Not the cause, but ensures the continuance. They cant be 'dis invented' so are a nec evil in order to deter their use thus ensuring no Global conflict since 1945. I am not by any means ignoring the dozens of conflicts since ( all war is abhorent ) but a WW3 type conflict would be unimaginable.Thanks to these usless politicians who have degraded the UK Armed Forces so much since the 1980's that we are now in the situation that we would be unable to defend ourselves in a conventional conflict.

@cpet60 I very much doubt that trident and nuclear weapons are the cause of this being a so-called "free country" :P
