I believe this poem to be a metaphor for heroin addiction. Now the cake refereed to in the title is the heroin itself Without this vital drug the narrator is lost and has to come to terms with his suicide, but writes this in order to inform those closest to him of his last wishes. The melancholy over tone adds to the depression he is having with drug withdrawals. As far as his "fingers" having pants, it is the security he feels while on the drug and the insecurity he feels after the high is over

this is actually my favorite book of all time. I checked it out from the library I know six times before I finally gave in and just bought it...the vid is cute and goes really well with "the pony problem" which is the first essay in the book. Great read!
