  • I like how they have the white dress and everything. =] I've seen different hand fasting and they don't always go for the white dress and the tux. It was probably to keep the family comfortable, but what girl doesn't dream of getting her wedding dress? XD Woo Pagans!

  • Ok... handfastings are NOT historically pagan! Handfastings began in Europe because couples often had to wait for clergy to visit their town to get married. They developed this mutal agreement..."striking a bargin"... marriage where they clasped hands and declared their desire before a witness or witnesses. This type of marriage was recognized as legal in Scottland until 1939. Handfastings did not become "pagan" until the 60-70s....

  • @StrataPyr I'm afraid that's not entirely true, it is a tradition that has gone back far beyond Christianity, although was adopted by Christianity for the reason you said :) The rite was has been named after the Norse tradition although it was most popular in Celtic times. Ancient Greece was also known to have similar rites as well as Ancient Rome before the adoption of Christianity and so Hand fasting is a tradition that has merged (as do any traditions) with the now popular religion.

  • Cause the Church hasn't borrowed pagan practices through the centuries, right?

  • I'm a wedding officiant. non-denominational. I was recently asked to perform one of these in a wedding that is next weekend.

Can anyone explain why this ritual has become so popular right now?

  • @atomic6120 It's because everyone is starting to feel comfortable "coming out of the broom closet" so to speak

  • The Christians adopted similar traditions as a handfasting. But it origionated in Pagan cultures of Gaul. And it in fact origionated as a part of the Beltainne celebrations. But in the same way that Christians don't acknowledge their holidays came from Paganism is the same things. A handfasting was translated to a wedding. The simple fact that a handfasting denotes the woman represents the Goddess & man the God coming together for the fertility of all, sayes it all.

  • Hand fasting comes from the 'old Norse' tradition of 'striking a bargain'. It is most definately a Pagan tradition, and not allowed in many English Churches.

  • arent ribbens supposed to be used

  • Handfasting isn't just Pagan and Wiccan - it's a traditional Cetlic ceremony which doesn't necessarily have to fit into either of those brackets. But mostly it does these days. We're considering handfasting within a non-pagan, non-wiccan, non-religious ceremony.

  • what book is he reading from?

  • but...what kind of religion is this?

  • Handfasting is Pagan and Wiccan

  • you're wrong, i hate to say it like that..but you are. It's neither pagan, wiccan or christian...or anything. If it were, they wouldnt allow it in a church. Ive seen this done many times in churches. It's just a human thing, not any sort of paganism or wiccan ceremony. Yes, its popular with wiccans and pagans...but its not owned by the faith of either side.

  • @Drummingwizkid I've looked it up. It's definitely Pagan.

  • Go you

  • @Drummingwizkid why thank you

  • not to be a dick, but i guess the fact that a friar in california told me this isnt just a pagan thing didnt really matter..i guess since the pope has performed it means that all of Catholicism is just one big farce and were all going down a slope stupendous stupderdom right?....right...........

  • Well I'm glad he has no problem with handfastings. However, priests in America often say stuff, and it's often crap (like Wiccans are stealing kids, Pagans are sacrificing babies, etc.) and don't even realise that the tradition of eggs in Easter is an old Pagan thing. I'm not about to slag off Catholicism, but handfastings have been around for centuries, before Christianity even began to exist. The Pope has prob used Easter eggs too and had a Yule log (Yule:old Pagan celebration)

  • yay, you're my new best friend.

  • @Superapplefrog ,,i agree,,and im a christian...alotta christians are too biast in their views to realize this stuff...

  • @bewitchedfox Wicca is a Pagan religion the two are not separate. Paganism is an umbrella term just like Christianity is an umbrella term. There are different traditions in Paganism just like there are different denominations in Christianity. If anyone says Wicca is not a Pagan religion they are either uninformed or lieing.
