Herbert.. Rupert.. er.. whatever. OMIGOD this is daft and insulting. I laughed at it, but it's a palm-faced headshaking laugh--like laughing at Beavis and Butthead. :P
@OrchestrationOnline I'm not really a composer myself (except when the random creative bent strikes me--but really, that's not "composition" so much as the drawing world's 'scrap doodles') but I used to work in Internet related tech support--a job where silly questions and crazy ideas about how things work is the norm from customers and delivered in rapid succession, call after call. :) Oddly, I liked it. heheh
will show this to my class. I am a music teacher at a performing arts high school in Sydney and thins is fantastic the kids will get a kick out of it.
@MusicalTalent89 Yeah, "deaf" not "death." An audience member asked me if I was deaf (since Beethoven was deaf, so all composers must be deaf, right?). Then when I told this to an interviewer, she asked me seriously if she thought I would compose better symphonies if I were deaf. *sigh*
When one has not a love of own proffecion never will respect others and will always do foolish thinks but not mistaces as mistakes may do all but important is when you wish / dare to correct.
@NinoUrushadze1 Not sure exactly what you're trying to say - but if one really loves one's profession, and cares about the new people who are joining it, then they will show them how to put up with annoying realities and still act professional.
The questions about Beethoven literally made me guffaw. How could anyone think that a composer would want to be deaf?! Composers ... love music ... O_O
As a musician myself, this interview stings, but at least it's also funny =[]
Oh man, people like this make my BLOOD BOIL!! I am not arrogant, nor do I think highly of myself, but sometimes when I speak with people like these, I want to arrogantly express what composers do, and how much more work goes into orchestration than 'rap,' or any type of band. Not that bands' music is illegitimate, but it doesn't take nearly as much work as orchestration.
When I tell people I am going to study composition, they say "oh, that's cool." As other people have commented here, composers and musicians are ridiculously underestimated. I am sorry you had to endure these patronizing interviews, Thomas! It's a shame that your expertise skill goes right over the heads of these silly interviewers. >_<
@PertinaciousOne Thanks, man, that's a natural reaction, but just you remember to keep a cool head just like Dr. Hubert Finkelsteen here. No matter how stupid a question, be gracious and try to say as much as you can about your music.
Comment #30 - Thanks for all the positive feedback on this, and I'm glad that I gave you all a couple of laughs. Behind the sarcasm, though, is a serious message: you are going to be asked questions just as stupid as these, and you are going to have to keep your cool just like poor Dr. Finklesteen, no matter how aggravating or uninformed the interview goes. When you're on the air, never let them get under your skin. You never know who might be listening...
I'm a studying composer working on my skills but even in my small area of experience I've encountered many conversations like this/these, unless the person tells me right in the beginning of a conversation understand the basic workings of theory, the conversation almost always drifts to some ''composer'' they know. 99.9% of the time those people really mean songwriter or musician.
Oh my goodness gracious! I can't believe this is even loosely based on reality!!! =))))
That's such a shame that people actually underestimate musicians immensely. I remember, one day some lady asked me about my profession. When I said I was a musician, she said something like: "To me, musicians are just lazy people who don't want to work, that's why they choose music." I will remember that for the rest of my life...
Thanks for the video, Thomas. What gave you the idea to make it?
@KlimovK Not a surprising attitude. People have no idea how much work this is.
I got the idea because videos about xtranormal videos about professional musicians and music teachers having ridiculous conversations are viral right now, and I thought it was time to add a composer version. And also to immortalize these moments of silliness for my YouTube audience, as a public service in case you all get this kind of interview someday.
It doesn't surprise me that some interviewers would ask questions this infuriating and demonstrate such little understanding of the subject matter. You would have to have been very patient.
@AlexSmithMusic Sort of - as I've said, things are slightly altered. But yes, I've been interviewed not once but several times in which the interviewer went on and on about people they knew who were "composers" and never let me get a word in edgewise.
You know, I think have met that interviewer. Indeed, it must be my neighbor. She asked me to play my latest composition, fired up a cigarette, and fell to sleep halfway through the prelude. At the end, she awoke to say (without removing the cigarette from her lips) "You should hear my cousin play and he never had a lesson. Here, gimme that gitbox and I'll teach ya the first two chords of Take This Job and Shove It."
@biggbaddjohn It's bits and pieces from different interviews. The thing about being deaf actually came from an audience member, but the rest of the comments are from various interviews, altered slightly to protect the innocent (me).
My word... This cousin does indeed sound very professional...
