  • Was looking for the Trumpet version because I heard this in Newtownards, County Down in 1987 when I took my son to a circus. Two clowns came out from either side and it was the most moving sound I had ever heard. Your video is a beautiful tribute for your son Steven. Thank you so much for posting.

  • love this, but have u heard the Everly brother's version? Well worth a listen

  • One of my all time favourites - Thanks for posting this. Miss my papa !!!

  • I was in the documentary film business. I remember recording this on a semi professional tape recorder and adding a little echo to it. Fabulous.

    Jerry

  • Time does march and age does ravage the body but the heart and soul are never changed. Though my father has passes away I always see him as a young, strong man who loved me and never once made me feel unloved...Love you papa

  • Hienosti puhallettu

  • hIENOSTI PUHALLETTU

  • This is a great piece of video and what a great song and performance by EC. My dad died two days ago and we will play this tune at his funeral in about a week's time

  • We played this at our Dad's funeral on 21st Feb 2011. Dad you meant the world to us as did you Mum, who died too young. Your children, Audrey, Carol, Peter and Jennifer - we love you both dearly and you will always be in our thoughts and in our hearts - forever. You gave us everything. And now you are together again.

  • I have this on a 78 still sounds great on my gramaphone

  • Remember this when it first came out in the fifties.I was only a lad in short pants, but knew this was gold from the first time I heard it.I have goose bumps listening to it now. Thanks for the post.

  • ..My Nan asked me to try to get her this Record about 30-years ago...i tried everywhere with no Luck...then she died in 1987..When i think of it...her Father was missing for 4-years when he was a prisoner of war in the Far East..so the Record must of meant something to her...as she was a child when he was taken Prisoner...

  • My very first 78 record

  • Magic stuff..I loved it. SO DID THE NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOURS. ( smile)

  • :))))

  • Lovely to watch and listen to - Especially reminded me of my Dad when I saw the motor bike pic - my Dad was a Champion T.T. Road-Racer and Grass-Track Racer and loved his motor bikes - it was so lovely to share your family photos.

    Best Wishes, Roxy Dazzler.

  • reminds me of my papa and his 78s..... have preserved that collection........

  • This song of course occupies a very special part in my heart.......will remain there.........forever........."Oh my Papa...to me he's wonderful.........". For all good fathers.....especially to my 88-year old Papa.

  • god bless you and your family

  • Agree with all of the above comments...have busked this myself....R.I.P Eddie.......

  • My father loved this tune. Sadly he passed away in 2002 now all I've got are the memories. Eddie Calvert was known as the man with the golden trumpet.

  • Eddy, Mary and John Gibson were my friends during their long stay in Johannesburg.

They played 6 nights per week (saturdays also matinee) and came to our place on Sunday afternoon for a braai (barbecue) but always took their instruments with them.

My wife (grand piano) and I (saxophone/clarinet) joined them and so we still have that wonderful memory of Eddy.

When Eddy left for Australia, where he passed away, he had already liverproblems (alcohol).

  • Very very lovely....thanks for this wonderful music........dedicated to all good fathers.

  • 10/10

    Thanks

  • Fantasic music !! the best ever <<<

  • Thank you for the vid & pics...I love Eddies playing & will always be a big part of my youth memories listening to his music..

It is a really nice memory to leave people with...thank you...Regards Jake

  • You know when you just get That feeling, I call it a tingle and your video did that so I just had to pop by and give a fellow Brit a few Pentagrams /stars but it would only let me give you five so here is 100 from sunny B.ham lol hope I find you well and happy. God bless and pass the Coal my best AE

  • Hi american peoples and others one!

Just take a look on this french version...

    On Youtube:

    " Yvann - Oh mon papa "

    the only true one

this song was singed at first by Tino Rossi...!

cette chanson fut chanter en 1er par Tino Rossi un chanteur francais !

    kiss

  • You're only partly right. In fact, there was a french version with Tino Rossi, adapted by J. Boyer. However, the original is by the Swiss composer Paul Burkhard written for the musical "Der schwarze Hecht" (1939). Thus the german title. Check it out e.g. on wikipedia, Paul Burkhard or Oh mein Papa.

  • Merci de nous faire écouter cette chanson francaise qui date de 1952 !

    Cette chanson n'est pas américaine...désolé !

et merci aux "The Everly Brothers " de la reprendre en anglais....mais rien ne vaut la vraie version francaise !!!

This song is a french creation in 1952 by J. Boyer

    Thanks a lot.

  • c exatement ce que je chercher, ouf! je rêve avec cette musique, g t pas grande

  • Hello, anyone has the sheet music of this song for trumpet??? It's great!

  • Easy to busk!

  • The black and white pic of you on the racing bike reminded me of my lovely dad, got pictures of him when he was a racing enthusiast in his early twenties looking just like that! Made me miss him more than usual.

  • very nicely done

  • when i was a child, an old man used to go around the streets . he had a trumpet, and would play requests. every time he came to our street, my grandma would send me to him to ask him to play this. i loved it then , and love it now. thank you. x

  • Does anyone remember a record where Eddie Calvert (I think it was him) tries to play the trumpet while someone tries to put him off by sucking a lemon? Title, please if you do, and whre I can hea a recordng. Thanks

  • I was doing National Service in the 1950's when this was all the rage. Many thanks for the chance to hear it again. Best wishes.

  • That is a terrific video, and a favourite record of mine

  • @DADRENO So did I at Dewsbury empire.

  • I don't think that there will be many folk at my funeral. I don't mind about that at all, just so long as this recording is here.

grüess us de schwiiz! Greez from Switzerland

  • Wonderful memories of earlier years. Super song! Greetings from Switzerland!

  • Is that you in the pictures? You look just like Anthony Hopkins.

And of course, you have excellent taste in music.

    Be well!

    Menachem

  • A lot of people say that - I can't see it myself.

  • I think its the eyes and the beard. Theres certainly no shame in looking like one of the greatest actors ever!

    Once again, be well,

    Menachem

  • We still do Eddie's version of "Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White". Apparently he ended up just as a gigging muzo in Australia, which is sad. One of my colleagues just happened to notice him working in a pit band.

  • Now that is trumpet playing. I tried to play like that many years ago but failed miserably. I think he was brilliant.

  • Absolutely brilliant, thanks a lot for this.

  • That is a terrific video, and a favourite record of mine too. Well done,as usual Mr Colyerfan, I mean Dadreno.

  • my father liked this best not to play it

  • Helllllloooooooo. Doesn't anyone out there have Eddie Calvert's rendition of "Il Silencio"? If so, please post it.

  • Go to The IDF Band Alumni Ensemble - El Silencio

  • Eddie Calvert always the best!

  • parrate italiano

  • Parliamo Italiano!

  • I had nearly the same experience. This song was a favourite of my father and he used to play the 78T-disc in the 50's and 60's until the old pick-up broke. Thanks to youtube I recently found it back, just in time as he is now 85...

  • My Dad used to sing and whistle that song when I was a little boy, it has been 17 today that he passed away. Thanks to U-tube last week, after 45 years looking for that song I found it back last week...

God bless my Dad now and for ever!

  • Nice to see you, Alex
