield didn't want to tour so Ricard Branson was afraid that he would never make any money on it in the United States (though it was a huge hit in the UK) so he arranged it to be on the Sound track of the Exorcist to introduce it to the US

  • This video is so funny

  • brilliant piece of music

  • The footage is by Leni Riefenstahl, "Hitler's Phtographer", and its use with TB predates music videos when the OGWT would pair incongruous footage with then current music (it WAS the '70s, man). The Zep clip was Trampled Underfoot, with footage of 20s "flapper" dancers.

  • This video is kinda funny..I love antique footage

  • its scary what they used this music on

  • Does this "music video" strike anyone else as being fucking hilarious?

  • I find it amazing because I wouldn't have balls to get on those crap wooden skis and just ho straight downhill :D

  • People skiing to Tubular Bells? It's not working for me. Doesn't go together.

  • I'm siding with you

  • Bassie en adriaan lol

  • Hhaahahaha jah

  • Not a bad job.

I like their way of thinking.

  • Whistle Test were famous for creating music vids when certain bands could not make the show. They used to pair up Led Zep with old movies of the 40s, I recall one with dancers performing to ragtime numbers

  • in 1973 they had dr who and that was in colour i know i was born in 1963

  • Pamietam czasy przy tej muzyce, kiedy to graliśmy w magie i miecz a ona leciała w tle. Aż chciało sie grać

  • I love this song it was in everyday casettplayer or lp-recorder on -70`s fabulous

  • they used this soundtrack in a popular kidsshow in holland. I always thought it was made for that show, untill my dad said it was an existing song of Mike Oldfield,

    Cool melodie!

  • Yeah, it was used for the movie "The exorcist" too.

  • Haha Bassie en Adriaan

  • i love this "old" version! no snowboarders, no funny hats in 1973

  • I thought those things on their heads were funny hats O_O I want one! xD

  • eh its also not a video from 1973 judging by the film quality..

  • Is it younger or older? :)

  • yeah sorry was ahving a dumb moment....

  • uh second dumb moment of the day...

  • You DO realise that even 1973 film can be in black & white? And ever thought that it's possible to create the effect of a really old film?

  • This video is not from 1973 year movie. this is way much olderolder

  • The footage is actually from the 30s/40s, but it was used on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1973 as a 'music video' for the track

  • IF you're replying to me, yes it is probably from the 30s/40s (although it looks more like 10s/20s), I was just saying it's very possible to make a 1973 movie look old. Just like it's possible to make a 1930s movie looks much newer than it is. I mean... the 1939 verson of Wizard of Oz looks a lot more modern because it's got no flickering, and it's in colour, and pretty crystal clear, for a movie that old.

  • No I was replying to the user before me, 13 hrs ago. There seems some confusion on the age of the film so I wanted to clarify. Bob Harris of Whistle Test stated it was 30s/40s but you're prob right it could be even earlier, its prob a guesstimate

  • i don't know why but this makes me feel so

    mellow at the beginning

  • Awesome!

  • great music and good film

  • Haven't heard this part of the LP since 1973. Oh what a time.

  • lol tubular bells pwns!

  • It would be better if people knew this great piece without thinking of a film.

Branson and Oldfield have alot to thank each other for...

just wish MO would do some live stuff in th UK.

  • i love this..<3

    it's so mystic

  • The thought of Linda Blair's face scares the shit out of me when I hear this.

  • What an absolute genius! He was around 18 when he composed this, this man was born for music!

  • OMG I LOVE TUBULAR BELLS!!!

  • Moomia, oddly enough, I don't see/hear any resemblance except in the most abstract of ways - and rarely at that.

  • BASSIE EN ADRIAAN

  • I looooove the end!!creo que cambia a un tono Mayor no estoy muy segura pero por la impresión creo que si

  • também creio que sim

  • hahahahahaah!!! XD I every time that I listen the tubular Bells, I remember The Exorcist movie, I this video is funny, is funny looks the litle mens in his little skies, hahahaha

  • Tubular Bells main theme is a replica/arrangement of a J.S. Bach Tocatta, and is used only by barely 6 measurements, the opus in question, in case anybody wants to check or hear is: J.S. Bach Tocatta in D minor, BWV 565 measurements 42-48, commonly played "ad nauseaum" in halloween.

  • well let`all hope that the likes of you,can find out for your self!! soon....

  • what ?:S :S :S is that english?

  • the result of google translation.

  • I'm flying!!!

  • a co tam , i tak nikt nie zrozumie : ZAJEBISTE !

  • ja zrozumiałam. : D

    i się zgadzam. ^^

  • Co racja to racja - fajnie powspominać czasy dzieciństwa :)

  • godly music

  • pašak ten majkl :D

  • epic

  • HEAPS better than the 2003 remix

  • I did wonder why Old Grey Whistle Test program used those images with TB music. Does anybody know? It's quite strange to watch it "ad hoc".

  • hehe this is vintage stuff

  • they're not very good at the whole skiiing thing!!! awesome track and hilarious video

  • tune gets deep in your mind

  • Brilliant album
