i remember this me and my mates in the bookies the 1.45 at doncaster f.durr the jockey only had 50p but payed the tax . i was grinning my head off for days £ 50 for me was a lot of money then.. went straight up the town and bought a new stereo cash :) thanks for posting this video im 54 now remember it like it was yesterday
@pw7300 i dont understand what you mean by "but payed the tax"..........please clarify if you can.........reminds me of my tout to my whole school that Temperence Hill would win the 1980 Belmont Stakes.......today i'd have had 1000 on him, but back then 2 bucks was my life savings.........he was chalk at 53-1 compared to you!!!!!......peace brother...
@cgambler864 . . "but payed the tax" means he paid tax on his stake which was 50p, rather than his winnings which turned out to be £50.50p - quite a difference there as you can see. But of course today in the UK we don't pay tax any more on our winnings.
I was on Hitite glory this day Music boy was way too short to back for me so I had A £1.00 on Hitite what a night we had that night £100 was 4 weeks wages back then
I saw this race at Doncaster. Music Boy was my favourite horse at the time. Trained by Snowy Wainwright at Malton ,he had won the Gimcrack at York over 6 furlongs, but was back to 5f for this race. I always thioI saw this ught he would have stayed the Guineas trip (he was by the miler Jukebox). What an occasion it would have been if he had won at Newmarket!

I was told to back Hittite glory every time it ran weeks before by a schoolfriend who knew masses about racing . He told me it had been coughing before the Gimcrack, where it was tailed off. I had won on Music Boy in the Gimcrack and could not see it getting beaten and Hittite Glory was only 14 to 1 in the paper so I didn't back it. Typical.
my memory of this race is a little like gordgord, except i put my last fiver on music boy.i was as sick as the proverbial parrot when it got beat. frankie durr was a decent little irish jockey and johnny seagrave was nortern champion, rode for pat rohan. oh boy i cursed seagrave that day! i wish i could say it ended as happily as gordgord's day,but it never. such is racing!
I looked after Hitite Glory, I was an apprentice jockey with Scobbie Breasley at the time. I was 18 years old, now 52, and had my last five quid on it. I gave my sister the wire for my brother in law but she did not pass it on. He still speaks about it to this day. I wonder if anyone else has the full video as this is the first time I have seen it as I was there at the time.
Brilliant posting although I didnt back the winner was way to young the second Music Boy was one of my all time favourites great to see footage of him after all these years. If anyone out there has any of Royal Boy also a smart 2yo of 1975 id love to see it.
... count me in. I remember watching this race with some of my mates wishing we'd stuck 50p to win on it. Nowadays, you could stick a donkey off Blackpool beach in a 5-horse race and the tight-fisted bookies probably wouldn't give you 50/1.
I had a fiver on this one, 500 quid to the good. A shed load of money in those days.

You're right the prices aint as big these days take the grand national for example you don't get 500-1 shots anymore!
bates1972 3 years ago
Mainly because the National has improved in quality and absolute no-hopers are now weeded out.

"i wonder if anyone remembers this horse winning?"
