  • NO VOTES... AL VOTAR MANTOENES AL SISTEMA, AL VOTAR SIGNIFICA QUE LE ESTAS ENTREGANDO TU SER AL SISTEMA, SI EL VOTO REALMENTE CAMBIATA EL SISTEMA SERIA ILEGAL. NO SEAN "SHEPLE"

  • @sesshomarupr YOU ARE A SHEEPLE IF U KNOW WHAT IT'S MEAN... LOL

  • Fortuno for President!!!

  • @rockaddict139 agreed

  • Puerto Rico is NOT American Soil -___- Es Tierra Boricuaaaaaa ! PR Libre.

  • We should ALL seek independence from US. I live in America & I really wanna move but what I have been taught is to never leave a problem and the least you could do is to help however you can. I'm going to be a politician someday and I'll do my best to make things right. Anything is possible.

  • This is the best and most accurate documentary of Puerto Rico that I've ever seen. Puerto Rico is not the paradise cruise ships and travel agencies make it look like. Just like every other country, there's more to Puerto Rico than meets the eye. Thank you for demonstrating our fight in the University (although we lost) and the truth in Vieques.

  • OK sorry that wasn't funny, why can't we all just get along? Just don't confuse the American GOVERNMENT with the American PEOPLE. Most governments in the world are fucked up. But what do i know.

  • @juanmincia, Most of Puertoricans, (including me) try to put some excuses for the errors of their own culpability. Because of the election of some mediocre government that forgot the reason why they are there. I recognize that the USA has helped us but at a certain point through the history of our island it has taken shities decision too. My in satisfaction of these situation, its not getting along with american people because I'm very friendly and I'm not a xenophobic person, neither a racist.

  • @cabronicals, But Puertorican government it's trying to create a only one educated high class only to impose by a "Democratic Dictation" we can say because thats a (blunder for a term like that and actually it's kind of ironic or sarcastic). BTW in that way they can have control of people, because when you have an uneducated and ignorant society, you can manipulate them by trying to silences them with a little of help with their needs and keep with the corruption on the country! ;)

  • I'm not into politics and I don't understand 100% what's going on but judging by the comments, it seems like Puerto Ricans no longer like Americans. . . . . . Wanna end up like Cuba? lol

  • And then what happened...The students ended up paying the university fees, most of them arrested with their records stained, misguided by a bunch of self called "Fearless leaders"....PR university students are no more , but Bloodsucking maggots, whose belifes are based in not to join the military service, but to live out of the Federal Goverment Cow, This documentary is made by a bunch of Allah lovers from overseas trying to divert the public opinion....ALJazeera" Fuck Allah and Fuck the Islam

  • Americans use the antillean islands for experiments

  • So the moral of the story is............when ever a right government gains power, the shit hits the fan no matter where you are.Hey Puerto Rico if Teabaggers come to your island and attempt to indocrinate you just like they have done to people here, do not give them a warm welcoming!

  • puerto rico has 1k+ homecides in the past year ... if thats not 3rd world country ..you are fucking blind ... the only reason pr has health insurance and goverment benefits like that is because the keep taking on credit to keep it running ... lets see when no more credit is available ... then it will be evident that we were always a 3rd world country ... no exporting and only consuming it will collapse and its soon!!!

  • Puerto Rico is a giant butt hole getting fucked by the US. They should seek independence from the US.

  • @kalanikaiflores Excuse me what country are you from? Why we should seek independence when thousands of illegal alien come crying and begging for USA citizen ship. We are not dumb. It is not USA fault is our own leaders who cause this. I see that you live in USA. I will wait for your respond.

  • The guy below me commented 6 times and apparently he's talking alone...u mad bro?

  • in terms of lay offs the previous liberal socialist proposed 30,000 layoffs.... the republican government she the idiot reporter attacked layed of like 14,000....so the conservatives negociated with the unions and made a difficult choice way less dificult....one....

  • another stattistic for this idiot liberal reporter......85% of the homeless... people in pr....are from the mainland u.s.a....fool.... and 99% of puerto ricans have health coverage and most of them are white.....

  • on the students and hikes the liberals who ran the government from 2001-2009 bankrupted everything!!!....two if you dont want to pay get a job.......doing anything.....problem is like most young people....in the world....they think they are entitled to "free stuff" instead of studying they complain they are lucky they dont live in pakistan or libya.....

  • what makes me laugh is she says we are the only nation to contract according to who idiot women.....pakistans economy is terrorism......drugs prostitutes...and u.s. aid you think those backwards illerates in pakistan or most of india...live well..?? 95% live in misery...even china is a huge ghetto nation....and they have all the same problems....we have multiplied....by the fact that the peasants.....i have a friend who lived in the middle east china.... and india....they are poor places.

  • this video is all essentially lies........ fist of all the reporter information about contraction was wrong......our economy grew and the other economic number of most of latin america are all bull....the governments are so third world they make them up as they go along and over inflate them.........in dominican republican land of prostitutes......their principal industry is the sex trade......drugs and selling peoples organs who were murdered....thug banana republic....

  • puerto rico libre thats y calle 13 is protesting against the usa goverment in puerto rico how can usa be called the greatest bah im puertorican proud to say and for me my island is the greatest VIVA PUERTO RICO

  • Puerto Rico is the perfect example of Neo-liberalism, the polar opposite of Neo-conservatism (which is also bad). Privatization of everything, even road construction. Very sad to see. Downhill everyday.

  • @i4GS, u need to check up on the bust they did a few weeks ago. it was an island wide bust where many high level cops were discovered of corruption. There are still thousands of dirty cops down there within the drug trade, look it up, it even made headlines in pbs news. u are not wrong, it's just that they are not eating donuts, they are selling crack and heroine instead of protecting the safety of the public:)

  • $800??? Well dang I need to learn Spanish and study out there! :D

  • @SapphireDiamond19 fuck you

  • Its alot cheaper than US tutution. I dont know any student out here who can afford a $12,000 a year tutiution unless their super duper rich. No need to get rude and nasty that just goes to show how unintelligent you are and cant debate without cursing people out and acting obnoxious. Its not cute so just drop the act now

  • @SapphireDiamond19 your not puerto rican stay the fuck out of our island to suck dry a nother nation

  • Well then you stay out the United States. You have no business telling people to "get off our land" when you are busy trying to immigrate to ours. No Im not Puerto Rican but I would love to visit and maybe go to school there because their tutittion is alot cheaper than the US. And you want to talk about sucking another nation dry well look whos talking. Puerto Rico is labeled as "Welfare island" so do some research before you start talking about about another nation sucking another nation dry.

  • @SapphireDiamond19 your land please thats native american land not your you stupid craker get the fuck out of native land you have no room to talk also america made puerto rico a Welfare island craker

  • I know that. I know this is Native American land. I didnt flunk American History. And for your information, Im not White. LOL

  • wow, you are really ignorant of the island aren't you? Yes it is cheaper, because people get paid alot less, so it evens out. Its outcome is what people on the mainland will see as a tuition hike of thousands of dollars when the majority of people make well below the poverty line in. The US government has constructed publicly funded projects in every section of the island. We import more than we export because the US has used up all our resources. do you even know avg income?

  • I have a solution: The US should take away all federal grants and only allow loans for its territories, you want grants? Become a state.

  • The PNP (pro-statehood party) take over, right? they use neoliberal strategies to sell off the people's public sector to American investors, saying it's for the best to fix the deficit. The unemployment and deficit rates goes way up than before, forcing people to seek better opportunities and later on if the PNP throw PR's status to a referendum between statehood and independence, it's too obvious that they'll choose statehood. It's an economic decency trap game, whom ever has the money rules.

  • @grimofhell Those bastards are masters of sweetalk and deception. To think they convinced so many people in Puerto Rico during the 20th century that becoming an american state was possible when racism was so RAMPANT. We all know how they treated the black people (who btw had and american culture and spoke english) . What it took to convince and island full of brown people who didn't even speak english that america would welcome us with open arms leaves me in amazement

  • Government is the problem. When a people are conditioned to rely on the government to take care of them, eventually the government fails to keep its promises. People have a right to thier life, their freedom, and the pursuit of happiness. It is governments job to protect those rights. Period. It is not the place of government to provide for the people.... as we can see here, the system of socialism always fails. Now that they are cutting expenditures, everyone is worse off than before.

  • these kids obviously dont study economics. nothin is free in life. To fund the public schools, you have to get the funds somewhere. If the Puerto Rican government does not have the money to run the schools, tuition MUST be raised. And Puerto Ricos public school has NOTHING to do with the United states. All the police in this video are Puerto Rican, It was the democraticically elected governor of PR who initiated the fee hikes. What does the US have to do with any of this?

  • We either need to make Puerto Rico a state, or leave them the fuck alone. Enough is enough

  • Puerto Rico! Puerto RIcan Independence!

  • This is what happens when an empire wannabee, invades a colony of another empire, under pretext of war reparations. Puerto Rico is the ultimate lab for Yankee imperialism in the Western Hemisphere, the imperial satrapy of Macondo. President McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt wanted to install a permanent project of Anglo-Saxon social darwinism, apply the doctrines of naval imperialism of Mahan, the Monroe Doctrine and an extra-territorial version of Manifest Destiny, but it all went haywire. :-)

  • i was thar the first day

  • ALL THE US DOES IS STEAL FROM PUERTO RICO!!

  • Excellent reporting. Congrats / Dr Serafin Roldan

  • I think Humanity needs to start over...

  • This bullshit about Puerto Rico being some fragile exploited colony. Umm.... are we forgetting the fact that they get to vote on whether they want independence every several years???

  • @GGLebo23 WOW!!!! your a big ass ignorant aren't you? When the Spanish came they promised loyalty to the Indians and some Indians believed it and some didn't. Puerto Rico has the same issue some actually want to give the U.S. a try to see if they will actually help us out in the end but some dont believe they will and want independence. Also the high class of Puerto Rico(which is decreasing) doesn't see the economic problem so they think eveything is ok and decide to stay a colony.

  • @GGLebo23 Are you forgetting that our political movements have all been oppressed and closely monitored for decades. America and Spain were like bullies in the schoolyard that beat the crap out of you when No one was looking, and when people (the world) finally were looking the bully gave you the "choice"(vote) of ratting him out our being his "friend", and of course Puerto Ricans knowing the consequences (embargos) of what would happen if they snitched took the easy way out.

  • @GGLebo23 in other words dont skim when you do your homework. Independence isn't unwanted, it is feared. what else can you expect from a people who've been colonized for 500 years?

  • @VivaBoricua93 Excuses....

  • @GGLebo23 These aren't excuses you ignorant loser. PR was used and abused as a testing ground for how america would go on to continue and screw over the rest of the world.I bet if america lost the revolution you would be first in line to kiss the queens ass

  • This video made me cry, most middle and high class Puerto Ricans are unaware or refuse to see the real crisis Puerto Rico is suffering. Another serious problem in Puerto Rico that this video didn't cover was corruption, especially in the government.

  • Government is only about the Big Money Interests. not about the interests of the People.

    they are Anti Civil Rights.

and we must fight to Stay Free from the Evil Hands of the Federal Government.

We must be an Example of that Power and that Freedom.

to Cleanse our World of these Vampire's in Control.

  • Raphael at 16:08 understands the problem very well. Puerto Rico would be better off declaring independence from the USA and making it's own money. Viva un Libre Puerto Rico

  • *NOTE TO GLOBALISTS* Keep the television networks up and running in America and you could have multiple meteors striking the planet Earth and no one would notice, if you're skeptical about the process of enslaving 300 MILLION people, just "off" a celebrity in the process and America will stop thinking for a week.. it's that simple... yes they are that stupid.

  • 29 personas que vieron este video son fortuñistas

29 people who have seen the video are part of Fortuños political party

  • @thecrimeslayer true

  • The Puerto Ricans want all the pluses of being a US state but they dont want to pay for them. These people have it a hell of alot better then all the other states in the US. I know people that own houses in Puerto Rico that they inherited and they dont pay taxes they still get welfare. I say let them have their independence and get no help from the US. They are not loyal anyway and they treat all other latinos as second class citizens. Also they sell the birth certs to latinos for US entry

  • @TheCrimeslayer You sir have no idea about what you're talking about. The US deliberately perpetuates our dependence on them. Every single yearly federal budget for this island is added to our future external debt. Even if we won our independence we would owe billions to the US. And trust me, the US gets way more than they put in. Why else would they keep us like this? Another thing: people do pay local taxes here (local and federal).

  • @TheCrimeslayer If we have really become such a burden to the US then why don't they just leave us alone? Empires have profited from their colonies since long before the US became one. The "information" you provide is misleading at best and reeks of ignorance. So if you fail come by actual facts about the fiscal situation of Puerto Rico and you plan to reply, then don't even bother because I would know not to waste my time replying.

  • Thank You AlJazeera for covering issues that local and USA newscasts will never do. I am now a fan.

  • at 0:47 that the entire group of demonstrators, yeah did she mention that the Independence party get such such few votes that it actually has lost all sits in the in the government and is in danger of losing its party status. But she is right about something the republican ideology of the Governor are a real problem and is personal agenda privatization and small government are infringing into a ideological system of government which votes for party not idea...

  • Dont talk in english to these cops, most of em are morons/school rejects hahaha

  • Agree 100% with this and i am boricua

  • This is also beginning in Canada and Toronto. Witness the push for cuts, rising tuition fees and the G20 police crackdown - the largest mass arrests in Canadian history.

  • @pepedropo007 lol no

  • Greeks will be migrating to Puerto RIco soon..Fuck all oppressors..

  • Thank you Al Jazeera for revealing part of the truth. There is even a bigger monster underneath. You are very welcome to come back to P.R. and reveal more truth to the world.

  • @cceessaarr234 the bigger monster is slowly in its awakening stage and its sad that so many do not care or try to seek the truth. this was a great vid and i hope many wake up and see what it really is but its unfortunate that many follow blindly.

  • Wow, this is a great. I'm speechless.

  • Aljazeera, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for doing this documentary, this country needs criticism and objectivity. You have done us a GREAT FAVOR by showing the world of our real situation, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!

  • Thank you for doing this.

  • I think it's interesting that Cancel Miranda contracted the services of a USA alarm company, ADT.

PEOPLE, PLEASE, SHARE THIS VIDEO, TWEET IT OR SHARE THRU THE FB WALLS... PEOPLE OVER THE WORLD... THIS IS THE TRUE FACE OF THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT OF PUERTO RICO...

  • Happy 4th of July to the colony of Puerto Rico!!!

  • Don't give these greedy MOFOs any ideas, they might just do that ,piesenelagua.

  • Thank you Aljazeera for exposing the truth about PR. No other international news agency seems to have the transparency or courage demonstrated by your people. It is a gift to all the puertorriqueños in the world.

I think Rafael Cancel Miranda said it best,"...I'm a puerto rican, not a gringo...I know who I am and I don't try to be what I am not, because when you do that. You become nothing".

  • Regardless if we like it or not, Puerto Rico is part of the United States. Though have not assimilated to the Metropolis, we still are. Just like the ABC islands are to the Netherlands. Unfortunately, we have not accepted such. I have to, with respect, disagree with gaznu. We might be a nation, like many within the Mainland, Hawaii, and Alaska. The focus of this report seems very accurate to me and how poverty has been ravishing the archipelago with these disastrous Republican policies.

  • Of course, Puerto Rico, with the highest unemployment, school failure, welfare recipients and murder rates, must remain a secret for the whole world.

  • The US innoculated Puerto Ricans with cancer cells. This is a fact. It was carried out by Dr. Cornelius Rhodes. The US Navy has used depleted uranium ordnance in the island of Vieques, where cancer rates have increased significantly. Agent orange was tested in our tiny rain forest of El Yunque. On top of that, neoliberalism is now being tested by our governor, a republican party token hispanic who will become an important figure in a party in dire need of minority votes.

  • By the way, los Republicanos son' Neo-Conservativistas', no 'Neo-Liberalistas'.

Si no deciden, nada cambiara.

  • The first corruption in PR is the governmen,it does not matter which team is; they don't have regulating laws guide by an intelligent group that care about theier own people!! It's sad that the Puertortican are so stupid n believe is a future with any corrupt government in PR! Wake up n STOP thinking with ur ASS!!

  • The UPR student need 2 cut the ridiculous riots n let other students that have good intentions 2 studied go 4 it with this commotion!! Tuitions are raise every where in the world n it got 2 be paid by students 4 good education! Get real n go 2 school 2 do the right thing! Puertorricans r so dome it's embarace n degrade 4 the hispanic race!!

  • It's so sad that the Puertorricans are so idiots, lazy, dome, narrow mind, uneducated with reality, all 1 way n interesting in reciving with out willing 2 give!!!! It has become a 3rd world country, brutos when US has giving the opportunity 2 become a USA state and PR has reject it?? Why?? They want 2 stay in that missery situation! Repeating my self stupid n dome people!! US should cut all help giving 2 PR n let then eat their sheet n dirt!! PR don't have resources 2 subtaing their self n woul

  • Further more, the minute USA pulls out Cuba and vemezuela and the idiots of nicaragua will try to move in.. They just insatisfied lot there PR's. They bit the hand of the one who feeds them. I bet that 90% of those protesters are in financial aid! and they acting like is thier money!

  • @Ganzu. No one said in this report that puerto Rico is a State, she just said 2 times that it is a TERRITORY. And tellme somthing smart guy, what means does the Puerto Ricans have to achieve full indepence and support themselves as a nation? Baby, the minute the US pulls out the welfare, the Social Seciuty and the aids for those students que are protesting there, Every one will run to the USA mainland..Puerto Ricans are a lazy lot. They talk about indepence and crap but they wont do

Democracia Real Ya! Un abrazo. El pueblo unido jamás será vencido.

  • WHERE IS THE PUERTO RICAN PRIDE? THIS IS WHAT PUERTO RICO HAD BECOME A PARADISE FOR DRUG DEALERS AND TECATOS. A LOT OF WAVING THE FLAG WITH PRIDE BUT FOR WHAT? IT IS TIME TO TAKE CARE OUR BUSINESS SINCE OUR LEADERS ARE WORTHLESS. THIS TASK BELONG TO THE PEOPLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM CAUSE BY OURSELVES. NOBODY FAULT ONLY US, WE HAD FAIL OUR CHILDREN AND OURSELVES. IT IS TIME FOR A REVOLUTION AGAINST THE DRUG DEALERS AND CRIMINAL WHO ARE CONTROLLING OUR LIFE IN PUERTO RICO.

  • wow....this is NOTHING BUT THE PURE TRUTH.....

  • Puerto RIco is not the US. And it is extremely tendentious to portray Puerto Rico as such. Puerto Rico is an is an Island Nation that is held as a colony by the US. One cannot portray the condition of the Puerto Rican people by misrepresenting this issue. And Statehood means the apotheosis of colonization not freedom. Freedom-economic as well as political- can only be achieved with Independence.

  • @guaznu I think you mean antithesis, a counter-proposition that denotes a direct contrast to the original proposition. Not apotheosis, the exaltation of a subject to divine level.

  • @Unclesamslair I think the person meant apotheosis. In this specific case, statehood would not provide a contrast to the Free Associated State (Estado Libre Asociado). It would simply be a different name for the same dynamic. One can make the argument that the people can still retain their identities, a la Hawaii or Alaska. But, last I checked, the conditions native Hawaiians and Alaskans live in are abysmal compared to the white settlers'.

  • @guaznu They are more than free to vote for independence. Tell them to quit voting for status of a territory. They're doing it to themselves. Most Americans could care less if Puerto Rico was a territory, state, or independent.

  • @PhiloAmericana true, however, the goverment wont allow us to go independent, if we vote for that, we'll get invaded once more lol

  • @hijodepuuu I don't believe that at all.

  • @PhiloAmericana The dumber they are, the easier it is for leaders to manipulate them, thats the way they want it :) , they wanna crush all our civil rights, so they'll do whatever it takes, its just the way it is down here period.

  • @guaznu we atre trying, or do you really believe puerto ricans are republican? do you really think you do not control us? its a puppet govement, ruled by corporations who dont pay taxes and send the money back to the US, we work for you, and we dont even charge

  • @guaznu Agreed, but what are the implication of such independence would it be a incredible boom to the economy or will it be a downgrade of the economy. Will such a freedom in political decision and choice bring any differences in political thinking or government administration. Such has to be discussed in such a way has to not represent ones self idea of perfection, but in the sense of what is best for all not what is best for does that believe in a different thing than the other...:)

  • @nanky432 If they had independence the leaders would get rich just like every other poor country. The leaders take everything from the people to sate their greed. I am tired of them getting everything and not having the same laws that every US state has. They get welfare and they can still own their family property. They pay nothing for education now so I say give them independence let the people be just like every other island. And stop new ones from come and bringing drugs to the US

  • @guaznu here here! The escalation of the precarious situation in PR is an OUTRAGE! The direct cause of the record high murder and unemployment rates (and all subsequent social conflicts) is the OPPRESSIVE POLITICAL RELATIONSHIP PUERTO RICO HAS BEEN HELD UNDER FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS. We seem to be misled into thinking the US have been a savior and a provider and that is FALSE. We ARE a third world country, we ARE a colony and it's the UNITED STATES FAULT, and it's about damn time someone says it.

  • Why don't they show the semester before that when the studens barricaded all the entrances to the university making it so they couldn't give class for a whole month? Not thinking of students about to graduate, or about the teacher and jobs of the thousand in all there recints across the island, just thinking of their social ideals, using "The future" as a pretext for their riots.

  • @dreamgzer Why dont they show when the police tore apart the university gates? Why dont they show when undercover police started vandalizing the university to discredit the student movement? Why dont they show all the police brutality in the UPR, Capitolio, Ave. Universidad, Villas del Sol & Esperanza etc.? Why dont they show when the police destroyed the windows of various cars near the Capitolio? Why dont they show when Rectora Guadalupe lied under oath about Waldemiro Soto Velez? Answer that!

  • @dreamgzer Are ignorant kids that all that want is a coup d'tat, and they don't know what they are getting the country into...(More bloodshed than we have already)...but oh well...Sigan llamando la atencion, ignorantes.

  • GOBIERNO ABUSADOR Y CORRUPTO!!!!!

  • @KADAMASOUL votan*

  • @piesenelagua brother cuando fue que eso paso???

  • @piesenelagua Puerto Rico has ,more from America and given nothing back. The people enjoy all the same rights and benefits as every american and they dont have the same laws. They sell the birth certs to South Americans ,they import drugs ,they have gangs all over the US. I say kick them to the curb let them take care of them selves. The also look down on all other Latinos like they are better.

Puerto Rico is a bubble society used to observe change in social behavior under different circumstances. We are a controlled experiment.

  • 21 peoples that watched this video voted for Luis Fortuño in 2008 and they will probably vote for him in 2012.

  • “I’m a Puerto Rican, I’m a Caribbean, I’m a Latin American none of my grey hair is a gringo hair, I’m not a victim because I believe I myself I’m I know who I’m am I know who I am and I not pretend to be what I am not, because when you pretend to be what you are not you become nothing”
