@JanineRobin Haha, that's one of my favorite parts of the episode. Thanks for pointing it out; hilarious.
P.S. I hate seeing Maggie so damn low, she's the sweetest person in the show, and yet- all she gets in return is crap. Previous season and beginning of s2, it was funny .. but now, it's just too much. She doesn't deserve it.
I think it's sort of pointless making a "US" version, but I don't think it's "selling out."
They just changed a few names, like the now-"Katie Couric" joke. It doesn't change the meaning - just ensures that everyone can get the joke straight away.
Of course the irony is that Gervais recorded an American version of this scene to make sure that it sold better to the american market, when he had orginally written it as an English scene with English celebrities mentioned, which is far more realistic. So he was prepared to change and adapt for his own benefit in the USA, a market he was at the time very keen to break into. If he was really above all of this, he would have said, "my character is English, I'm not changing things for the yanks"
how can ricky write AND direct such quality as this - this is A* 1st class PERFECTION in every aspect - especially the observation of modern society - this is simply classic and a historical interpretation of british celebs in 2000...
so how the FUCK did he FAIL so badly with those hollywood films?! invention of lying was a good concept... but boring and hugley flawed... and ghost town again great idea... but boring... reeeeally boring. this, on the other hand... is perfection...
@dannyday58218195 The films were not as bad as you suggest, and the invention of lying was based on an interesting idea. You have a point though, which is that Gervais can't fully translate the shorter, sit-com format to the big screen. Coogan and Cleese couldn't either. A two hour film is different to a 30 min comedy.
The most famous person in the room is Lionel Blair. So famous that his name is cockney rhyming slang for Flares (Flared Trousers). I doubt there is anyone at all born in the UK over the age of 30 who hasn't heard of him.

he's saying the obvious things though. people who sell themselves out will never get it or try to accept it and change anyway, so...trite. thats the kind of speech you expect in the end of cheep melodrama movies
it may be obvious but the delivery and the wording is perfect and that is the important aspect, its nothing like a "cheep melodrama movie" cheap has an a in by the way
yes how sad that us ignorant Americans don't know who the British equivalent of Ryan Seacrest is. We really should all start following the British tabloids and reality shows as well as our own. That seemed to be the main point Gervais was trying to get across in his speech at the end.
its like this: in the US they have the worlds most popular culture so they dont really have to give a shit about UK popstars etc so when UK producers make the show for them they know that so they take out all the british culture refernces... if u really believe they changed a few insignificant references here or there to patronise their US audience either you gotta be fucking stupid or your having a laugh
Gervais is right no doubt, but he profited with other people's fame in this series as well. Everybody ends up sailing with the wind instead fighting this celebrity culture.
this is a historic piece of television. Some people view it as mere entertainment. The fact of the matter is Gervais couldn't be more correct on the current state of society.
