Callas fans need to wake up and realize how ignorant they are. If someone doesn't sound like Maria that doesn't mean they aren't good! Vissi Darte sung by Maria was never as good as Angelas. Callas was great but she didn't do everything the BEST! Maria would have loved to hear such a massive and legendary talent as Angelas!

I believe the issue is the conductor. She is trying to get him to move and he is not responding to her tempo needs. Puccini has a lot of rubato, this is not being addressed. There are many temp changes in this aria that move the music forward, this also helps the singer not die.
That's more like it, my dear. She gives it everything and adds some schmaltz! What is lovely is that her placement is so secure that she doesn't ever oversing, yet the impact on top is quite powerful. Overall I would say this is the best I've heard of her voice.

Gheorghiu, I went then to listen to the 1954 EMI studio recording of Callas and this one simply disintegrates by the 6th note of the aria's score. Gheorghiu's middle voice is puny by comparison and without any character whatsoever. The desperate chords of "Io la deserta donna, oh non voglio morir" etc. are completely lost on our little opera student here. It is a puny and impersonal voice, when all is said and done!

Sehr gut gesungen. Die Empfindung ist sehr stark. Der Vokalausgleich könnte noch etwas besser sein. Besonders die A-Vokale in tieferer Lage klingen zu flach, weil zu vollstimmig. Die Verbindung mit der Nasenrachenraumresonanz hält sich nur, wenn auch in tieferer Lage die Randstimmfunktion nicht verloren geht und der Nasenrachenraum geöffnet bleibt.

Besides the obvious genuis of Puccini, Angela captures the pianisssimo, the delicate phrasing, the intense drama but withholding... it's still introvert and very very believable... She enhances the music and desperation of a character which predicament can seem un-beievable. But the emotion is distilled in a way that is... welll. I'm outta words as well

Yes, I agree with you she's pretty, but again it's a matter of personal taste (I like natural blond girls). Apart from personal taste, professionally speaking, her voice is very limited... Yes, she's popular but Mick Jagger is popular too but has no voice at all... So, let's not mix up popularity with good voice.

For me, Gheorghiu and Devia are the most impressive singers alive today. Gheorghiu is not only impressive in her technique & expressiveness, but in the fact that she is a solid musician, fluent in 6 languages, & generous with her time & commitment to her fans, no matter how late after a performance. Sir George Solti stopped a rehearsal bc she brought him to tears during Traviata, & said shes one of his all-time favorite soprani. She's the real deal, and there's no denying that.

I agree. Singers are just not as good anymore. I would rather a singer portray the song with his or her voice and it be stunning, than portray it with their bodies and the singing not be half as good as it could be.

She has a very inflated opinion of her talent. She's good, but not THAT good, and, at 42, her top notes are getting shrill. She also came perilously close to being kicked out of the Met permanently for her diva antics. If you act like that, you have to be a spectacular singer to get away with it, and she's just average.
If you like her voice, fine. I think she's okay, but I wouldn't pay Met prices to hear her. As far as her antics are concerned, they've been reported and written about for years. I mean Kathleen Battle-type antics: tantrums, ultimatums, hissy fits, resulting at the Met in her (and her old man's) removal from one project. And not just at the Met. Chicago got rid of her altogether. I saw an interview on TV where she implies she's the only soprano who really understands how to sing Tosca.
It's funny that people are so obsessed with her "antics." I've heard from people who've worked with her that much of what is reported is exaggerated. Chicago also fired Pavarotti, And why send out press releases about it unless it's for publicity. Elisha Moshinsky said that he hates when people say she's difficult, because she just knows what she wants. Volpe was a bigot and a misogynist who engaged in needless power struggles. Kathy Battle was crazy, but he didn't have to bash her in his book.

She brings me to tear, so much color and passion in her singing. She reminds me of Calas, but with a prettier voice . . . wow!

Sehr gut gesungen. Die Empfindung ist sehr stark. Der Vokalausgleich könnte noch etwas besser sein. Besonders die A-Vokale in tieferer Lage klingen zu flach, weil zu vollstimmig. Die Verbindung mit der Nasenrachenraumresonanz hält sich nur, wenn auch in tieferer Lage die Randstimmfunktion nicht verloren geht und der Nasenrachenraum geöffnet bleibt.

Besides the obvious genuis of Puccini, Angela captures the pianisssimo, the delicate phrasing, the intense drama but withholding... it's still introvert and very very believable... She enhances the music and desperation of a character which predicament can seem un-beievable. But the emotion is distilled in a way that is... welll. I'm outta words as well
Tomorrow I will have the priviledge of seeing Angela Live in Tivoli CPH. What a lucky person I am!

Yes, I agree with you she's pretty, but again it's a matter of personal taste (I like natural blond girls). Apart from personal taste, professionally speaking, her voice is very limited... Yes, she's popular but Mick Jagger is popular too but has no voice at all... So, let's not mix up popularity with good voice.
Listen to Renata Scotto' version of this aria and you'll see the difference (day and night). I am not Scotto's fun but she's considered to be a Godesse of "Sola, perduta, abbandonata"

For me, Gheorghiu and Devia are the most impressive singers alive today. Gheorghiu is not only impressive in her technique & expressiveness, but in the fact that she is a solid musician, fluent in 6 languages, & generous with her time & commitment to her fans, no matter how late after a performance. Sir George Solti stopped a rehearsal bc she brought him to tears during Traviata, & said shes one of his all-time favorite soprani. She's the real deal, and there's no denying that.

I thought Gheorgiu was the worst singer ever when she couldn't catch the intonation ( without the help of the lso )for "Tacea la notte placida" in abbey road studios while recording "Il Trovatore" but than along came Netrebko..... even though has got purer voice than Gheorgiu it does nothing for my goose bumps !!!Good singers are like T-Rex's :)))Complimenti to a few but my God are they rare.... and lousy ones are so well paid hoho even when wanna be a singer like K.Jenkins :)))))Oh mio Dio !!!

Personally, for that song I prefer Freni's or Scotto's performances, but this was quite good too. Puccini touches my soul with songs like that

I agree. Singers are just not as good anymore. I would rather a singer portray the song with his or her voice and it be stunning, than portray it with their bodies and the singing not be half as good as it could be.

She has a very inflated opinion of her talent. She's good, but not THAT good, and, at 42, her top notes are getting shrill. She also came perilously close to being kicked out of the Met permanently for her diva antics. If you act like that, you have to be a spectacular singer to get away with it, and she's just average.

If you like her voice, fine. I think she's okay, but I wouldn't pay Met prices to hear her. As far as her antics are concerned, they've been reported and written about for years. I mean Kathleen Battle-type antics: tantrums, ultimatums, hissy fits, resulting at the Met in her (and her old man's) removal from one project. And not just at the Met. Chicago got rid of her altogether. I saw an interview on TV where she implies she's the only soprano who really understands how to sing Tosca.

Chicago also fired Pavarotti, And why send out press releases about it unless it's for publicity. Ben je n'ai pas spécialement envie de dire en quoi untel est mieu qu'untel. Une prestation artistique n'est pas forcément une compétition. Chacune a son talent, sa grace, et on préférera l'une ou l'autre, sans détruire celle qu'on aime le moins.
Les deux font une belle carrière et c'est tant mieux pour le public.
Maintenant AG est souvent très critiquée, mais je persiste à dire que faire ce qu'elle fait c'est déjà très beau.
