I first watched MASH a month ago. whole 11 seasons in 5 days. Henry's death has affected me the most! It was so unexpected I was shocked for whole day!
I remember when they killed Henry. The was the last episode of the series. At least the last episode that mattered. This character rocked and he deserves a better song than a country song. As does McLean Stevenson, not only one the greatest actors on MASH but also one of the best teleplay writers the show had.
When radar told the surgons...."I have a message. LT. Cournel ( radar pauses) hengry Blakes plane (pauses) was shot down over rhe seas of Japan.........it spun in............there were no survivors" That was the saddest line ever on that show. It was sad when Radar went home but THIS was the saddest moment ever on that series. it still chokes me up.
McLean Stevenson made the show those first 3 years - and his Henry was based on the movie MASH. A bumbling, stumbling loveable character - and MS took it to the next level. Henry was all about , ironically, just getting through the day, drinking to forget where he was, and getting out alive. It was PERFECT casting. When he left, Col. Potter's character, while also loveable, was sober, competent and compassionate. A complete change. (I'll Be Seein' Ya, Henry!)
I agree the first 3 seasons were the best. MASH was a great show but it stayed on too long, imo. I didn't watch too much of the show the last 2 or 3 seasons. It was same old lines and set up over and over.
@Airman241 I call it more human. Some ppl have political views & still are decent. Some believe only in somebodys ideas and forget to be decent, sadly.
I really cried when I saw the episode where Henry Blake was being being discharged from the Army. And this was before I heard about Henry's copter shot down over the Sea of Japan by enemy fire. Can you imagine Frank Burns the Commanding Officer of the 4077? The show would've been canceled within the year!
henry blake and trapper were the best. mclean, if I remember this correctly, wanted to get off the show to pursue other opportunities seeing as he was a popular character in the mash series... except his plans didn't work out.. he never should've left!
@bostonupschick That is true, and I was wondering for a while if David Caruso took a page out of mcLean's book when he left NYPD Blue at its' apex.Luckily,he lived to tell when he got hired on CSI.
@bostonupschick That is true, and I was wondering for a while if David Caruso took a page out of McLean's book when he left NYPD Blue at its' apex.Luckily,he lived to tell when he got hired on CSI.
I choked up when I saw this. My whole family is or was in the military and I remember times when I went to funerals and there would be no body because the army couldn't find it. R.I.P everybody who fought and died for our country.
McLean Stevenson had apparently been upset by the fact that his Henry Blake character got killed off because he had hoped the door would have remained open for his return, but it wasn't meant to be and McLean Stevenson never did become that solo star that he aspired to be.Instead,it was just one failed project after the other!RIP McLean
RIP Roger Bowen. You started the Role of Henry Blake onscreen. You were Great.
Mc'lean Stevenson, you ARE HENRY BLAKE ! Henry is Legendary and immortal. No one could have played Colonel Blake every week like Mc'Lean Stevenson did. he was a Klutz as a Hospital Adminstrator, but a Genius with a Heart of Gold in the Operated Room. iof we have men like this ,Our soldiers are Safe.
Harry Morgan in great new bio (Charlton Heston: An Incredible Life: revised Edition) at amazon! At Amazon where they sell Mash dvd's it says that Stevenson was very much afraid of Conrad Bain (Bain was on the vampire soap Dark Shadows and Stevenson worked with him on Hello Larry!)!
Aww, great vid! Henry was a great character - I cried so hard when he left/died :'( Specially the part where Radar salutes him and he runs back. "You behave yourself or I'll come back and kick your butt."
Greats line: "Done move, Korea! This is a stickup!" XD
Henry could be the goof but he had so many brilliant human moments. My favourite is him talking to Hawkeye after Hawkeye's friend dies on the table.
I don't know. If I had the answer, I'd be at the Mayo Clinic. Does this place look like the Mayo Clinic? Look, all I know is what they taught me at command school. There are certain rules about a war. And rule number one is young men die. And rule number two is, doctors can't change rule number one.
Colonel Henry Blake was not the career military man, unlike Colonel Sherman Potter, and that's why I liked him more because he had been more of an anomaly.
@landrykkb Yeah i agree with what you're saying. Henry was a lot more like us though I have to admit it is hard for me to pick between Potter and Blake because Harry Morgan did a brilliant job when he came by bringing something different to the role.
I saw this episode today, for the first time. although i knew what was going to happen, i sobbed like a baby as soon as Radar saluted Blake at the helecopter. I nearly collapsed when Radar announced the death.
rest in peace, Lt. Colonal Henry Blake, and McLean Stevenson. <3
Those were Gary Burghoff's actual tears because him and McLean had a wonderful charisma and rapport together! The thing was he even had the same thing with Harry Morgan too.
I loved Lt. Colonel Henry Blake. What I'll never forget about Henry was all the times he neutralized that Asshole Major Frank Burns in protecting Capt. Hawkeye Pierce. Frank got "A Little Too Big For His Britches" as a Major.
That was a good video. McClean was great in that show. It was sad to see him leave the show and now he is gone. Excuse me i have something in my eye. (sniff sniff)
@SkunksMonks In a strange twist of fate,M*A*S*H's ratings had skyrocketed because of Henry Blake's final episode and while there were several heartwrenching moments prior to that episode, this was the one that grabbed everybody's attention during M*A*S*H's formative years.
@BrookeFitting@2 year old comment, but that episode played again today, I've been sad since it. really effecting my work effort. Dammit Radar, why'd you have to tell us all? :C
@TonytheTiger85 I had no idea that had ever happened!I would have been way too young at the time that aired to appreciate it,mind you.I wonder if that footage exists here on You Tube.
I got to tell you, I knew McLean and he was a wonderful man. He played Lt.Col. Blake to a tee in my book. His seasons of M*A*S*H were quite possibly the best of the whole run. I do miss him and wish he was still here to see this. I loved it every time he referred to old Bloomington IL, where I am from as well. I worked at the Country Club he referred to in his last episode. Anyhow, I am starting to get all mushy and such so thanks Henry and God Bless.
@DonCorleone1 My condolences to you, friend. It was McLean's passing 21 years after his final M*A*S*H episode that madeHenry Blake's death all the more spookier.Although several of his acting projects after that never panned out,he did rediscover success on a more moderate scale as he had become a permanent panelist towards the end of Match Game's run in the early 80's.
"Absynnia Henry" is probably one of the saddest M*A*S*H episodes ever! Great Job! 5*! Keep up the good work. McLean Stevenson is and always be missed! R.I.P. McLean!
@Titanicfreak12 The irony is that all the cast had cried genuine tears because of McLean Stevenson's departure from the show,so you can't necessarily say that it was just great acting. As far as I know,it was unbeknownst to even the cast members that Wayne Rogers would also depart after that season during the filming.

Exactly, and that's why it was fitting to send Henry Blake's character off that way, even if it was a tragic ending.

@laughitup68 I have just looked through the wikipedia page and it says that it was his own choice to leave MASH...Pity..

I saw the "RIP McLean Stevenson" and panicked, but I checked IMDb and he died back in 1996. Poor guy.
I grew up on MASH reruns and Henry was one of the best characters ever created for television.
