  • I can't put into words what this music does for my soul. This May I will be in Kona with my family for the 5th time and I am counting the days. Truly one has not experienced paradise without having visited Hawaii. Also some of the nicest people I have ever met in my life. I leave a piece of myself there every time I visit.

  • step 1: play HD BEST HAWAII BEACHES on youtube in the background

    step 2: play this video

    enjoy

    :D

  • @y512516 This is one of the coolest compliments ever. Thank you very much for the high praise. I really appreciate it

  • @sirduke58

I really felt like I was in Hawaii when I did that

    AWESOME SKILLS MAN!

    best slack key player EVER

  • where can I learn this? haven't been able to find any tabs around

  • I can hear the waves and the breezes blowing!

  • @sistersuetube I'm stoked that my rendition invoked those feelings in you Sue. I truly appreciate your kind words. BTW this song is played in C6th Maunaloa tuning C-G-E-G-A-E & until quite recently was a secret tuning. Thank you for inquiring.

  • so beautiful, brother. Mahalo for sharing

  • @indigogirl17 Mahalo for your kind words. Appreciative people like you are the motivation for sharing this art form.

    Warmest Aloha

    Duke

  • Again I drop in for the therapy of your music. This evening I referred a fellow musician to listen to your playing. My unknown friend, you music still sooths and heals. Thanks for sharing this wonderful music.

  • @WPMinor Bruddah Wayne, mahalo for stopping by again. I never get tierd of you praising this art form. Maybe you should give it go, I got a bunch of tabs I can share with you if you like. Let me know.

    Warmest Aloha Always

    Duke

  • I first heard this song on the spa channel on my tv service, that led me to purchase three Masters of slack key guitar CDs, I love this music, and this song is my all time favorite, you play it well. And I still don't even know what the term 'slack key' means! LOL, keep playing!

One day I hope to make it over to Hawaii and listen to this music live.

  • @rainkatt If you ever make it over to Hawaii call me & I'll pay you a visit & play it for you. Thank you for your very encouraging kind words.

    Warmest aloha

    Duke

  • Amazing! You can almost see the blue pacific if you close your eyes. The C6 tuning has a strong low voice that I find verey appealing. I might well work a few licks to improve my own picking.

  • Outstanding playing. Thanks for sharing!

  • @benzuckerman Thank you very much for your kind words Ben. I really appreciate the compliment. It's more a case of a great composition by a great composer (Ozzie Kotani) than the man behind the guitar.

  • One person is tone deaf

  • @hokulocal93 Much mahalo for the cool comment. The one "tone deaf lolo" no matter. The appreciative good folk like you is what really important. Mahalo again =o)>

    Aloha Always

    Duke

  • Who's the dislike? Tie him to low tide coral with plenty of sea urchins to poke his okole! Love this song...

  • @RickAHyatt He's a weird guy I had words with on another board. Not concerned about trolls like that. I'm more stoked about guys like you appreciating the art form of slack key. Makes it even more special when I have return visitors like you. Mahalo nui my bruddah i really appreciate the continued support.

    Warmest aloha

  • keep Hawaiian lands in white hands!

    SMOKE ICE BRAH!

  • @51nw KEEP HAWAIIAN LANDS IN HAWAIIAN HANDS

unless you rather smoke ice with an ignorant imature

    white man....... :(

  • @piercethevale Thank you very much for the awesome compliment. I'm glad you appreciate the art of slack key as much as I love to share it.

  • thanks brah .. I took this slack key guitar class at BYUH ... I discovered Kumu Kotani's music through this class and being a guitar addict bought all of the slack key masters including this album .. I wanted to learn this song... I forgot the tuning for this song I think the Am7th sounds like it anybody !!! tks..

  • @einc70 nevermind its the "Maunaloa" tuning tks brah ... been back in Tahiti 5 years now ... anyway l miss Hawaii.. mahalo all ...

  • @einc70 Howzit bruddah, it's always cool to meet a fellow student of Ozzie. Yup you're right about it being C6th Maunaloa tuning but for this video and Ozzie's recording it's tuned a half step lower. Mahalo for taking the time to comment here. If you ever come back to visit Hawaii/Oahu come check me out & we'll go up to visit Oz at his house.

    Warmest Aloha

    Duke

  • @sirduke58 Tks man... Our teacher was Kumu MANOA Kaipo he's the one who does the MC at the Hawaiian village at PCC maybe you know him. I'll be too shy to meet Kumu OZZIE... I stay quiet the whole time and just listen and watch... Thanks for the invitation... I'm too shy to even meet people...

  • Nahe nahe. Nice.

  • Ah again I drop in to listen to my "unknown friend" a true master of this style. As my next eldest brother is battling the later stages of cancer and my occupation is more stressful than ever, I find tranquility in your music. This may one be the last piece of music that is played for me when I reach the end of this life's journey. Thank you so much for posting this. You are a healer and probably don't even know it. Thanks posting.

  • @WPMinor Thank you again Brother Wayne for your inspiring words. I'm so glad you find an inner peace listening to slack key. Ozzie Kotani deserves the credit for composing this piece, I am just an instrument to spread the aloha. Please give my best wishes to your ailing brother. A close friend of mine just lost his own brother 2 weeks ago to the same battle. Peace be with you & yours my friend

  • Some long time before I used to live Hawai'i. Some good your playing lower my blood pressure even yet up here in high Rocky Mountains. Here get plenty blue sky when not arctic wind but - no body surfing. Mahalo again your playing so good.

Just wanted to pass some kind words across the planet and say thanks!!

    Be well,

  • Ahhh....just what dees tired bones an muscles need aftah one long day helping a capo friends on a film shoot...

  • I'm not sure whether to be inspired to continue to learn or depressed that my ambition is way beyond what I can do.

  • @simmo303 Be inspired my friend because i had huge doubts myself. I am not overly talented but I persisted and finally got it with a lot of effort. Truthfully if I can do it so can you. Believe me my friend it is totally digestible & achieveable. I seriously gave up on it over 10 times but tried & tried and got it one day. YOU WILL TOO!!!!

    Sincerely

    Duke

  • @simmo303 I seriously thought it was over my head when I first heard Ozzie's recording of Ku'u Kika Kahiko on a CD. I never thought I had the ability to play it. Hang in there it will come.

  • Bruddah Duke, I am still amazed at how well you play this, I'm still working on it!

  • thank goodness I don't have to get a doctor's prescription for this relaxation meditation, I can't afford it! Maholo plenty

  • @RickAHyatt Much mahalos for your cool comments Rick i thoroughly appreciate them. It's inspiring to know that you enjoy the art form of slack key & are receiving some health benefits to boot. I've heard others claim slack key lowered their blood pressure level a couple of points. I just love to share the art form, thank you for your kind words

    Mahalo & Aloha

  • Your music puts my heart and bp down to peace & I put it on my cellphone radio to listen to for 20 minutes a day. It's said that's the only proven method to bring down BP, and it works for me.

You should consider putting out a CD with that purpose exactly in mind, bra.

    Mahalo Plenty.

  • beautiful unco..

I've been getting a feel for the ki ho'alu but i don't sound anything like this..

  • Thank you so much my unknown friend. Been a very trying week and this is the first time in a while that I have been able to be soothed. An old uncle taught me this style when I was 10 years old. I have since left slack key but it has never left me. Perhaps I shall return. Peace my unknown Brother. You are a healer.

  • @Bocephys What an absolutely wonderful comment MY unknown friend. I am glad beyond words that the slack key that I so passionately love had that awesome soothing effect on you. You sir have made my and week and month....much mahalos for your thoughtful comment. If you have been inspired to revisit slack key let me know & maybe I can supply you with some tablature to get you started.

    Duke

  • @sirduke58 I intend to grab a guitar in a day or so and dial in this tuning and give this tune a whirl. My fingers will find the notes, the challenge will be for my brain to keep the events in proper sequence and for my heart to drive the spirit of the song. I fear my wife will grow weary of me playing this song long before I will. I could listen to you play it for weeks on end. I may contact for tab if I get hung up along the way. Good day my friend.

  • With all due respect to Ozzie the clarity of your steel string rendition is even more compelling (and no less nahenahe). Is this available on CD? Mahalo.

  • @pryanro Mahalo so much for the high praise. The Ovation is actually a nylon stringed guitar that Ozzie loaned to me. It's an awesome sounding guitar that produces a unique crisp treble sound reminiscent of a steel string.Although it wasn't totally clear to me I'm assuming you were asking is I had a CD of this available. I'm sorry I don't but I'm totally flattered. There is actually a way to download an MP3 from YouTube of the audio from the video. Sad to say I don't know how it's done. Aloha

  • I swear, the Europeans gave only one thing of worth to the island peoples. The guitar. Much respect, my friend. Aloha.

  • Mahalo for the kind words. It always amazes me when people from half way around the world are into slack key. We're all big fans of Raymond Kane BTW. Thanks again.

    Duke

  • Yr welcome. Been a fan for years! Dozen + cds shipped from Hawai'i, and plenty of shirts too. When my fortune arrives I'll be over.

  • Keep up the good work. The art of ki hoalu will continue to live in the practice of its traditions by students of the art.

    Aloha,

    Tom K.

  • brah good music...sound to smooth.

  • Beautiful! Back in 1990, I had the great fortune of accompanying a friend to a class given by none other than Maestro Kotani, at the U of H. It took me three years to become comfortable with his very simple Holomua. For me, Ki ho'alu is for Hawaii what Delta blues is for the mainland (thanks, in part, to a Hawaiian!). I'd like to say here that, while the song may be the composer, and the performance may echo the teacher, your ending is all player! Thanks for sharing your inspiration.

  • Thank you so much for the kind words.I am flattered to think that you feel I did the song & Ozzie justice with my rendition. An added bonus it the inspiration you derived from this video. Mahalo nui loa.

    Sincerely

    Braddah Duke

  • Bradah man, the first time I watched this, I was blown away. Now one week later, I'm motivated to learn Slack Key! I learned Ki Ho'alu and I've got to say, your chimes are SOLID in the end. Any song recommendations for a beginner like myself?

  • Sorry for not replying sooner. The best learning resource bar none is Ozzie Kotani's "Learn to play Hawaiian Slack Key" Shoot me one email,I might have some other help.

    Shootz

    Braddah Duke

  • Where did you find the TAB? I've looked online and found some great song books with other beautiful songs just not this one. My inlaws live on the big island and I would love to some day be able to play this song for them. Some day. :)

  • Beautifully played. I love this song. Did you have sheet music (or TAB) or did you just learn it by ear?

  • Thank you very much for the kind words. I learned it through tablature & even then it was a major struggle. This song makes me look better than I am. Thanks to the composer & my teacher Ozzie Kotani.

    Aloha & Mahalo Duke

  • Thank you so very much for the kind words & high praise.I am flattered by your comment, but seriously it's the song not so much the player :-)

  • man i can't get enough of that sound... its great nice going

  • Maybe I'm biased to the old style, but this is one of the few modern pieces that sounds like Hawaiian slack key. Too much finger style guitar being passed off as slack key these days. Thanks to Ozzie for this great composition. Your playing is smoove!

  • Again we're in total agreement. This is the only original ki ho'alu composition written in the last 30 years that I treasure with the classics.Side note: The only piece Ozzie has ever written in C6 Maunaloa!!!I totally with all your observation Jesse.Mahalo for saying exactly what I think.

  • Mahalo much Bob,really cool getting a nice

    comment from a fellow TPer!

  • Bruddah Duke,

This is Jessica dad, I was the one who sent the comment, I was on her computer, thanks for the reply! Question, are you playing this in C maunaloa tuning? I got to see Ozzie Kotoni a few year ago and I asked him if he had a tab copy of My Old Guitar and he was kind enough to send me a copy as well as some other tunes! Thanks for the encourgement, I'll resume my efforts!

    Aloha,

    Gary

  • Howzit Gary, Yes I'm playing in C6th Maunaloa tuning & I learned it from the same tabs you have.Ozzie told me he tabbed the song note for note to the CD recording because back then he tabbed for accuracy instead of playability. If you break it down & play in & out of difficult measures it's actually digestable.Don't give up on it like I almost did about 10xs.Hard one but so satisfying when you finally get it.Good luck & post it when you get it. I'd love to hear it. Braddah Duke
  • Bruddah Duke,

Thanks for the reply! The great thing about watching you play this is you make it look easy, which is encouraging! I have been hoping to find this on video or see Ozzie play it so I could watch the way it is fingered! I've struggled with the fingering of some of it, to make it smooth and easy, you have done that! I'll probably watch you play it 100 times, when I get stuck somewhere!

    Thanks again and Aloha

    Gary

  • nice job, I am still trying to learn that tune, it is one of my favorite slack key tunes! Aloha!

  • Thanks Jessica & Keep trying to learn it. I

almost gave up on it like 10 times. It'll

come eventually & when it does I'd love to

hear it. Good luck!......Aloha Bruddah Duke

  • love your vids, make more! really nice sound.

  • EHHH That was Garrins Ballbarrins Duke, I would love to learn that piece, do you know if there is tab out there for it?
