  • 你用香港音讀個陣我笑左 因為我都係咁讀...lol

  • interesting!

i am studying in the US and the only way to really get rid of the hk accent is to speak it everyday...literally...lol

except for the tones, there are a bunch of pronunciations that hk'ers cant really pronounce...i experienced that myself...uh...i see my old self in ur videos...they bring back memories xd

  • 好似一個tvb藝員既聲呀0.0

  • you really have to improve on your handwriting...i thought "studying" was "standing" and "university" was "universe" at first glance...otherwise, very nice video

  • 嘩!睇你一個VIDEO好過我上10年ORAL堂阿!

  • 請問3同6有咩分別? "是" 同 "試"?

  • @sayhi2everyone "si3"係"嗜", si6係"事"

  • 成日讲得5得,,,你当然得啦!!! i'm ur subscriber =D

  • I am surprised that 張宇人 speaks English like that. He's a graduate of DBS, the elite secondary school in the 60's and 70's (and still is now) when he was a student there. DGS, the counter-part of DBS, couldn't have produced girls speaking English like that!

  • 聽唔懂` 最後-0-..........

    但是懂怎麼講廣東話-3- 1 6 16

  • This is a very analysis

  • Very well done ! I have never come across anyone who could explain this as well as you did. Knowing why and how they have this weird accent is a great starting point for those who truly desire to speak English more fluently with a proper accent.

  • da da dadadad daaa dada

  • Thank you so much Mr. Siu

  • @terryng9471

Agree. Mr. Siu is very generous.

I would like to add one thing that many Asians in Asia like to use rising tone - esp. at the beginning and the end of the sentence.

A picture tells a thousand words.

    用一句港式英語: 有HEART!!!

  • @fishball2711 係"有Haat"!! xD

  • I used to speak like that, but after I moved to u.s. my accent is kind of gone.

  • maybe you should demonstrate how to say it in a native speaker tone so people can hear the difference?...

  • 先生你好得啊!!

  • ... i think it's "at the University of Hong Kong"? Because I used that the other day and I was confused about in and at too and i'm pretty sure it's at lol

    Thank you!

  • 很好的教學;D

  • 需要我聽完唔識分,不過我覺得你好勁,仲勁過教我戈個english戈個ah sir,佢完全係正宗香港式英文黎,講英文死故故,都係用戈幾個音,搞到我聽佢講英文好似講梗中文咁,三隻字,「你好掂!」

  • i do like your voice!! =)

    attractive~

  • thx a lot :D

  • @MrAlan1138

    那你先回土去學一下吧

  • If you are referring to "the University of Hong Kong", it's grammatically correct since it is a proper noun.

  • nice tutorial~~~~~~~~~

  • awesome, man. I am now studying in US. This is so so much helpful than I expect. Thanks.

  • 甘澳門人呢?_?

  • isn't the same?

  • 雖然有d唔係好明, 可能因為我未到你個level, 不過都覺得你都好pro, 學左唔少野, thanks!

  • Sigh !!!! For such a tuition in this short clip, it showed that he's unable to get to the point & or teaching students to change their HK accent.

To people of higher level, they don't even need to know what he said, to people of lower level, they don't even know what he's talking. Somehow, thanks to public media today, w/o advertising promotions, Oten, "Doctor" Amanda Tann & Richard Eng are dead !!!!! Yet, also thanks to publich media, without it, we're unable to know their TRUE standard !!!

  • Interesting, really interesting. That method should be an option to learn English. Well I hope that you continue doing this. Bye bye for now.

  • so true~!!!!hahahaha

  • well done

  • Good analysis . Appreciated

  • Thanks for sharing~

  • mandarin 都拼不对

  • 789聲係入聲字.

  • good job

  • its really disgusting to have hong kong accent when speaking english

  • 第一次聽到用廣東話的六(九)聲去解釋香港人的英語「口音」,精彩!

looking forward to the next lesson.

    thank you!

  • why are you ashamed of hong kong accent and say its wut tut scottish english and all different country english must have an accent. So whats your theory of a perfect accent why not be origin and stop trying to be a foreigner i am chinese but my english accent is mine and iam proud of being myself . One thing you must agree english is from england do you think english accent is perfect evey accent is the origins of our culture just leave it and i want to ask one more question who are you ???

  • but the problem is that you can't even pronounce well english :(

  • 你把聲好正...

  • @yakastep 好好聽xd

  • I know you have good intention to help people to improve the accent. But you should be careful and respectful when criticising others, you should not say it is "wut dut". Be kind! In addition, you do not need to mention the name of the speaker in the recording tape. Your purpose is to help us to improve English speaking, and it is a good intention.

  • Yes I do think so. Don't mention the name of the speaker...

  • 咁真係核突喎大佬,議員黎架.

One way or the other they represent our gov.

  • 洗唔洗要絕對音感先分到?

  • Its amazing how you can break it down and explain the accent.

how'd you get to know all these theories?

  • 8.If you dont live in an English-speaking world or have closed English-speaking speaking friends, you can achieve accent-free English one day.

9.If you watch some youtube clips like this, you can move towards accent-free English.

10.If you disagree with me, you can achieve accent-free English.

  • 4.If you can communicate well with western people, they will have no complaint about you or laughing at you for anything.

5.If you dont have good self-esteem, accent-free English is a solution.

6.If you can speak accent-free English, all the big problems of your life will go.

7.If you can speak accent-free English, you are superior to other people who still have obvious accent.

  • 10 Myths about accent-free English!

1.If you grow up and still live in Hong Kong, you can achieve accent-free English by some simple training (Eg taking a course or learning for several hours).

2.If you learn accent-free English, you can talk like a native English speaker.

3.If you can speak English like a native English speaker does, you then have no communication problem when meeting foreigners (English speaking as mother tongue) or people of other nations.

  • 講錯了 時and是 既音 :o

  • 好好呀,我讀中,小學時自己無心機讀,出嚟做野之後好想學返,不過都唔知由邊度開始好,你可以教吓我嗎?我只會一啲好簡單既英語,連基本既見到英文字要點讀都唔知,唔知道我可以點學呢?

  • nice vid,我都系努力學英語中。

  • It is a good action to improve HK peoples' speaking of English.^^

  • 香港真是个人才汇集的地方!赞!

  • 得晒!

  • that was really useful man , i can write but i can't speak

  • It's a good idea to discuss how to improve your non-native English accent.

  • most of the HK people can write good essay

    but they cant speak good

if HK people can improve it

    it will be really nice

  • Thanks for the lesson! I find the material well prepared and useful. It would help if you can demonstrate, or show a few native speakers saying "he is studying in the University of Hong Kong" and "He is a boy".

  • dingdongmaomao06:

The interesting thing is as though you asked yourself: how do you feel if you are talking with a monk or a nun uttering spells? In fact, accented speech sometimes causes a lot of misunderstanding in particular when people speak machine-like English like Hongkonger, that you may wonder "is he angry, or happy, or hesitant, or emotional, or interested, or affectionate ... ?" it is very important!

  • I first thank for the effort that you produce and upload the videos. However, I don't think it's really a big problem to have some accent when speaking English. Nobody can free from accent if one's mother tongue is not English. If you have time of course it's good to pay effort to tune your accents. But it should not be an obstacle to speak English even you cannot be free from accent. I believe most people will be frustrating to achieve an unrealistic goal of speaking free-accent English.

  • dingdongmaomao06:

well, unlike you, I feel that it is a big problem. I don't mean that I am a good speaker. In my work, I come across native speakers at times and am quite influenced by them over my spoken English. If you had experienced the same thing as I do, you would have realized an astounding thing: "you find Hongkong people's English so difficult to understand" because you are virtually listening to a machine uttering some meaningful sound. A native speaker does not!

  • it's not a problme as long as people can understand you. however, english is a language that requires a precise pronunciation, voice and diction. If you can't master English, people will know that you don't have the talent in language. Canadian is able speak two languages. Many European speak more than 2 fluently. I guess it's ok if you don't use English everyday, just like my Manderin.

  • Which language doesn't need precise prounciation? Of course it's not good to have very heavy accent in speaking a foreign language, not just English. But it's not really necessarily to push ourselves for achieving accent-free English, it's an extreme that cannot be easily achieveable by common people, especially for those who grow up in Hong Kong. Fluency in English doesn't mean accent-free, if you really have chances to see most European speaking English.

  • You're right. But accent can be eliminated with training and practice. If you think it's ok to have accent, I don't know what else to say. I have experienced miscommunication with folks I work with in India because of their accent.

  • Great and useful!

  • Suggest you could use more speeches of MPs as examples. those english politicans are fantastic (speeches only).

  • Thank you for your sharing!!

  • precise pronunciation is more important imo.if u heard the french or italian speaking english u'll know what i mean.ppl from different city have different accent.there is no such thing as 'correct' accent...cont.

  • queen's english seem to be the standard tho but too posh for my liking.there's 1 thing i agree tho, the english of those politicians really are crap, not because of their accent but the way they string the sentences into one big uncomprehensible word-no pauses,no emphasis at the beginning or the end of words.

  • I went to a lot of job interviews in Toronto. Some of the big companies will ask me questions, and each question is a very very very long sentence, just like a sentence written by lawyers in a legal document. I guess they have a purpose to do this. I would said "pardon me ? sorry ". I know what is the result of the job interview. But not all of the job interviewers are like that. Lucky me.

  • Wonderful ! I do hope my daughters get full of it.

  • I lived in US and I am Chinese(Cantonese). My parents are from Hong Kong and they have the same accent like you said. Thanks for sharing!

  • 好慢呀...

  • This is great! thank you for sharing

  • wow thats so true!! i never realised tht!! @.@

  • ur information is very useful. i think i will benefit a lot=)

  • 你好用心喔! 教得不錯! thanks!

  • 教得蠻奇怪的.....= ="

  • you are really awesome!

  • Some people might be fine or even feel proud with their accents, but some people don't. The author is just trying to help. Some people are always trying to learn more and improve more. 學多一樣野永遠都好D... Don't be a 井底之蛙..

  • For immigrants in Toronto, we try to have less accent just because we need to look for a better job. A lot of job interviewers (not all) do not like job-seekers with Chinese accent. I am not saying this is right, but we just want to get a better job. We do as much as we can to speak better English. I think for people who live in HK, it is okay to have a Chinese accent; it won't affect their job opportunities at all (I am not sure I am not living in HK).

  • well done

  • great job man, nice analysis.

  • 事實上香港人講 english 係核突 la

    佢教我地既係比較正確讀音既 English !

u need to face the fact!

  • 其實我回應緊 rickywwkk

I DO NOT agree what rickywwkk typed.

  • it's ok if u don't care about accent

but when u do public speaking, like those politican

it shows ur professional and more respectful when u speak english the way it should be

  • that's true.

    professionalism is important.

    但亦即係專業同唔專業既問題

    唔係核突唔核突既問題啦

    好難叫全香港平民都講到專業英文架喎

  • Good video. If we learn the language before seven, we'll always carry an accent. However, washing it down will help other English users understand us better. I practise by imitating the tone of how foreigners speak Cantonese. I figure it may help me catch their tone.

  • Very well done explanation.

  • for christ sake is it really that important to get rid of the so called "hk accent"? people judge you by your contents, not your accent!!! as long as you can get the message across, then it's fine!!

  • I agree with Mikki51244. It is stupid to think that HKers can "eliminate" their HK accent. We speak Cantonese everyday, not English. Cantonese is our social language. Tell those lazy-ass gwailo to learn an Asian language. Anglos can speak English only.

Americans speak with an American accent. Australians speak with an Aussie accent. David Beckham speaks with a cockney accent. I am telling the author to stop preaching the readers this "House Negro" mentality.

  • people do judge you for certain jobs.

  • SO TRUE!!!

  • "-"'''

  • ㊣ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

  • In other words, there isn't really one "correct" way to speak English. We can speak however the hell we want, just be able to communicate.

  • Seriously, I don't think it matters if you have an accent, as long as you can communicate. I live in San Francisco and speak to people with different accents everyday. It makes sense for people from different places to speak with different accent, it's their uniqueness. We don't always have to "follow" the English sounding.

  • the best video that i've ever watched!
