I wrote you once Mate, and still I have to always comment, I love this song this is the song that I have chosen for my Handfasting thank you so much for this love ballad. May Danu always bless you.
this song is the reason south americans call white people gringo, because of the Scottish colonial settlers singing green grow the rashes, started in Mexico i think.
could be altho I think they mean the other song with the sane title..."I'll sing you one o etc" There are also other possible explanations given on Wikipedia eg green uniforms "greens go"
amor ch'a nullo amato amar perdona ...(Dante) :) se R.B: amava così sinceramente le donne è naturale che fosse corrisposto, anch'io lo amerò per sempre ;))
In Burns' day the word for rushes was rashes...however it's such a slight difference it doesn't really matter.....if you look on Youtube its about half in half rashes to rushes when folks sing it
As usual, Kev, your version is one of the best on youtube--thanks for keeping this great Burns resource going.

Hi...I don't do tabs but the chords are fairly straightforward
C Dm F C Am Dm Em Am
I have a capo on 2 which puts this into D

Beautiful version of a beautiful song. I often hear this song sung by a woman. Do you happen to know why that is? Thanks :)
theseventhspecialist 3 years ago
thanks....I have no idea why it is so popular with the women singers. I believe it is a man's song.
keltickev27 3 years ago
Folks, you need to remember that Burns was writing in Ayrshire Scots and so it reflects the pronunciation of his time and area.
It's like the song "Corn Rigs", where the word 'barley' often rhymes a lot better if pronounced 'bairley'.
Also, don't get this song mixed up with the other song known as "Green grow the rushes-o" ("I'll give you one-o, green grow the rushes oh")

It's rushes, not rashes.

A nice version, especially toward the end when you relaxed your voice a little more.

Thanks for the feedback. A good song, not sung often enough.
