First off I've never liked Pavarotti. I saw him in the early 80s in "Rigoletto" and the whole production was horrible. I also saw Domingo in "Tosca" and it wasn't any better. I never saw Carreras in an opera (I think he was the only decent singer of the three, but even then overrated), but I did see one of the original three tenors concerts in the 90s with a couple friends. We all left disappointed, especially after paying hundreds of dollars for shitty seats.
As for purists, maybe the ones in the "Diamond horseshoes" of Caruso's time wouldn't like a singer like Tucker, but I have no idea about the modern ones and Tucker was popular for almost 30 years. I am "old fashioned," if you will, in the way that I prefer singers who keep the high Cs part of the music and not an entity unto itself, as someone once put it. Corelli might have also been given a hard time because he couldn't even sing properly in his native Italian, let alone other languages.
I spent 20 minutes typing a message about "my ideal opera singer" and it didn't go through. I'm not typing it again, but I will say my collection includes Gigli, Peerce, Tucker, Albanese, Schipa, Kirsten, Moffo, Pinza, Peters, Merrill, Stevens and many others who I consider to be the best of all time. I believe there are singers just as good as them out there but they aren't encouraged to sing as they were years ago and they're probably plumbers or are picking up your garbage instead of singing.
carreras, the only decent singer of the three? i think otherwise- his voice sounds very restrained and sounds as though it's going to corrupt everytime. his singing isn't so smooth.
I said he was decent; he was by no means prefect. Early I could enjoy his recordings, but later never listened to anything by him after seeing him with the three tenors or Sarah Brightman. Otherwise I maybe heard a broadcast or two with him 20 or 30 years ago but who remembers that. Apparently he's still performing but I wouldn't see him. Only American tenors seem to be able to sing well past 60.
Oh wait, I never personally saw him with Sarah Brightman (but unfortunately did with the three tenors)! You couldn't pay me to see Sarah Brightman. I just meant that once I found out he sang with her I never listened to him again.
What really suprises me that a purist like you would be a Richard Tucker fan. Purists usually aren't known for their good taste...so why would a textbook purist, who hates "overemotional, not subtle enough singers, etc." be a fan of Tucker?
I disagree, "purists" are known for their taste especially since they dislike singers like the three tenors and others like Andrea Bocelli or Sarah Brightman. And I've never in my life heard of a "purist," or any real opera lover, who dislikes Richard Tucker; that would just make the person an idiot. Maybe if you listen to this Hvorostovsky's attempt at Mozart arias it would leave a bad taste in your mouth for him as it has for me. How you could compare this utter shit to Merrill or Warren?
Bravo, Dmitri! It is just beautiful!

@OperaSnob Opera singers have always done cross over stuff even from the times of Enrico Caruso, a real purist would know this history.

Ahem...care to elaborate, Mr. Purist?
