  • that re-entry looks a bit dicey and hap hazzard lets hope it doesnt become another glitch like Observer or Polar Lander

  • Will the footage be broadcasted? It seems unfair if it isn't.

  • Seems like a dangerous and expensive way to land a perfectly good rover, IMO.

  • @Historianization yea NASA said they couldnt land it like the other ones with a parachute and airbags because of the weight of the thing its the size of a small car so they came up with this

  • Forever Alone

  • ↓ 動画みてね☆すごいいいよ♪

  • Meanwhile on Mars...

  • watching this for school :D

  • THIS IS PROOF RIGHT HERE!!!! Aliens are filming us! how else could we get this video? Now we just need to find out who the aliens are sending these videos to so that we can trap one next time they make a delivery!

  • So this rover doesn´t use solar panels like the Spirit and Opportunity. Why they changed it ?

  • @new1271 Nuclear power lasts longer.

  • @new1271 Oh, and it will also work fine during dust storms, or during the winter.

  • Have there been any advancements in transmission technologies in that a video stream can be provided to NASA by MSL?

  • @exoxe The Mast Camera, or Mastcam, will take color images and color video footage. Mastcam can take high-definition video at 10 frames per second and has an internal data buffer for storing several hours of video footage for transmission to Earth.

  • Why was that array of solar cells mounted on a separate module and not on the back of the decent stage? Some thrusters will help with the steering (sideways movement) during entry, but the heat shield is solid, which means Curiosity will be "blind" and thus have no real steering during decent to assure an accurate landing. Is this remark correct?

  • @oomblikkies what solar cells? the rover uses uranium as fuel

  • @oomblikkies the solar cells are just to power the computers/provide electricity for the spacecraft

  • JPL i love you :)

  • I hope I'm alive when/if humans make the next big discovery in space.

  • It seems that Mars it's the red version of Tatooine

  • @Stevenx01 Jabba lives underground.

  • incredible

  • I love Curiosity on Mars!

  • We need to do more of this and less of attacking and occupying countries that posed no threat. If this thing only costs 2.5 billion, then we could do one like every other day. Lets send one to Europa with a heat sinker so we can see what is in the oceans there. The ISS is great, but boring. The Mars rover is trully great fun!!

  • @PirateSygnal But but but....we need to spend untold trillions on new fangled death machines to reign death from above....cause, like the stealth aircraft of today are soooo passe. Not to mention the hundreds of billions spent per year on "dark" projects. If I were American I'd be pissed. Space is cool.... War is not.

  • It seems that Nasa is slowly changing its own concept about mars. Even though an animation, It´s already possible appreciate some green on the soil and gray in the sky. No more red only.

  • feels like a mako mission

  • I'm pretty sure it activated its mining lasers at around 8:00

  • What's different about this rover from the other ones that were already sent to Mars?

  • @MegaOverCross Start with the fact it’s the size of a Mini Cooper. ;)

  • Was that an alien in 05:58 ?? Why did it prefer to analyse rocks?!

  • Great video, thanks for sharing. What an amazing bit of kit, almost science fiction. It's easy to forget curiosity is actually the size of a car against that vast barren landscape.

I would like to know the reason for the pits in each of the six wheels, is it something to do with sand build-up?

  • why this rovers are not made to move faster?

  • @TheDroplett Why would it need to? :I

  • Rarefied atmosphere on Mars, so the parachute cannot be soft landing.

To mitigate the impact, NASA decided to use the jet stream.

  • 10:42

Of cause it had to look like a face (:

  • I'm curious.. what is the entry shield made out of? i see it's yellow-ish on the outside.. kevlar?

  • maybe im blind, but are there solar panels on the rover?

  • @Jiaxis The rover operates on a kind of on-board nuclear supply and does not rely on solar energy.

  • @ManDudeYeah Oh okay, thanks. How long do you think it will last with the nuclear supply?

  • @Jiaxis It last about 1 Mars year, so about 25 Earth months.

  • @ManDudeYeah Cool. But why did they decide to go with a nuclear-powered system? (I don't know much about cost in solar vs nuclear, power output, lifespan, reliability, etc.)

  • @Jiaxis Well, previous rovers have utilized the solar panels and such, but the amount of solar energy available on the surface of Mars isn't totally feasable. NASA's rovers have always used the nuclear power system but I think this time it's nothing but nuclear. Nuclear power is extremely efficient and they have managed to put enough "juice" in it to last for quite some time.

  • @Jiaxis It's nuclear powered.

  • Wait...there aren't clouds on mars!

  • man i sure hope everything goes as planned

  • A Space Odyssey watch?v=hU5Lt-Aqrv4&

@ min Seven:thirty-five is most interesting

  • If there is life on Mars, I wonder what they would be thinking if they saw Curiosity land. :P

  • @Gravolux If Mars is anything like Earth they'd probably steal the hub caps .

  • @JonnyUnderrated

    Lawl.

  • 'Tis amazing what science has achieved over the years. I am proud to be a human being, in this case.

  • Science, bitches...

  • When the batteries run down (NOT the RTG), how long will it take the RTG to recharge them?

  • at this point all we can do is hope the thing doesn't smack the ground and make a pancake on the martian surface

  • looks easy in animation...but will it really happen that way lol...well see soon I guess

  • Very awesome; I hope the mission is a huge success. Question though: If this thing tips over, is it screwed like a turtle or can it get back up?

  • @B0ombastix No. However, Curiosity is designed with a wide wheelbase (distance between the wheels) that gives her inherent stability on uneven terrain. Also, the rover is programmed through its "fault protection limits" in its hazard avoidance software to avoid exceeding tilts of 30 degrees during its traverses.

  • i thought it was supposed to go underground and explore whats below???

  • @sk8boardn101 PSSH, it would if NASA weren't so vehemently underfunded (because apparently and banks are more important).

  • @sk8boardn101 Curiosity will explore the surface of Mars. She will analyze samples drilled from rocks or scooped from the ground, investigating whether conditions have been favorable for microbial life and for preserving clues in the rocks about possible past life.

  • boy, those scientists sure know how to make a thrilling video.

  • I wish I could play a mars exploration videogame just like this with realistic missions.

  • @ 3:15 the hover crane is just like WHOA, THIS ISN'T URANUS, I'M OUT. *Zooms off back into space*

  • amazing animations!

  • Too much has too be just right for entry and landing. As much as I want it to go well, I do not think it will! I pray it does though.

  • i'm still saveing money to buy one of those :#

  • U.S.A is the Best !

    =)

  • so inspirational, thanks from hungary

  • Jaw-dropping awe if they manage to pull this one off without a major mishap. Best of luck!

  • I wondered where the calibration targets for the ChemCam were. I see them now, under the UHF antenna! :-)

  • This animation is amazing

  • it would have been cool if fuel wasn't a problem and the rover could just hover about all the time :)

  • @andreirocks1992 bring on the Mars Helicopter!

  • The landing Sequence is quite complicated , why does the module just flies off , ? does it have anny other use ?

  • @Chrustillant This EDL is more complicated than either MER or Phoenix. It uses what's call a sky crane. The eight-engined descent stage slows down the fall, while the sky crane lowers the rover gently to the surface. The descent stage flies off to a safe distance and crashes, Its job is done. IF it works, the same method will be used for future landers, provided they get funded.

  • @Chrustillant The descent stage will only be used during the landing. Once the rover senses it is on the surface, we will use explosive bolt cutters to server the connection. At this point the descent stage will throttle up and land a safe distance away.

  • @JPLnews is this method of landing meant to eliminate any possible contamination caused by the retrorockets?

  • @JPLnews Are there any plans to perhaps examine the descent stage crash/landing site?

  • @JPLnews Is the rover lowered to prevent damage from kicking up sand?

  • 05.56 sec ????

  • @Vanya7831 It's showing rocks falling down from the side of the slope and creating dust.

  • Where is sand protection?

  • @KillerJoeFIN Curiosity's body is called the warm electronics box (WEB for short). This keeps the rover's computer and electronics protected and temperature-controlled.

  • apparently they spend like 2.5bil dollars on it O_o

  • @vasyasol The total cost for the rover, launch vehicle, all science and engineering is $2.5 billion.

  • @vasyasol 2.5 billion dollars VERY well spent, sir. I'd rather shell out a large percent of our money on this kind of cool shit rather than bleeding our resources fighting frivolous wars. These kinds of projects unify nations.

  • @ManDudeYeah well said! :D

  • @vasyasol and how much do they spend in one day in the middle east? derp

  • attack from the Earth?

  • Look at Mars in real colours! I was really surprised. Just write in YouTube search "Mars, as it is" and watch that short film.

In the current movie it is intentionally showed in a false way.

  • @MirimeIsiliel The reason the flag looks a shade off in that video is because it’s being viewed in different light, and because everything’s covered in dust. That’s exactly how things would look if you were standing on Mars next to the rover. If for some odd reason you really want to see what Mars would look like under fluorescent light, just grab a photo of the rover immediately after a cleaning event and set the white balance to one of the white stripes on the flag.

  • @WulfTheSaxon (Well, ignoring your ability to compensate for changes in ambient light, which is why you don’t have a white balance button on the side of your head… You’d probably get used to the orange light pretty fast, and things would look greenish blue if you teleported back to Earth all of a sudden.)

  • 1 hour, for that hole, omg, but whatever, this is AMAZING

  • 1:36-1:42 What is the canyon seen on the surface? I assume it's accurate.

  • Forever alone

  • Why does the spacecraft performs this small manoeuvre from 11th second until 18th second ???

  • @VangelisAthens That is the point where it is above earth. I'm guessing that the maneuver is putting the craft at the right angle towards mars;allowing the craft to go into its "cruise stage."

  • @Hvnlydemon Maybe that is the case... I just did not expect such degree of accuracy in so early stage! I supposed this move could be done later on (when entering the atmosphere of Mars) with one of the small thrusters

  • @VangelisAthens Yes, I assumed the same.. guess they have their own reasons for such precise changes before separation.

  • I love this! It's so cool and intriguing! Doesn't the rover look cute chugging along and doing its thing, all alone?

I'm excited to see some great pictures and video on the surface! Although I hear there's no audio accompanying the video... that's a shame.

  • Millions of dollars into this, and they still put in a 5-fps camera....

  • @GIANNITHEBEST1 Think about the distance that all those pictures have to travel in, at a low data rate. It is rather impressive that they will even be able to accomplish this at the frame rate....

  • @epicuniversal ya I have never though of it that way... :P

  • muy lenta la conquista, necesitamos insectos voladores robot y es espias ,carabajos para facilitar el suelo y aire.. no saldra bien con el perro robot

  • Countdown to landing here: mars.jpl.nasa.gov

  • this feels me that it is so sad to live alone :(

  • Isn't it interesting that we have the technology, scientists and capacity to send a human being to Mars, and we just don't do it?

  • @ukilic86 I think so

  • 2:13 transformers movie begin!

  • In Malaysia the abrome hates american because evolution kills their ya yah big god .... the words that dropped from heaven and propel what others say terrorism to the 1st world, hero hero Mr.Osama BN Ladin to the 3rd world. The only thing that stops abrome hatred towards white men is mat salleh allowed physically, mentally, emotionally round the clock tortures to only one person....Unrecognized Asylum Seeker to the World.

  • @MrAsylee Piss off towelhead

  • Absolutely fantastic. I love western technology!

  • @killerk32 You are fucking sick. I translated your message and you said

"Will soon establish terrorist cells on the surface of Mars. Then Mars will of the people fear the wrath of God all

The mighty. Must burn the Jews what they did on Mars. My towel is filled with feces. Please come down in my beard."

    fuck you towelhead

  • As soon as this thing hits Mars its just going to do what it wants and have fun. Go Johnnie 5!

  • we should... take one of the rovers already on mars to video tape this rover landing on mars

  • @Pinesol23

    Nope.avi

Opportunity is at Meridiani Planum, and Curiosity is going to land at Gale Crater, on the other side of the planet. However, if the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is in the correct place at the correct time, it may be able to capture the parachute descent, like it did with Phoenix in 2008.

    Hope this helped!

  • I was at the launch! It was Amazing!!!

  • lol all that wasted use of tecnoligy just to sample some dirt . i wouldnt put my money on this

they should send a real landing party

  • @apicinema you dont evan understand that they take the dirt to scan it for life idiot

  • 人ってすごいんだなーと思いました\(^o^)/

    星はよく見るので、火星も見ます。

    ・・・あんなトコまで行ったんですね。

  • Fantastic animation sequence, well done. The sky-crane part is amazing, lets hope it all works as planned.

ps in the distance at 05.59 - is that the crashed sky crane/shute ?

  • Woah, Curiosity has a laser gun eye? NASA, you've done it again!

  • This reminds me of Wall-E ^.^

  • Last time I checked this page is for the recent Mars rover and not for religious flaming on both sides, go to some forum or chat for that, here you won't change the other people's opinion anyway.

  • @Vlakpage Thank you! Finally someone finally knows that ppl that do this shit are retarded

  • I really hope it al works out for this thing, have my doubts about the rocket landing system.

They usually crash even on this planet.

  • @crazybart21 yeah but mars has a much thinner atmosphere and less gravity so it could work out. i also have doubts for the landing system, its holding over a tom of weight and millions of $ worth of info and money.

  • wow america are the so intellingent,

on tv i see only stupid actors,

    fat people

Harvard doesnt belong there, they people need more oprah or dre phil show.

its shame such great work done be dumbass country. America is more for war or conquering, steeling oil from IRAK, Libie, killing people thats the status of america. Scientific doesnt belong there. I hope some day someone will raise and show them some humanity and learn them what purpose of live is.

  • @ne61ma americans didnt wage war on random countries, bush did without our consent. Not all Americans are dumbasses (*ahem* Steve Jobs, BIll Gates) either and not all are fat. I am one of America's international swimemrs and I have 3% body fat and I'm pretty damn sure you're fatter than me. And I'd like to hear what your shitty government thinks the purpose of life is. All Americans care about is the pursuit of happiness and I have to say if you don't agree, you're comitting hypocrisy.

  • @MrBomb72 i am a european and i see alot of people in america dieng, your goverment think only in his pocket (wallstreet) you people are retard, its to bad that people like america have such great names: Bill gate, steve jobs, Benjamin frankelin, Colombus, Abraham lincoln, Your people empty in head no brains, only thinking FOOD,mcdonalds, Burgerking, the youse you like a slave. Your nothing but slave working for the name of america. Its to bad we euro have are pride to bad to bad

  • @ne61ma quite obviously you do not know how to read english... The obese population in America is only 3% and the rest are like me and actually keep fit and smart. I am 13 and scored 2390 on college SAT (max being 2400) and the youngest swimmer in history to swim internationally. And I believe that Europe is the one that caused the world debt crisis? I'm sorry but you have some grammar to improve on and you should probably lose your French Fries Fat too lol.

  • @MrBomb72 fuck off who care your score is 2390. You talk shit did you know that. Europe cause crisis ahaha no america goverment caused crisis for europe, WAR every country s fucked be america!

Ok and your youngest swimmer go fuck your self ok. French Fries he why dont you go right in the ASS of bush maybe you can swim there and be the youngest in history ahhah yeah right you 13 ahah and i am obama.

  • @ne61ma If you had an ounce of neoencephalon you would know that I am one of six that scored 2390, I was on the news. I'm still telling you, don't talk shit about America. You haven't lived here before. I lived in the UK for one year and it is not much different from the USA, if not worse. And about the swimming, I'll be sure to tell IOC at the London Olympics what you said. They have a database that tracks IP addresses straight to the address. See you in community service in August! :DD

  • @MrBomb72 Prove it bitch

Prost ^. ^

  • @MrBomb72 i see such great technology but the people liening al the time!

Go research your country the great eningineers are european, we have such great and what is america people they are different.New York belongs to Netherlands, (new Amsterdam) but unfortanly you guys took whats not from you, example afghanistan, libie, irak, somalie, siry, Maybi iran. No shame no nothing The world belongs to everybody dumbass you heard that all of you are stupid, idiots , donkeys with out brain

  • Hey.... THERE IS NO SOUND IN SPACE!

  • I get it: you have to make the video interesting. And once you're in the Martian atmosphere, go ahead and go all Battlefield 3 with your bad self. But could you at least make the space sounds subtle?

  • @barrylen Would removing the sound help illustrate the launch, cruise, and landing sequences? Of course not. This is for entertainment purposes, and sound is suitable for that.

  • Thought this was a vid of mars , GOD ?!? Didnt see nothing but sand myself , If u saw something else , theres help 4 that aswell , Perhaps a white room with soft walls and a jacket with long arms

  • Does anyone know what the popping noises at 1:49 are?

  • @museblock Those might have been the bolts that were holding the bottom on, because the bottom pops off a couple of second after. Just a guess though.

  • @museblock Explosive bolts

  • @museblock That's the ballast being removed after reentry (You can see it coming off if you look closely). The ballast is used to give the spacecraft a correct center of gravity. Once the parachute is opened the ballast is no longer needed.

  • I hope the real one won't noisy like this... :D

  • AS OF TODAY IT HAS TRAVELED 32,000,000 MILES IN 19 DAYS.. SAY 1,685,000 MILES PER DAY. HERE'S THE QUESTION! HOW MANY DAYS TO COMPLETE ITS 352,000,000 MILE JOURNEY. ANSWER: 209 DAYS..... NOW THINK ABOUT THIS FOR A SEC! 3,2,1...... 209 DAYS EQUALS 7 MONTHS AND 2 WEEKS ROUGHLY (I'M ROUNDING OFF) FROM TODAYS DATE 12/15/2011. BASED ON MY CALCULATION IT SHOULD BE ARRIVING END OF JULY OR VERY BEGINNING OF AUGUST, 2012. I'M HOPING THEY DON'T HIDE ANY INFORMATION OR FINDINGS........THANKS

  • @NASA, As of 9 a.m. PST (noon EST) on Dec. 14, the spacecraft will have traveled 31.9 million miles (51.3 million kilometers) of its 352-million-mile (567-million-kilometer) flight to Mars.

  • I KNOW HOW TO CALCULATE AND VERIFY CURIOSITY'S ARRIVAL DATE. BASED ON THE INFORMATION GIVEN BY NASA

THAT'S IF ACCELERATION REMAINS CONSTANT! MY THEORY IS THE CAPSULE GAINS SPEED AS IT GAINS MOMENTUM, CORRECT ME IF I'M WORNG....THANKS

  • NASA should get more funding. If NASA does not get enough funding, then the ESA, RKA, CSA, and JAXA may overtake them. The small percentage of the budget NASA gets is ridiculously small. NASA's missions are aimed at peace. Why can't people just be peace-loving and cut back on military spending.

  • The NASA is trying to go and live on other planets to run away from CHUCK NORRIS!

  • If NASA/JPL can pull this off....

Greatest engineering since they flew Cassini/Huygens threw (and in between) the rings of Saturn. Maybe the best probe ever made.

  • They launched a spacecraft to the jupiter at 5 august 2011 arrive at july 2016! yes :D

  • China.

  • ahhh A UFO! according to martians

  • amazing animation.let s hope it all goes well for curiosity.i thought pathetic religious comments would be inevitable.grow up!Well done NASA,they re closer to the heavens that you are!

  • let me ask you something. Its an either-or question. Might take two posts to finish. Now you have to choose either option. Because in reality thats what we truly have (an option of Him or not Him). Even being neutral is choosing , not Him. Okay. Here is the question.

You are walking down the street and come to two houses on the right side. You are very hungry and thirsty and must quench your thirst like now. Even your ribs are sticking our, your stomach is bloated from hunger. cont.
