Y'all can be jealous, I had the pleasure of meeting her in person after a concert. A wonderful lady, who gave her all in a concert. She worked up a sweat! I'll always remember!
She was the greatest of all! She was a real musiian, leader, look how she conduct any of her bands. And she was singing SOLOS and IMPROVISING. Not one of those who just sing the head and the extro, and leave the trio playing most of the time!...These ones should be payed less than their trios and have their names smaller on the poster! Thank you Betty for being such a great improviser.
I love it! In the beginning, It's like she's stretching in the morning (Imagine just waking up, feeling the muscles & the energy), then they let it rip in Betty's inimitable style. Reminds me of why I love jazz (virtuoso playing/singing with excellent improvisation). Plus it's not all about the lead- what she's doing wouldnt be half as good without such strong players. Love the look she's giving Pianist -(5:05) it's like, "yeah,uh huh, I approve"
I can't ever, ever, ever, visit u tube without watching this - she doesn't just sing giant Steps in her "Betty Carter" style, I feel that this song has taken over her whole being.......weird, but I can only describe it as beautifully breathtaking - I've got to stop watching now as the goosebumps are threatening to tear my shirtsleeves. Thanks for posting......don't ever remove it !
I feel drawn into this interpretation! I had the priviledge to meet this quintessential lady of Jazz! The Bebop Queen indeed! When I saw her back in 1987-1988 she had an incredible young piano player! He was a baaaad cat! I apologize for not remembering his name. Would anybody know who I may be referring to who played with her at that time? He was a young white gentlemen who looked like he was just out of high school! I know that he leads his own band now!
Wow... The incomparable Betty Carter. She always took on very young Musicians and essentially put them through a Masters Degree in Music Theory and Improvisation. Once you were done with a series of concerts, you were ready for anything and anyone. Stafford Hunter, Giant Steps was composed by John Coltrane, not Betty. Betty Carter was an Interpreter, not a composer, an equal in terms of Genius. One more thing, Betty passed on, back in 1998, September 26th., to be exact.
She was so beautiful! Her voice sounds so peaceful yet she is just easily probing the depths of the tune in a later Trane style! Then they bust out in the changes- FC-
Wow. The genius of Betty Carter. All the drama, creativity, originality, etc.. She really was/is an example of a musician making a song your own. I listen to this and I think she wrote Giants Steps. That's the sh*t we SHOULD ALL be striving for.

By slowing it down in the intro, Giant Steps starts to sound more like Central Park West.
