Suprised, because he was driving good in my opinion, regulary places in the top 5 or 6 but Gilles was flying through the air and landed on the barricade, it was horrific R.I.P. Gilles and I hope tha Kubica will return in next season after his crash in the beginning of 2011.

Camera man really should have done a better job of filming. Lost a lot of evidence there. Luckily a witness was able to testify how the car hit the barrier/bank. All helps build safer cars.
Given the severity of the crash, the damage on Jochen Mass' car doesn't seem to be very bad. Jochen's wing was clipped whilst the Ferrari was destroyed in the air. It would seem the angle of the impact was all absorbed by the Ferrari. The went airborne and flipped several times, disintegrating the cockpit completely.
I wonder if today aerodynamic and the safety advancements were available in 1982, would it at least save his life in that fateful crash?

Gilles has become an icon at home and abroad, and he wasn't even at the top of his game when he died. But, he was an abrasive little man and hard to get along with. He offended easily and never forgot affronts. He was always pushing the limit. When he died, he was headed toward the pit... the lap wouldn't have counted for time anyway. But, that's the way he was and people like that sometimes don't live long lives.

I was in a fatal car crash and it happens so fast, you're only afforded one action (If you're fast) so once the car is going it's already too late, it has to be avoided and prevented, once the car is sliding it's already too late.

@DrClave No, it is just not acceptable for you to blame Mass. He moved to the right to let Villeneuve through and Villeneuve also moved to the right causing him to clip the back of the car and flip. No-one is to blame here. If you look at the clip again carefully Gilles is absolutely flying around that bend and would not have time to react properly . He should have slowed up.

Gilles has become an icon at home and abroad, and he wasn't even at the top of his game when he died. But, he was an abrasive little man and hard to get along with. He offended easily and never forgot affronts. He was always pushing the limit. When he died, he was headed toward the pit... the lap wouldn't have counted for time anyway. But, that's the way he was and people like that sometimes don't live long lives.

@mnpd007 I read that he had similar qualities to Senna. That he was quite humble and liked simple things in life. Haven't heard that he was 'abrasive and difficult to get along with'. Where did you get that from ?

@mnpd007 I've heard exactly the opposite in Gilles. That he was very humble, and modest. That he was a good friend, rather than being "an abrasive little man" [quote]. I'm not sure where your knowledge comes from, whether it's inside or just made up. The only example I can think of, that may display Gilles in a less than favourable light, was after the clash with Pironi two weeks before Zolder, but he had good reason to be annoyed.

I was in a fatal car crash and it happens so fast, you're only afforded one action (If you're fast) so once the car is going it's already too late, it has to be avoided and prevented, once the car is sliding it's already too late.

@granturismo5101 Yeah, he was knocked unconscious instantly, because he suffered a broken neck. The crash occurred just after 5pm and he was pronounced dead at Saint-Raphael Hospital, Louvain, at 9:12 pm.
