If it were a lone dance piece it would be better but put in a film based on traditional Geisha before WWII (and changes to the Geisha world), it stands out like anachronism. It's a blend of geisha, kabuki, and modern dance. It's not a traditional geisha dance! Even the footwear is off. That type was worn by highclass courtesans which doesn't help clear up the image of geisha as prostitutes which they weren't.

I just now realized this scene is from this Japanese Kabuki dance watch?v=Q6O7KFCCEdU God that makes this so much more powerful...she is being tormented by the devils in hell after being unfairly betrayed she is sent to hell to be torn apart, than reborn and destroyed again
ahhh, brings back memories :D I really loved hating Hatsumomo in this movie, but liking her character at the same time. I started crying when she left. Because the geisha chick fight between them kept me the most interested
@starryshark i think the book is better. there is of course alot more detail and when she is older also . . she spends more time with that guy that buys her first so when he sells her she feels really let down again .
It symbolises heart ache, and loss and betrayal. If you read the book, Sayuri tells the story behind this dance. its about a woman trying to find her husband who has been acting suspiciously, she eventually does find him,she follows him and watches from behind a bush, he is consorting with another woman (Geisha) this saddens her so much so, that she runs away in the snow, eventually collapses in the snow and dies of hypothermia and heart ache.
I love this movie and this is a beautiful scene and all, but...is she supposed to look like a yuurei or is that just another inaccuracy by the director? o_O
Their mizuage has nothing to do with selling sex. Tayu and oiran (geisha looking prostitutes) also has a ceremony called mizuage and that is what we see in this movie.
In this scene Sayuri act as a prostitute, can be seen on the makeup, special shoes and the way she sways them when she walks on the stage. It's a special feature of the oiran/tayu.
I don't get the dance.
I guess I lack the background to really understand, but at least I know that it's basically theater that uses dancing^^
