  • I hope all those who see this really listen to what being said, it not just a recipe its a way of life, its how they survived. Shortly after the depression her generation went without again during WWII. Bless her!!!!

  • My father planted a large garden back in 2007, we did all we could in our small garden and it did well! It is wonderful to have pickled foods at 1/10th the price! I will never have to pay for pickled foods again! It is wonderful!

  • thought she was gonna slice her hand cutting like that O_o

  • I Love You thank you,it might be deprssion food but I think it's healthier than what most people eat now. Your a health food expert :)

  • I'm going to make this now- thanks so much Clara! :)

  • If it had onions it would be exactly how my mom used to make. Great dish, it's delicious.

  • You are such a darling !!!

  • i wish you the best and live long! :)

  • I love Clara. I love her so much that if I had a girl child - I would name her Clara!

  • What a cutie pie!

  • This is great, since it provides a perception of simple, but healthy things, (that is, moderation as long of all nutrition is ingested…

  • This lovely lady reminds me of my own grandma who died a few years ago. She used to tell me the old times stories while cooking for us.

  • i think your an absolute angel ; ))) i love peppers and eggs and my mom always made it the same way with fresh italian bread. i love your vids and i can't help but have a big smile on my face from joy when i watch and listen to you. let your next 93 years be as golden as the last. keep throwing those pearls of wisdom our way.

  • How can you tell when an egg is cooked thoroughly, for food safety?

  • In AZ, this would be called a good breakfast.

  • I just want to give her a big big hug!

  • My grandmother was named Clara!

  • Comment removed

  • I love grandma Clara. She reminds me of the women in my family that I miss so much. Cooking styles were very much the same because they came from that same era. Wonderful videos. Thank you for the memories.

  • I could watch Clara all day. She is amazing.

  • 15 people traded their sandwiches for spaghetti on bread. :P

  • When she said we gotta make the bread, I said, what!? Im subscribing!

  • Spaghetti sandwich, haha! Great video and will make sure to let the people over at SurvivalHQ know about this one!

  • Thank you Clara

  • My goodness you make me hungry. It looks so tasty.

  • I think now that u mention it, the jar would be left out until after a meal & then put in the fridge at clean up time.

I remember plenty of people cutting or 'paring' a fruit such as an apple into wedges. They would hold the apple at chest level & cut the fruit towards themselves. Never saw anyone cut themselves but it did make me wonder if it would happen that time. They would stop the knife tip w/their thumb too lol!

  • When I watch older women cut things up without a cutting board it makes me cringe...oh, I know they have years of practice, but it gives me the heebie-jeebies.

  • Growing up in the 70s we used lard/bacon/ or drippings from cooking most meats in a pan. After you cooked it you would poor off any liquid into ur lard jar. You could leave it sit out or put in fridge. That was what u used instead of butter/oil. It added great flavor to whatever u cooked too. It sounds discusting now. Unfort it is VERY artery clogging, but that is what we used back then & way b4 that on farms. You always had a supply of it too. You didnt waste anything.

  • @2Ryled I grew up like that at my grandmother's house (in the 80s and 90s), but she always refridgerated the fat. We also save the schmatz off of chicken stock. It is really tasty and it isn't any worse for you than butter...infact I think it is probably better since it has so much flavor that you use less.

  • Excellent! Thank you so much Clara! ; )

  • I have tears now as I am thinking of my grandmother who left us 25 years ago. She was so loving and loved to cook for us..

  • Just made this, it is very nice! Next time, I might add a bit of onions and bacon but it is certainly delicious without!

  • wow!!!! :O

  • "... an we'd have peppers'n ehggs ... wanna trade sanwidges ... no."

    lol. Clara's awesome.

  • its similar on what me and my family eats every afternoon for snack but we make our egg sandwich with onions then put small amount of ketchup on it to add flavor.. its really good :)

  • this lady is hilarious! she repeats the same stories, because she's old!

  • How refreshing! I love it, thanks Clara for sharing. I will be using your recipes sooner than later!

  • I wonder if it would be possible to maybe add potatoes or make a potato and egg sandwich?

  • Cutest old lady ever

  • @Kanukami EVER !! :)

  • @Kanukami hahaha that was funny. mr potato?

  • omg u sure can cook!!!

  • My dad makes something similar to this, with broccoli and salsa in it, and wraps it in flour tortillas to take to lunch. Yummy.

  • lol my dad told me once that they used to have spaghettie sandwiches when they were kids :)

  • I make a similar version that my Mother taught me only I use olive oil, garlic and a variety of hot peppers and I also took it to school on Homemade Italian bread! I just had it today for lunch, how funny! It's very good cold also! My favorite sandwich in the whole world!

  • My family was poor. I still recall that we had a lot of salt for our meal. Those days are gone now, but Clara's cooking style brings back the day.

  • My mom makes something really similar and it is amazing! I was so happy to hear there's going to be homeade bread.

  • 3:20 is my favorite part!

  • holy crap! clara used so much salt!!

  • I'm really enjoying watching your recipies and I'm

  • lovely lady...God Bless you.

  • amazing, looks so good. I would probably drain some oil before adding eggs

  • Don't get me wrong...this is good simple food...but fuck me that was one hell of a lot of salt and oil. Lol.

  • i could smell this through the computer omg thats so simple yet so amazing

  • Why is this so entertaining!!!???

  • I made this as a side dish for pan fried chicken (minus the eggs cause of my cholesterol). Absolutely delicious! Even my wife who doesn't like bell peppers loved this recipe. I also added a sliced yellow onion.Thank you very much for the recipe!!!

  • @heavym3tal Without the eggs its just friend peppers with a lil salt. What are you talking about making it as a side dish? Haha jesus man!

  • @vanharmelen for a dinner for more than 1 person

  • @vanharmelen No I mean.. it isnt much of a dish if you just frie a bunch of peppers. I love the granny btw <3. She is so sweet!

  • I am 12 and what is this.

  • @Shorigun its a nice decent meal you can make during hard times, like the great depression in the united states which was an economic(money) problem. everybody was very poor couldnt afford anything decent. u will learn about it when u get to high school. consider yourself lucky because we live in pretty good times

  • @Shorigun this is a cooking show

  • I can't stop watching her movies... She is interesting, love the stories!

  • my italian relatives back east would make this. thank you Clara.

  • Anything with peppers is good! Except for the eggs.

  • she has remarkable cutting skills with the knife. hope folks appreciate what it was like to live during this time period, which is similar to the time this vid is being posted but the depression era was much worse

  • im just wondering how she went from 91 in 2007 to 93 in 2008

  • @bleachlover124the2nd lol i'm sure you can figure it out. but in case you can't, let's say you're birthday is june 20th and you are 20 years old now. you'll turn 21 on june 20th (actually the day before your birthday you'll turn 21, but that's another lesson). next year on june 21st you'll be 22. You're 20 years old now in 2011 and in 2012 you'll be 22.

  • Oh, Clara, this was DELICIOUS-:) So many thanks.

  • watch the salt grandma! shes awesome :)

    lol

  • Wonderful to watch!!! Makes me wish I had video and youtube when my grandmother was alive.

  • @xXJennetteRoxXx kids that are ten years old say that they ARE TEN. not that they are ONLY ten. the only person that would say ONLY is someone that is much older than ten and sees that age as inferior

  • I'm glad I found this channel!

  • I have eaten all these things my Nanny (God rest her soul) made and never knew how she did it. Thank you Clara for teaching me! I love you and have never met you, but you are wonderful!

  • 12 persons wouldnt survive great depression

  • I love your series. I love it when Clara says, " I'm going to turn on the gas." It is an electric stove. Must be connected to the old saying, " Now we're cooking with gas!" It means things are going good.

  • Clara, will you adopt me?

  • Wow, Nice old westy stove you got.

  • WOW!! That looks great!! Can't wait to try it myself!

  • My Dad was born in Mobile Al. in 1921. I have had the honor to have enjoyed some of these wonderful meals. Yum, he made his eggs and peppers with onions.

    Bless you Ms.Clara!!!!

  • @xXJennetteRoxXx God bless you, child. You keep on learning and doing from Clara here. You will learn so much!

  • Not 'allowed'. Yes. Interesting so many of us confined to cities are not 'allowed' to be self-sufficient, especially now when times are starting to get lean.

    Somethings gotta give folks....~shakes head~

  • @Umbereth noticed that the yolk is orange...not yellow , that's because it's the color it's should be...that's a good egg...not a MONSANTO egg.

  • VERY good!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh my goodness she is so cute! What a treasure to have her talk about the depression and give us her recipes!

  • ahhh... food made with love!

  • When america goes to Sh!t, this is the kinda woman you want cooking for you...I love this lady, to bad she's 93...I love good spirited people like her, keep up the cooking, cause i am coming back for seconds :o)

  • She looks like a wonderful cook, but man what a combo. Looked like mush at the end. I guess they did what they had to do to eat back in those days. I would still try it tho. I think her apples and her pizza looked the best out of all the dinners I have seen her cook. WTG Ms. Clara :)

  • oh i love peppers and eggs, but we make it with nice fetta cheese and call it mish-mash

  • I love all of your recipes Ms. Clara. You're a wonderful cook.

  • ok clara you get started on that bread and i'll watch the peppers and eggs;)

  • My mom makes this for me all the time, with peppers she grows in her garden - It's the best.

  • Comment removed

  • Haha what a result

  • Love you Clara,wish i could give you a big hug,xxx

  • did she live pretty well during the depression? seems like she at least always had 3 meals a day. nothing fancy but 3 meals still. i think it would have been a lot worse for most of the american population at this time.

  • @bradyischamp from the strories I hear her tell, she was pretty good during the depression since her family had a good sized garden, they were able to grow a good amount of food. I think that mixed with a combo of great parents and common sense, they did pretty good.

  • sweet granny!

  • i had one green pepper and three eggs sitting in my fridge...among other things....and i thought while watching this video meh why not try it as a snack.....and so i went to my kitchen and whipped it up....took bout 10 mins all up and didnt know what to think it would taste like........in the end.....its not too bad......its not too bad at all......i actually like it........well done clara.

  • This si such a great dish...i love it. one of my fondest childhood comfort foods where peppers and eggs and potatoes and eggs...as a matter of fact i still cook it today using my grandmothers old cast iron frying pan.....that pan seen alot of good old time cooking...thanks clara for bringing back some good memories

  • low budget + low cal = good food for fat asses of america!! minus the bread!

  • This reminds me of my cousin. She makes scrambled eggs with pepper, tomato and onion, all chopped real tiny. She serves it with white rice. It's absolutely delicious, and cheap, and filling.

  • thx for being so sweet in sharing ur receipes, u made me feel like home whenever i watch ur videos. Long live Clara!!!! I appreciate wat u've done :)

  • she uses a lot of salt

  • dame that looks good

  • Bless you Madame!

  • Such a sweet woman!

  • Not too long ago I read an article about raising "back yard chickens", it was surprising to learn just how many larger cities still allowed them. Some allowed them for eggs only, but not for slaughtering for meat. Much of my own meal preparation is similar to Sara's "Depression cooking". Not so much that I'm low income, just so much simpler to prepare a satisfying meal that way.

  • @5lkk lol i live in Guam, and there are a lot of wild chickens just walking around sometimes and my neighbors have the chickens for the egg ^_^

  • I like how you can tell her technique is older- she cuts all fruits and vegetables with a paring knife in her hand. I find it really enriching to see someone so nice teaching people about and important part of our heritage. Clara, you're the greatest! :)

  • Quaint. I like it. thanks for the vid.

  • "BLESS YOUR HEART CLARA", KEEP ON COOKING!!!!!!!!!!

  • wtf your gonna make the bread too?
