anyone that has ever owned a (project boat) especially if its their first sailboat has probably experienced something like this. Sailing is NO joke and things do have to be in working order, and when there not life on the boat is not fun. What kind of boat is that a columbia?? i like the layout of the boat. This voyage is surely not the only one that has gone sour. Most people are to busy complaining instead of taping so we dont see many videos like this. THIS IS GONNA BE A NICE SAIL LOLOL
@newpage123 It is a 50ft Formosa Ketch.. we were gone 7 days and only made it 300 miles offshore and back.. The sixth day had no recordings as it was pretty bad, 50mph winds and large seas but flattened out on the last day. I captain a Beneteau 49 and we can average nearly 200 miles per day in comparison.
kew vid. I was wondering, did the lines that went overboard get the shft? if not I think I would have tried to get them out of the water asap..lol. my luck, it would have been in the prop before I could get out of the cockpit. lol. could you have climbed the mast steps assisted by the jib haylard and repaired the main's rigging? on my maiden voyage, I had my main get stuck. one of the trucks broke and got jammed during a NorEaster in the Cheesi bay, and I couldn't find a place to anchor out. .
I think you did the right thing by returning. If the boat is not ready for a voyage like this, it's important to be on the same page as a crew and the crew is part of the boat. If there's conflict, you will be spinning your wheels and nothing will be accomplish.
Hands down the best video on YT in regards to sailing. This is what sailing is really about. I have been on too many sailing trips where everything went right. How amazing to share this experience..thank you so much!!!
And the Captain is a man of few words, but he says so much!

I wanted to chime in here. We sail the Hawaiian waters and would never deliver this boat anywhere, maybe we might do the bouy run to keep it a liveaboard in the Ala Wai Marina. You are fortunate to be alive.
hang in there...dont let the negative comments bother you...you made a great "real" video of the journey. That alone (and its good for insurance puposes if required had worse happened;-) proves it aint always fun.
Actually, I am a boat Capt. and sail all over the Atlantic and Pacific on boats that are kept up and in good condition. It took 7 days to go 300NM offshore and back. I would like to see how you would react sleeping above 75 gallons of fuel sloshing around the floorboards for a week. Next time you want to talk some smack about something go try it yourself and make a vid at the same time so we can all talk shit about you from the comfort of our fat asses on dry land!
@mauiboy86 Bro, I would never have even left and wonder why you did. Perhaps you were being Nice and attempting to humor some real old salt who thought his leaky teaky was seaworthy? Glad you made it back safe. When I need a Captain to run fron from Miami to Bimini and beyound it will be on a new Benne.. If you run a charter business- pls leave a link for me.. Thanks.. Thinking about a run soon..
@mauiboy86 i whole heartedly agree. i am highly motivated by the wit and confidence of the old salt and family atmosphere herein this video. "adventure and gain." - deadliest catch first season Aj McMellon - allopenwaters@att.net .
WHOA!! That looks like a friggin nightmare!! This is the kinda story that usually starts out in a bar and then ends up with the poor shanghai'd main character a hundred miles offshore in a leaky old tub with a maniacal skipper Glad you made it out alive.
This is cracking me up. Good for you for trying. This is a good video on what not to do I think. I always have to remember Old Salts always seem to know it all when some really don't. I love the comment about the depth finder not working. LMAO..
i guess after 30 years of going to sea, I am just picky about the condition of my craft. If you cant afford to maintain it, you cant afford the boat. At least sell it to someone who will make the necessary repairs to make it seaworthy and maintain it. A good example is when the mainsail halyard was stuck, where is his bosuns chair to go up the mast and free it? Again if you cant afford to maintain it, sell it.
Sounds like the boat needs a lot of work. I would never take my boat to sea in that condition. I wonder when was the last time he had a survey done? Need wood replaced, barnacles cleaned, instruments repaired, the engine needs a new freeze plug it sounds like. Not too reliable. Also, if your powerplant is inoperable, you at least want the sails and rigging in good condition, thats not the case either. I dont believe the Coast Guard would deem that vessel seaworthy.
Actually, I would have fixed each and every problem when I found them but the hard headed 80 year old owner wouldn't let me. He tried plugging the knockout hole in the exhaust manifold for 2 days with a piece of metal and finally gave up. It took me five minutes to fix it. I thought I was in pretty good spirits considering the situation. I just wanted to document it in case we never made it back or someone died.

I think they turned back to get this guy off the boat. Sound's like he whined about every little problem without offering to help fix the problems.
