I believe the "Orange bobber" is used to clean the ice off the line as it gets spooled, like a squeege.? the line is clean from debree and winds on to reel a little less wet preventing freeze up. I also think that you may not be allowed to open water fish during ice fishing season(it has to be thru a hole) or because you cant cast the line into open water because you would be reeling in ice chunks everytime.??

@thonevan there are a number of reasons... some people put their line through them and allow them to droop so when they get a bite they ride up if they aren't jigging. Others use them to make their lines more visible ( especially during snow squalls) since when you ice fish you use thin line (usually 6 or less lbs) on a small rod. They also chip the ice away from your line (as well as keep your line from freezing to the rod) when the temps are low..

You guys are doing this all wrong.Here's how to ice fish correctly : Cut a circular opening in the ice. Open a can of Green Giant Peas and place them about an inch apart around the edge of the opening. When the fish comes up to take a pea....kick him in the icehole.

Usually they are called "rainbows" when caught in the lake and "steelhead" when caught in the creek or river after they move in to spawn.
