They aren't from katanas.. they are a mix of a sword and a spear, and it is from the zhanmadao, which the katana is also from, making them kinda like sister weapons
Can one really control the broadsword with one hand with the wrist contorted so if the blade meets strong resistance? And why does the blade clatter so loosely within the hilt? Please explain, I don't mean to offend, I merely want understanding.
the Koreans went from a straight sword (very similar to the jian or gim commonly associated with Chinese martial arts) to a curved blade about the same time the Japanese did as structural it was better suited to fighting armored opponents and clashing blade to blade...unsurprisingly, a weapon with a similar structure was bound to pop up in northern China, where armored combatants were far more likely to run into each other than in the south...but I think the Koreans led the way on this one lol
I was wondering if you know how a full tang (battle ready) blade was made for the Miao Dao. Specifically if the steel of the blade was folded many times for strength.

the chines used bi-metal blades in the bronze age, long before the japanes. Japan got the idea for multi metal blades from china. the dao is the equal of the katana.
It has to do with Muscle Memory. You practice movements at a slow pace so that your mind gets better at organizing your body to do the movements you're practicing.
I'm in a German Long sword group, and we just had a demo in Miao Dao, we started to learn a 24 move kata. looks interesting. He (the teacher) said we might set up a manderan duck formation and see how it works against the long sword.
Miao Dao is a sword made a Japanese sword in China by reference.
Form of those appearances resembles a Japanese sword closely. Of course it is not structure such as the Japanese sword which put steel of plural kinds together.
It is not bad. But it is better for people to believe in a form, rather than liking it because the form or the weapon looks cool. Sorry for being a killjoy.
You are no killjoy. So true you are, but you feel people like this form because the weapon is kool looking? I understand. Well I only teach students this form beacuse they believe in the weapon and not the form. Forms are just books of movements and should not be the goals! They are needed but not to attach oneself too because of kool idea... Its wrong teachings and ideas from students that cause this problem...

Folding it multiple times does not give it strength.

苗刀的很多古老技法早就失传了,现在流行的套路都是近代人创立的。

This is sweet...my sifu says he knows a form for "long-handled broadsword", I wonder if this is the weapon he's referring to.
StylZ905 3 years ago
lots of dao and broadsword are similar but not the same. the dao is more like a spear blade. mixed with the broadsword.
Zatoichi291 2 years ago
very, very nice.
Miao Dao is such a beautiful form... it's a shame more people don't embrace it!

Thanks - So agreed. People need to find a real reason to learn an art. Not because it looks cool or because some movie star did it in some movie.
